Page 2 Real Estate Magazine January 21, 2011WRITER ON PAINTERStory by Adrienne RossBob RossOne of the many pleasures of living in Mendocino County is thatit has long been an alluring magnet and nurturing environmentfor artists of every kind. Living here is not like living in most othersmall towns or rural places. We are in a cauldron of cultural creativityand artistic excellence and experimentation that’s pretty muchtaken for granted because it is endemic. There is a rich mentoringrelationship, too, between artists, young and old, master andfledgling. Even genres of art get in on this conversation, bolsteringthe links between painting and fiber arts and sculpture and ceramics, music and dance, drama and poetry, writing and printing andprose. Using the allegory of this swirling creative container, I askedtwo much-admired, very old friends to contribute to thisissue: multi-talented artist, Bob Ross, to write about TheMendocino Art Center, where he has participated invarious capacities for over forty years, and his sister, authorAdrienne Ross, to write about her brother Bob. After all,who could talk about another person more authoritativelythan a sibling? Adrienne’s new book of spellbinding shortstories, In the Eyes, In the Mouth (the cover designed byBob Ross – again with the swirling interconnectedness)can be found in local bookstores and on Amazon.com,and you really should go buy it. Real Estate Magazine January 21, 2011 Page 3Bob Ross is a local artist who is well-known on theNorth Coast for his gorgeous art work and also for his widecircle of friends and colleagues. He is also my brother. I’veknown him for all his nearly seventy-two years (I’m six yearshis senior), and I’ve seen his evolution, from a kid who likedto draw to a fully mature artist who is confident enough towork close to the edge. When I asked Bob how he got started as an artist, hereminded me that as a kid he’d wanted to be a cartoonist. Iremember that when I left home for college, Bob and I wrotehard-copy letters to each other (this was several centuriesago), and his were always filled with charming and wittydrawings.Bob got formal training from art classes at Reed, the ArtStudents League, Cooper Union and Yale Summer School ofMusic and Art. It’s no surprise that his work is eclectic, and thathe works with a variety of mediums, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, collage, and drawing in many mediums, andgraphics, and freehand papercuts. Some of his work is nonrepresentational, but much of it is based on a long, steadypractice of drawing what he sees.He says, “I’d venture that my collages stretch the furthestfrom the classical styles of drawing, and are arguably my mostadvanced work.” Most of his collages are lush, richly textured, witty and endlessly intriguing studies in color and rhythm, rather than telling a story or making a symbolic point.Preparing for this story, Bob told me an anecdote I’dnever heard before. “Probably my main boost was takinga calligraphy class from Lloyd Reynolds. He recognized meas an artist long before I recognized myself. He encouragedme to quit Reed and try to apprentice myself to Ben Shahn orAntonio Frasconi or Rico Lebrun. At the time I thought: ‘I don’tknow anything about art. I’d be embarrassed to approachthese guys. I better go to art school and learn something first.’So I moved to NYC and started going to the Art StudentsLeague. When I went to the front desk to sign up, I got handeda catalog, and the only name I recognized even distantlywas George Grosz. I said, ‘I want to study with George Grosz.’The clerk looked at me and said, ‘I’m sorry, he died this pastsummer. Why don’t you take a class with his colleague andfriend Marshall Glasier?’ So I did. Marshall had soul and classand taught me to love drawing.”VIBRATO AT THE GROTTO 86 x 66 / Oil / 1983 Featuring Eric Dolphy, tenor sax; Bobby Hutcherson, vibes;Richard Davis, bass; Roy Haynes, drumsLSD POSTER 26 x 32 3/8 / Woodblock print / Third Edition 2009 In 1964 the Doctors Timothy Leary and Richard Alpertcommissioned Ross to do a poster for their first major public presentation on the subject of LSD, at New York’s Town Hall. He executed alarge scale woodblock print, in a small signed and numbered edition. In 1992 a Second Edition was printed from the original blocks; andin 2009 he printed a limited Third Edition commissioned by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). A limitednumber are still available for sale and this and other works may be viewed by appointment or at RobertRossStudio.comFrom countless conversations with Bob over the years,I’ve learned that he is interested in depth, subtext, technicalresonance — issues he and I have in common. Writers andpainters, and certainly other artists, have many of the sameconcerns. The richness or density of our work is not what wehave in mind while we are “in the zone,” but it’s what we areproud of when we are finished.Point of View is a basic literary technique. The narrator cantell the story from his own point of view, which obviates anyother character’s perceptions or experiences unless told tothe narrator; or from one or more characters’ point of view.In Bob’s paintings, one of the first things we notice is thepoint of view. What’s up close, what’s far away, how is thepicture “cropped” or chosen within the frame. Always Bob’schoices are fresh, inviting, seductive. His nudes, particularly, are invested with relationship among the painter, the subject, the context, and light, which lends them both radiance andintimacy. These paintings don’t tell a story about “Solitude,”or “Reverie,” or “Ideal Beauty.” They tell the story of “A Modelin a Painter’s Studio.”Bob is also fiercely critical and analytical about his work, although I think he would be the first to say it comes fromhis gut and heart: “Art seems to be one of the basic humancapacities, a sort of acknowledgement that ‘the brain-boneconnected to the heart-bone.’ Plus, among such other basic

It’s work I cando for the rest of my life, and keep learning. And I get cluesabout general living from my studio work. Like, clues to flexibility,to letting go, to patience, to opening my mind beyond myexpectations....”Bob has been associated with the Mendocino Art Center forover four decades, and teaches occasional classes there. He’shad two major exhibits there, and coordinates the MendocinoFigure Drawing Collective. He told me about his early goodfortune at the Art Center: “There was still a limited arts communitythen. The Art Center was six years old, and its founder Bill Zachawas so kind to me, renting me a little utility room in the back —my first studio!”Jackie Davidson, a local master ceramicist, remembers this:“Although clay is my medium, I have an enduring interest in lifedrawing. Shortly after I moved to Mendocino in late ‘89 severalof us began to meet weekly at the Art Center and pitch in to hirea model. Bob Ross, of course, was a regular of the group which, under the leadership of Bill Martin and Bob, became a vibrantand enduring feature of the Art Center.”While it is doubtless true that Bob has evolved and ripenedgreatly as an artist in the last decades, it is also true that his workalways seemed amazing to me. I was always surprised at his outsidethe-envelopemoves, his papercuts, which seem to me like magic, his huge painting “God Presents,” his graphic art which, from thehistoric LSD poster (that Tim Leary and Richard Alpert commissionedin 1964) on, has always, in my eyes, been way beyond mereannouncement.Zida Borcich, a master letterpress printer and good friend of bothof us, makes this same point:“I got to know Bob when he was the project manager and I wasthe lowly letterpress printer at Al Moise’s shop and we printed MexGlimpse together, a book of poems by Paul Tulley, with drawingsby Roberto Chavez. It was supposed to take two weeks but insteadit took three months. I got to be with Bob all those days and daysand weeks, scrutinizing the minutest details, putting make-ready onthe tympan in little bits of tape and toilet paper and endless pullsand a sort of path to perfection I had not experienced before. Ilearned that, when it comes to his work, he has not got the word“compromise” in his vocabulary. No such thing as “good enough,”no matter what the personal cost of time or energy. He will not quit, not until it is perfect. It took him two or three full days just to mix oneof the inks for the dust cover. I mean, it was tremendous. And justlistening to him, his rap, his rhythm, his scope, erudition, I tell you, thatwas one of the great experiences of my life. I love that Bob. I have aton of his work: oils and watercolors, freehand papercuts, drawings, collages. I can’t believe what a great artist he is and that I get toown some of his work.”I would echo Zida, as I’m sure would a lot of folks on the Coast, and say, “Me too.”NEAR LEFT: LI’L REFRACTO8 x 11 1/2 / Collage / 2010BELOW: SELF PORTRAIT18 x 24 / Acrylic / 2007

Real Estate Magazine January 21, 2011 Page 5Story by Bob RossWhat ifthere hadnever been amendocinoartcenter? What if there never had been a Mendocino Art Center?Well, for one thing, I would never have come up this wayin the summer of 1965 to visit a friend who was teachingpottery at the six year old MAC. I would have gone to NYCto “become an artist.” I wonder how many other local artistsand craftspeople might have settled elsewhere? There was a small artists’ enclave here on the coast before MAC.This group in and of itself did not exert an attraction as the Art Center did.The Art Center truly opened the doors. It’s my view that what happens inmany isolated or unrecognized areas is that artists move in first becauseof the low rent. They are followed by creative and entrepreneurial folks ofevery stripe, at which point money begins to flow and create an energyof its own.If there never had been an Art Center, it seems just about certainthat there still would have been an influx of people to this area during thesixties and seventies, because the coast is just so flat-out beautiful. Themigration back to the land and to unspoiled rural areas was a huge socialmovement, more powerful than any local institution. But there wouldhave been no central focus here, noactual working location where a varietyof arts and crafts could be taught, learned and practiced, and wherepeople from many backgroundscould socialize and cross-pollinate.In 1957 the Preston Mansion in Mendocino(featured in East of Eden withJames Dean) was destroyed by fire.Bill and Jenny Zacha bought the property, and by 1959 had established theArt Center. It was their hope that boththe Center and the community atlarge would be receptive to nationaland international influences. DuringBill’s tenure as Director, the Art Center did something new, it brought visitorsand new residents who established a fresh and more open culture. In 1964 Bill travelled to Japan, where he became friends with woodblockartist Toshi Yoshida. In 1971 Toshi was teaching at the Art Center; andin 1980, influenced by Zacha and Yoshida, Mendocino became Sister-Citywith Miasa, Japan, resulting in an annual cultural exchange between theABOVE: Bill Zacha showing future Art Center grounds to Bud Pisarek, editor of West Art.Photo Credit: Nog Johnson BELOW: The Denslow-Morgan-Preston Mansion on Little LakeStreet, before it burned in 1956. Page 6 Real Estate Magazine January 21, 2011two. And the Art Center as an institution has attracted and served scores ofthousands of local, out-of-town and international visitors, including instructors, students, residents, and curious, intrigued travelers. MAC presented acontinuous stream of gallery exhibits spotlighting local and internationallyknown artists; and regularly produced festivals such as the Summer Arts &Crafts Fair and the Thanksgiving Fair, creating a celebratory community hubwith music and dancing, and the appreciation and buying and selling of art.Without the Art Center, it would have been extremely difficult toestablish a textile arts endeavor of the scope and durability of Lolli Jacobsen’sprogram. While teaching at MAC, Miriam Rice initiated her yearslongpioneering work on mushroom dyes. The grace and tough practiceof Jack Sears’ longtime pottery instruction would not have existed up hereor inspired another couple of generations of high-grade locally-crafted ceramics.Where would Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham have beenable to teach photography in this neighborhood, if not the Art Center? BillMartin’s guidance and coordination of the Mendocino Figure Drawing Collectivewould have had no readymade facility to accommodate this traditionalart. As early as 1973, MAC offered classes in authentic French provincialcookery taught by Debra Dawson and Jacques Peré; and in 1975the Zachas provided Art Center lodging to newcomer Margaret Fox, whostarted out by selling Congo Bars at Art Center movies, and whose localcuisine has had international influence. Powerful classic and contemporaryplays were performed in what was then the Art Center’s main gallery, and subsequently the Helen Schoeni Theatre was built; where else would aMendocino Theatre Company have found its headquarters? The Art Centerwas a place for people.Aldine Gorman, Betty Thompson, Esther Tregoning, May 1960, preparing for opening ofclasses. Photo Credit: Unknown_________________________________________________________________________Would there have been such seminal publications as the MendocinoIllustrated Paper (we used to call it “The Pape”), Big River News, MendocinoReview, or the highly successful A&E magazine of the Art Center itself? Thesepublications featured local artists and writers, local business enterprises, ecology or planning issues, snappy articles that interested a wide variety ofreaders, and were supported by local advertising. They were all circulatedwell beyond the north coast, some stretching clear across the United States, and they all drew resources to the area.I think what we’re looking at is several local towns which wouldn’thave had the same spread of reputation and proliferation of galleries andother businesses that were so much a part of the growing activity on thenorth coast. It seems inevitable that fine lodging and dining services andfestivals eventually would have developed, but it’s uncertain that theywould have received as much benefit from the particularly rich “art colony”character they currently enjoy. How many artists would have come up here basically for‘woodshedding’ (a jazz musician’s term for disciplined, solitary practice) theway I did, actually learning the art before looking to teach or having formalgallery or performance presentations? What kind of community supportand central social space would have been available to the many fromscratchcabin builders, who so substantially generated and influencedlocal architectural style? How many world-renowned musicians wouldhave come here to work? How much local commerce would have beengenerated by people from all over the world who come to take classesand stay for awhile ― or forever ― if there were no large, well-known ArtCenter to beckon and incubate them? When I first moved up in 1965, Bill Zacha offered me a tiny utilityroom at the Art Center as a working studio. It was twenty dollars per month. It allowed me to start my “woodshedding” and develop the ideas and skillsI was exposed to in art school, independent of the trendy politics of the ArtWorld. It also allowed me to become established in the community, andmeet the painters, dyers, printmakers, poets, mushroom enthusiasts, actors, ceramists, weavers, jewelers, musicians and singers, carvers, furniture designers, writers, and local business owners who gathered around the ArtCenter. It was definitely a place to hang out.In 1986 I taught my first of a series of classes at the Art Center. MAChas provided me with two major solo exhibits, and I’ve participated withhundreds of other local artists in MAC’s frequent group shows. They’vehosted our figure drawing group for twenty years, and given us seven BiennialExhibits. In my many decades here I’ve witnessed the continuousand sometimes unexpected ways that the Art Center has served thelarger community, myself included. In retrospect, I’m awed at how manypeople accomplished so much at this facility, which so many of us havelargely taken for granted. And at this point it baffles me to try to imaginewhat this area ― or my life as an artist ― would have been, if there neverhad been a Mendocino Art Center.(Continued on page 17)LEFT: First Art Fair, 1959 Bill Zacha with hammer, Jennie Zacha with shovel.Photo: Paul Bunyan News, Photographs by Carl JohnsonRIGHT: 1960 Back office & apartment 4. Photo Credit: UnknownMac’s CONTRIBUTIONS to our communityIn addition to the numerous social and cultural benefits, a considerable amount ofmoney flows into the community from the Mendocino Art Center’s abundantactivities. While it’s not possible to estimate this income with perfect accuracy, reasonable estimates have been derived from figures supplied by the Art Center.Estimates reflect the last eleven years, during which a couple of years weresomewhat slower, and several years were somewhat higher. All numbers areaverages.Students per year: 1,000Out-of-town visitors to fairs and events: 1,000–1,500Artists-in-residence per year: 16Employees: 15Gallery visitors: 10 – 80 per day (depending on the season)plus 100 each Second Saturday of the monthWorkshops offered: 100 –130Workshop length: 2 1/2 daysStudent nights @ 80% of total: 2,400Student meals @ 80% of total: 7,200Lodging income @ $120/night: $288,000Dining income @ $60/day: $144,000Total dining and lodging from out-of-town students: $432,000These estimated student averages do not include expenditures by spouses orother family, or gift shopping or other activities in the area, which are certainlyresponsible for additional income to local business. They do not reflect the numberof people who moved here just because of MAC. The dollars those people put intothe community in terms of real estate purchases, commissions, or rentals wouldincrease the numbers exponentially. The figures above also do not include salariesto employees, MAC payments to over two hundred local artists and businesses, orspending by artists-in-residence, which amount to some $500,000 going directlyback into the local economy. If we add the student expenditures to this $500,000,the Art Center brings roughly a million dollars to our community each year. It’sunderstood that for the past few decades, visitors to our area are not coming solelybecause MAC is here; at this point, MAC is part of a thriving community with muchto offer visitors. But the million-dollar estimate is based on the Art Center’s directpayments into the community and from folks who come to Mendocino specificallyto take classes at the Mendocino Art Center.
