<strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> Team Participation Agreement<br />

It is critical that teams competing in <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> competitions understand and abide by the<br />

<strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> model ru l e s , p h i l o s o p hy and intent. To ensure that <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> <strong>Unified</strong> Sport s<br />

c o n t i nues to grow and that Programs and spectat o rs see the correct pre s e n t ation of <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> competitions, t h e<br />

fo l l owing must be adhered to, u n d e rstood and implemented by teams sending athletes and part n e rs to part i c i p ate in<br />

U n i fied <strong>Sports</strong> competitions.<br />

1) <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> team ro s t e rs shall be comprised of a pro p o rt i o n ate number of teammates with intellectual<br />

d i s abilities (athletes) and teammates without intellectual disabilities (part n e rs ) .<br />

2) Coaches of <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> teams may not part i c i p ate as a partner during the competition.<br />

3) In consideration of safety and dominant play, no player shall be selected for a team who has an ability level that<br />

is signifi c a n t ly higher or lower than other playe rs on the team.<br />

4) The composition of a <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> team shall not include playe rs wh o , because of an ability level<br />

d i s p ro p o rt i o n ate to that of their teammat e s , a re able to:<br />

a) dominate play ;<br />

b) ex clude other teammates from contri buting to the success of the team; or<br />

c) present a health and safety risk on the field of play.<br />

5) The intent of <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> is to give <strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> athletes an opportunity to play side by side at the same<br />

skill level with their teammates without intellectual disab i l i t i e s .<br />

I have read the ab ove memorandum and pledge that our <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> team is orga n i zed in accordance with the<br />

<strong>Special</strong> <strong>Olympics</strong> <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> program model. I understand the ru l e s , p h i l o s o p hy and intent of this program and<br />

agree to abide by these guiding policies and principles. Fa i l u re to abide by the guiding policies and principles will<br />

result in disqualifi c at i o n .<br />
