Vuk i propisiThe wolf and legislationIz IUCN-ove Deklaracije o naèelima zaštite vukova prenosimopostavku koja se odnosi na vuka, ali vrijedi i za sve druge vrste:“Vukovi, kao i sve druge divlje život<strong>in</strong>je, imaju pravo na postojanjeu slobodi. To pravo nije ni na koji naè<strong>in</strong> povezano s nekomnjihovom poznatom vrijednošæu za ljudsku vrstu. Naprotiv, ono proizlazi iz pravasvih živih biæa na suživot s èovjekom jer tvore dio prirodnih ekosustava”.Sve zemlje èlanice Vijeæa Europe potpisnice su Bernske konvencije kojapodrazumijeva zaštiæeni status svih velikih zvijeri. Vuk je uvršten u popis zaštiæenihvrsta Direktive o staništima, što sve zemlje èlanice Europske unije obvezuje nazaštitu ove vrste i njenih staništa. Zemlje kandidati za pristup EU moraju takoðerzadovoljiti i taj uvjet.U Hrvatskoj je vuk od 1995. zaštiæen temeljem Zakona o zaštiti prirode.We are quot<strong>in</strong>g a tenet from the IUCN Manifesto on Wolf Conservation that applies to the wolf,but is also valid for all other species: “ <strong>Wolves</strong>, like all other wildlife, have a right to exist <strong>in</strong> a wildstate. This right is <strong>in</strong> no way related to their known value to mank<strong>in</strong>d. Instead, it derives from theright of all liv<strong>in</strong>g creatures to co-exist with man as a part of natural ecosystems “ All membercountries of the Council of Europe are parties to the Bern Convention, which provides for theprotected status of all great carnivores.The wolf has also been <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the list of protectedspecies conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the EC Habitat Directive, which makes the protection of this species andits habitats obligatory to all EU member countries. Candidate countries for the accession to theEU must also meet this requirement.In <strong>Croatia</strong> wolves have been protected under the Nature Protection Act s<strong>in</strong>ce 1995.
