Our Health Staff will review this form prior to the arrival of your
camper. Each camper must have on file at camp a completed, current
Health History form with a parent's/guardian’s signature.
• Although a physician’s exam is not required, it is recommended.
(The back of the Health History is for a physician’s report)
• The Health History form must be updated every year a camper attends camp.
Parent’s Information Form - (Gray form)
This gives the counselor some knowledge of the camper's background
and interests for camp. It is helpful in planning cabin group activities
appropriate for your child. Information is kept confidential between
parents and staff.
Camper Letter - (Yellow form)
This insightful piece gives campers a chance to share their expectations
which can help the counselor.
Silver Spurs & Target Sports Club Form - (Tan form)
Target Sports is for ages 11-14 only.
These special clubs are available only to campers in “Summer Camp” for
an additional fee of $25. If your child wishes to enroll in one of these
BEFORE CAMP: Camper Preparation
PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR CAMP:
Going away to camp for a week can be a challenging experience for a child of any
age. Short-term separation from parents and learning to be independent are
important parts of growing up. Some children have a normal anxiety that comes
with going away to camp. What a parent says prior to camp can either increase
or decrease this anxiety.
Let your child know that you have confidence in his/her ability to cope with the
new life style at camp. Focus on the positive aspects of camp; making new
friends, exciting activities, and how proud you will be when they succeed, rather
than how much you will miss them.
TIPS FOR PREVENTING HOMESICKNESS:
Have your child help pack his/her bags for camp. Knowing where he/she has all of
his/her belongings is comforting to the camper and prevents anxiety.
To help prepare your child for camp or to share in your child’s camp experience,
you might consider participating in our “Family Days” or “Family Camp” held in
the Spring and the Fall.
Help your child anticipate a good week at camp!
• Being familiar with camp helps: talk with experienced campers, discuss the
daily routine, visit the camp, and call us with questions.
• Overnight visits with friends or relatives may help your camper adjust to
being comfortable away from parents and family.
• Set your child up for success: don’t promise to rescue your child if he or she
is homesick. Focus on providing positive support and how proud you will be
when he/she succeeds. Campers who make up their minds to enjoy the week
avert homesickness by seeking new friends and getting involved in camp
activities.
• Some campers feel guilty about leaving the family or a pet behind. Assure
your camper that you love him/her that you will be happy thinking about the
good experiences he/she is having, and that you’ll look forward to hearing
about them after camp.
• Please don’t suggest phone calls - these are extremely difficult to manage,
and campers should focus on having fun and participating, not on a phone
call.
• Do write to your camper or send magic mail - you may even want to mail a
letter ahead of time so it arrives early in the week, or drop one off with staff
at check-in. Don’t tell them how much you miss them; do ask specific
questions about what they’re doing, and encourage them to write back.
If you believe your child may have unusual difficulties with homesickness, please
let us know on the parent information form or call us at (402) 434-9222.
BEFORE CAMP: What to Pack
Special Instructions:
• Help your camper pack his/her bags; it can be an uncomfortable feeling
being in a new place and not knowing where to find your belongings.
during lost and found times.
• Send old items or clothes you don’t mind getting dirty or lost
(not new or valuable items!)
Medications - If your child needs to take medication, prescription or
over-the-counter during camp, it must be given to the Health Staff at check-in.
Camp provides over-the-counter medication to campers on an as-needed basis.
Remember to list any over-the-counter medication your child cannot take on the
Health History form. Medications must be in the original container with clear
instructions. Please only send medication your child takes on a regular basis.
Health Staff are available for visitation with parents as desired or necessary on
opening days during check-in.
Help keep Bed Bugs out of Camp Kitaki - Camp Kitaki has not yet had any
problems with this pest, and we are doing all we can to keep it that way. Staff
have attended trainings and contacts have been made with our pest control
service to ensure we are ready if any issues come up. To help us out, here are a
couple of tips:
• Wash and dry (on high heat) all items you are sending to Camp Kitaki prior to
packing your camper’s bag.
• If you are concerned that you may have an infestation, or have recently
traveled and may have been somewhere with an infestation, contact Camp
Kitaki to work through how to best prepare your gear and how Kitaki can
help make sure the pests don’t come with your camper.
• For more information on Bed Bugs visit http://lancaster.unl.edu/pest/
Activities - Kitaki is a busy place. The program has been carefully designed to
include a variety of experiences. Cabin groups will do lots of fun-filled activities
such as hikes, swimming, horseback riding, crafts and much more! There are also
periods each day for chore duties and clean-up.
Camp reserves the right to alter activities and/or plans due to weather or other
factors in order to offer the best and safest experience for all. Inclement
weather, such as heavy rain or extremely hot weather, may affect our ability to
operate certain activities safely. Weather doesn’t dictate fun though!
Club Blocks -Early in the week, “Summer Camp” campers will sign up for 3
different clubs. They will join these clubs 3 mornings during the week. Clubs
include a wide variety of activities. Clubs vary from week to week and from year
to year. Silver spurs members spend one hour in this club. Target sports
members spend three hours in this club.
Swim Test - Campers will participate in a swim test shortly after check-in on
Sunday afternoon to evaluate their swimming ability and are required to swim
one length of the pool without resting. Campers who successfully complete this
test are given a swim band. This allows them access to the slide at the pool, and
depending on age, use of the swing at the lake. Swimming is not allowed in the
Camp Kitaki lake. Campers without swim bands must have a counselor in their
boat at the camp lake and are kept on the shallow end of our gradual entry pool.
Additional opportunities throughout the week are given to pass the swim test.
DURING CAMP: Other Topics
Meals and Sending Food - Camp provides balanced meals in adequate quantity
and variety to accommodate reasonable appetites and diets.
Healthy snacks are provided between meals in the Dining Hall. Snacks are
available for purchase in the camp store each night after dinner.
If you do choose to send extra food, please send enough to share with your
child’s entire cabin group and to be consumed in one day. We do not want to
attract bugs! Please keep in mind the possible food allergies or diet limitations of
other campers. (do not send items with nuts)
Special dietary needs should be communicated with camp prior to your camper’s
arrival. If you have a serious limited diet (vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, diabetic
etc.) please call the office to discuss this with our staff. See the (green) Health
History form.
Cabin Groups - Campers are assigned to a cabin group of 8-10 children of
similar age and gender in the same program. Summer Camp cabin groups may be
separated for club activities because of the special interest nature of clubs.
Ranch camp groups will be split into riding groups based on riding ability for
safety.
Cabin Mates - Cabin assignments are made by staff prior to the start of each
session. Campers are grouped by age, gender, and program. We strive to have an
age difference of no more than 18 months in a cabin unless the number of
cabins available dictates otherwise. We recommend that siblings are not placed
in the same cabin. We attempt to honor requests for friends to bunk together if
this request is made prior to camp and deemed by the camp to be in the best
interest of all. Cabin mates attending Ranch Camp might be placed in different
riding groups based on riding ability. Cabin mate requests are not guaranteed.
Both campers must request each other.
Early Check Out/Absences - We want all campers to enjoy everything we offer.
Interruptions to a camper's week, such as leaving for summer sporting events,
etc... make it difficult for campers to fully experience the benefits of camp.
Parents are encouraged to make summer arrangements around the camp session
so the campers can enjoy 100% of the camp experience. Uninterrupted, we can
do our best for your youth.
If your child needs to leave camp early OR be absent from camp, please make
arrangements with the office prior to the session, or at the Dining Hall and cabin
upon check-in. The early check-out times will be at 8:00 am., noon, or 6:00 pm.
on Friday, or 7:30 am. on Saturday. Thank you for your cooperation.
8

DURING CAMP: Other Topics
Behavior At Camp - Attending camp is a privilege that you as a parent have
chosen for your child. Our staff will make every attempt to provide positive,
realistic expectations and guidelines for your child. Every camper must make a
commitment to follow the camp rules. In extreme cases, campers who cannot act
within camp rules or who adversely affect the safety or experience of other
campers will be dismissed without a refund. Parents are responsible to transport
their child home when dismissed, including Niobrara and Leadership campers.
Dress Code - If clothes disrupt the camp environment, campers may be asked to
change. We require midriffs to be covered and undergarments not be exposed.
No clothing or t-shirts are allowed that send violent, gang, or inappropriate
messages. This is enforced at the discretion of the Camp Staff.
Spiritual Emphasis - This Young Men’s Christian Association’s camp teaches
campers a daily way of living patterned on Christian values and character. We
believe campers learn best from staff who model honorable behavior, speak and
act appropriately, and who aren’t afraid to discuss spiritual matters openly with
children. We welcome campers and staff of all faiths to Camp Kitaki, with the
understanding that chapels, vespers, devotions, graces at meals and prayer will
all be based on Christianity. Parents who feel strongly about a particular worship
or spiritual aspect of his/her child’s growth may discuss this with the Camp
Director.
CAMP POLICES/ITEMS TO NOTE:
Changing Sessions - If you must change your child's session, the request must
be made in writing and submitted to the camp office. Changes will be made only
when feasible. After April 1st there is a $20 service charge assessed for
each change.
Refunds/Cancellation - If a child cannot attend the session originally registered
for because of a medical emergency, he/she can transfer to a later session, if
available, or cancel. If cancellation is the only option, with written confirmation
by a doctor, fees already paid, minus the deposit, will be refunded. Please
contact the camp office if your camper will not be attending.
If a camper leaves before the end of the session, for any reason, camp and
program fees will be forfeited to camp. Unused camp store money will be
refunded.
Deposit - is not refundable nor transferable, regardless of the reason or time of
cancellation.
9

DURING CAMP: Staying in Touch
MAIL
Campers will enjoy hearing from home. Remember the tone of a letter will play an
important part in making the camper's experience a happy one. Send news from
home, but try not to express how much you or the dog miss them! Make your
letters upbeat, newsy, and friendly. Homesickness is common at camp, but we do
have great success in dealing with it. Please remember: Camper-sick parents very
easily make homesick campers.
Campers are encouraged to write home, but don’t be surprised if you don’t hear
from them. Campers lead a busy life, and usually no news is good news. Camp is
a new environment and some children will need time to adjust to the new
surroundings, so early mail might sound uncertain.
• Stationary, envelopes, postcards and stamps are sold through the camp
store.
• Sending pre-addressed and pre-stamped envelopes aides campers in writing
home.
• Mail is taken and picked up from the Post Office, and delivered to campers
daily, however USPS delivery times can vary.
DURING CAMP: Staying in Touch
Facebook - Visit our Facebook page to keep up with information from Camp
Kitaki.
Flickr Photo Gallery - Visit our online photo gallery at
www.flickr.com/campkitaki for periodic photo updates from camp. Camp strives to
post pictures from every session on a periodic basis, but cannot guarantee
pictures of individual campers.
Photographs - Many pictures and videos are taken each session. Often they are
used for camp promotional pieces. If you do not want your campers in these
photos and videos, a separate letter must be sent to the Camp Director, and
attached to the Health History Form. If we do not hear prior to his/her arrival, we
will assume you have no objections. To protect the privacy of all campers,
public posting of personal photos by campers is prohibited.
Phone Calls - Campers do not have use of a telephone while at camp.
Do not promise your child/children that they will be able to call home
during the week. Camp is about learning independence and proving the camper
can do it on his or her own.
• Camper cellular phones are not allowed. Please do not send a cell phone
with your child.
• Because of the nature of camp, it may be difficult for parents to reach
campers and they should do so only in a family emergency. In case of
emergency, the camp phone number is (402) 234-4141.
Visitors - Camp Kitaki does not have a visitor day due to short sessions and
activities when campers may be out of camp such as hikes, canoe trips, etc...
Tours of Kitaki’s facilities are recommended at check-out time so the camper may
share his/her experience with family and friends.
For the security of our campers, unscheduled
visits are not allowed.
11

DURING CAMP: Health and Safety
Even though we take every precaution, keep in mind that there is risk involved
with being in the outdoors.
Safety - The best way to treat injuries is to prevent them. Our staff members are
selected for their maturity and good judgment and are trained to make good
choices. Our program and facility are reviewed regularly by the Health
Department and the American Camp Association.
Health Care Staff - A Health Care Specialist, certified in First Aid and CPR, is on
staff and available 24 hours a day. The HCS is trained to provide assistance with
minor injuries and will transport campers in the case of an emergency.
Health Check - During check in we must:
• Verify the information on the health history form. Please inform us of any
health concerns that we need to be aware of at this time.
• Medications must be given to our Health Care Staff.
• Check each camper for head lice. If lice are found campers are sent home and
may rejoin the session after completing treatment.
• Check on the health of each camper. We cannot accept campers with
symptoms of communicable diseases (Example: Flu) to ensure the health and
safety of the entire camp population.
Insurance Information - Camp Kitaki does not have a camper insurance policy;
medical/surgical or medicinal charges incurred while at camp are the
responsibility of the camper’s parent/guardian.
Injury/Illness - Camp Kitaki will make every attempt to notify you before making a
doctor’s appointment or an emergency room visit for your child while they are in
our care. We will call all phone numbers given to us on the Health History form. If
emergency service is needed, Midlands Hospital in Papillion is 20 minutes away
from our camp site.
• Communicable Illness: Parents will be asked to pick up their child.
Camper may return to camp 24 hours after symptoms subside. This is
to prevent the further spread of illness/disease.
• Minor Health Needs: Will be cared for by our health care staff without
notification from parents unless you request it on the Health History form.
This includes dispensing over-the-counter medications.
Severe Weather/Emergencies - We have established procedures and trained
our staff to respond to these situations. Camp has good shelter facilities from
tornados and storms. In inclement weather, campers are moved into our sheltered
buildings. Phone calls during these already demanding times are difficult.
12

AFTER CAMP: Check Out
Check-Out:
Parents should pick up their campers between 10:00 am and 10:45 am
Saturday morning on the last day of the session.
Park, load the camper's gear, and be sure to sign them out with the counselor.
Be sure to check that he/she are leaving with everything they packed.
Often campers want to show their parents around the camp facility and introduce
you to their horse. The barn and camp store close at 10:45 am., so please plan
accordingly when making arrangements to pick up your child. Even if you or your
camper have been to camp many times, he/she may want to show you what has
changed since your last visit.
Lost And Found:
Camp Kitaki is not responsible for loss or theft of articles. Campers are
encouraged not to bring valuable items or clothing to camp.
In order to limit the number of items in lost and found, please mark each article
your child brings to camp with his/her full name. We have close to 10,000
campers annually and initials and first names only will not be tracked easily.
If you find that your camper has left an article of clothing, please call Camp Kitaki
directly at (402) 234-4141 with a description of the item. We will contact you if
your item has been found and arrange for pickup. We will hold the item for two
weeks. Any remaining items will be donated to local charities.
13

AFTER CAMP: Other Opportunities
Let us know how your child enjoyed camp!
EVALUATION
An important part of each summer is the evaluation of our program, facilities,
equipment and staff.
An evaluation form will be sent home in the folder your child receives at the
end of the week.
Please fill the evaluation out and let us know how to better serve your child.
Or fill it out online at www.ymcalincoln.org/kitaki.
We want to improve in every way and we need your comments to do so!
CONTINUING THE MAGIC…
Senior Kitaki Kids - You have the opportunity to join one of the nation's top
YMCA Teen programs. Senior Kitaki Kids has over a 30-year history of working
with teens. You will have fun, do service for others, gain life long leadership skills
