MATHEMAgIC at the Gladstone (1214
or NXNE wristband/pass. nxne.com.
In the last year, Guelph’s Mathemagic
have gone from an unknown
bedroom recording project by
brothers Evan and Dylan Euteneier
to a group with a
debut self- titled EP released
on Paper Bag who are getting
written about on hip
music blogs and being tagged as
canada’s answer to the chillwave fad.
Funnily, it was only recently that
they learned of blogs and chillwave.
“We made a Myspace page for the
first song we did, and some guy from
transparentblog in the Uk asked us if
he could post it,” says Evan. “We didn’t
even have a single friend on Myspace. I
don’t know how he found us.
Identical twins Sari and
Romy Lightman, aka Ghost
Bees, are polite, soft-spoken
and quite charming in person.
But there’s something
strangely disconcerting about
the way they communicate wordlessly,
as if they’re having a private conversation.
Good thing the pair relish reactions
to their twin weirdness.
“I don’t think we creep each other
out, but I do think we creep other people
out,” says sari as she shares a sandwich
with her sister. “We can definitely
be creepy at times.”
indie
pop
“hell, I didn’t even know what a
music blog was. I went to his site and
was blown away by all this music I’d
never heard before. Now that’s where I
get all my new music.”
While the instant blog love may
have been a flukey accident, the
brothers’ shimmering ambient
pop soundscapes fit perfectly
with the sudden surge of bands
exploring similarly tripped- out
tangents.
But whereas most of their competition
use 80s pop as reference
points, Mathe magic have a subtle
tropical vibe that makes you think they
live closer to the equator than north of
the 49th parallel.
“We recorded the EP just as the
summer was ending and it was starting
to get cold,” says Evan. “I guess we
were trying to make it feel like it was
still summer.” BENJAMIN BOLES
their music pits ethereal melodies
against dark, gory subject matter. Parents,
be warned: this might be what
happens when you expose sweet
young girls to horror movies at an early
age, as the lightmans’ father did.
on Through A Glass Darkly, their
just-finished follow-up to 2008’s
tasseomancy, they tone down
the folk influences and beef up
the atmospherics. It was produced
by timber timbre’s taylor
kirk and simon trottier, who will
back them up at the Gladstone.
they’re also about to change their
name to tasseomancy, a word for the
art of reading tea leaves.
“Ghost Bees was a childhood inside
joke for us and kind of a secret,” explains
Romy. “It feels like we’ve outgrown
that name. this album is just so
much heavier and darker than what
we’ve previously done.” BENJAMIN BOLES
toronto garage punk outfit Teenanger
have no problem getting vulgar. take
their grotesque poster art or the title
of their sophomore album, Give Me
Pink, out on Telephone Explosion.
“We were in a hotel in Montreal,
pretty fucked up, watching free French
porn because we’re too broke to pay
for the regular kind,” says guitarist G.C.
Gary from a couch in toronto.
“all of a sudden, the words ‘Give me
pink!’ started flashing across the
screen, interspersed with a giant
dildo.”
teenager members Gary, vocalist
Alex Lekay, bassist/backup vocalist
Sharon Needles and a drummer
known as Salvatore use aliases for
practical reasons.
“We don’t exactly cross borders
legally,” says Gary cryptically, “which
makes touring especially difficult.”
there’s a sort of last- minute urgency
to everything they do, and it’s
evident in the songs themselves.
“We basically recorded the whole
album in the span of a day,” Gary says.
“It was a daunting task, but that’s how
we’ve always worked.” ANDREW RENNIE
If there was any question about Kid
Sister’s sincerity on Pro Nails, her
break out kanye- featured manicure
anthem, I can confirm that her enthusiasm
is very real.
From the start of our interview, she
talks excitedly about how she just did
her own nails, listing her favourite
salons and explaining her manicure
contingency plan when
she’s in remote places like australia.
the electro- rapper only
cools down a bit when I mention
that Pro Nails was my jam a
couple of years ago.
“I’m glad you liked the song,” she
says dryly from her place in chicago. “It
was a pretty good song.”
Maybe her change in tone comes
from the fact that she hasn’t followed
up the single with anything quite as big.
after multiple delays, her 2009 debut
album, Ultraviolet (Universal), was neither
a commercial nor critical smash.
“I’m grateful for that song every day,
cuz it’s really what started everything,”
she says. and despite Ultraviolet not
exactly taking off, kid sister is in the midst
of making some power moves. shortly
after our conversation, the rapper will enter
a los angeles studio with a couple of
the biggest names in pop music.
“I’m recording with travis Barker and
will.i.am,” she reveals nonchalantly.
“yeah, will.i.am came to a show
with apl.de.ap [also of Black Eyed Peas]
about a month and a half ago. My
manager was like, ‘yeah, you’re
gonna go into the studio with
them.’ I’m like, ‘okay. cool.
awesome.’”
she’s also busy prepping
new collaborations for other
people’s albums.
“I did a song for the Jersey shore
soundtrack with Nina sky, and I have a
song with Bun B on Paul Wall’s album,
coming out July 13.”
and while much of her upcoming
work will happen in l.a., kid sister
balks at the idea of ever abandoning
her chi- town roots.
