Out and About P.9
Can you believe it is August already? I guess you can, considering the heat we have had, but that hasn’t
impacted our events and attendance. We are averaging 30 – 35 members at our monthly dinner meetings on
the 2 nd Tuesday of each month. If you have a favorite restaurant with a separate dining area for that many,
let us know but considering half of our club reside in Williamson County, we tend to get the most
attendance in the Cool Springs area. We will be going to the Gerst Haus downtown in October (fest) and
the Lane Museum in November.
We had 6 cars attend the Keeneland Concours, and as always, it was a fun event. Thanks to Michael
Gillespie for planning our visit to this great event, and to Dan Martin for a lovely evening at a great
restaurant. We believe we have more great events planned for you in the coming months, so please come
out and enjoy the fellowship (and Porsches) of our members. If you would like to help up plan and maybe
lead an event, please do so. We would love to get more support from our members. We have discussed a
―show and shine‖ event somewhere many times, so maybe there is someone who can help us identify a
great venue and plan the event.
If you haven’t heard, Todd is back as service advisor at Porsche of Nashville. We are glad to have him
back, and are thankful to the entire organization (Robert, Art, Lee, Anita, etc) for their support to our club.
We are also privileged to have a great 356 Tennessee Tubs organization to partner with, as they have a
great group of members and of course the Porsches.
Please join us for our upcoming dinner on Aug 9 at Cozymel’s, and don’t forget about Carl’s (also known
as Chief) Vintage Garage event on Aug 20, Pritchard’s Rum Run in September followed by dinner put
together by Vic Davis. There is also the Porsche Parade that several folks will be attending, and finally
Rennsport Reunion IV which Shirley and I will be going to. I know of several members going to Rennsport
so let me know if you are so we can get together for lunch or dinner in Monterrey or Carmel. Until next
month, Auf Wiedersehen!
Vintage Classic
Garage Rally
Saturday August 20 th , 2011 is the date set for the
Tennessee Tubs Scenic Rally. Starting point for the
rally will be Carl George’s Vintage Classic Garage.
Vintage Classic Garage is located at 211 Gothic
Court in Cool Springs. Rally goers will start
gathering around 9:00am for coffee and car talk,
with a short Tech Session starting around 9:45am.
The Rally instructions will be handed out at a drivers
meeting starting at 10:50am, with staggered starts
beginning at 11am. The rally is about 1 ½ hours
long and will end up at Millers Grocery in Christiana
between 12:30pm -1:00pm.
You will need a navigator for the Rally to relay
driving instructions and to help answer questions
along the route. It is not a race and you can be
penalized by time and distance so you need a good
navigator. You will be signing a hold harmless form
to participate and winners must be driving a
Porsche.
Directions:
From I-65 heading south, take Exit 69 Moores
Lane to Mallory Lane south. Then turn right onto
Mallory Station Road, then left on Gothic Court.
From I -65 heading north, take exit 68 Cool
Springs Blvd. heading west. Then turn right onto
Mallory Lane, then left onto Mallory Station Road
to Gothic Court on left.
3
At the end of the rally, everyone is on their own
for lunch at Millers or at other locations in
Murfreesboro. The Rally Master will share the
correct answers after the Rally but dependent
upon number of participants the winners may be
disclosed later in the day by email. This will be a
great event to show case your Porsche, your
driving skills and have some fun, so get them
cleaned up and gassed up, and ready to go.

Early in 2010 I got the bug to buy a car to
work on with my 17-year old son. When I was
a teenager my friends and I worked on our
cars, including my friend’s 1969 GTO and my
1969 Mustang. Sure wish I still had that one.
I had gotten hooked on the cable show
Wheeler Dealers about a couple of Brits who
buy older cars, fix them up and resell them. I
was particularly intrigued by a show on a
Porsche 924. 924’s came out when I was in
high school and a friend had come close to
buying one.
Did a little research and figured out a latermodel
924S was the way to go. So I found a
nice 1987 model on eBay in Pennsylvania,
bought it for $2,800 and had it shipped here.
Fortunately the paint, bodywork, engine and
transaxle were all in pretty decent shape.
But I still replaced brakes, rotors, front
wheel bearings, battery, sunroof gears, fixed
the broken odometer, stuck rear hatch,
motor mounts etc etc. A lot of the work I was
able to do myself at least. I even wrote a
blog about the 10-month experience and
hundreds of hours working on the thing
(http://www.924project.com).
When finished I ended
up with this:
6
In October of last year I decided to
go all in and find a nice 911. I knew it
wouldn’t handle as well as the 924 but
was interested in having more
horsepower. Unfortunately it meant to
keep the peace at home I would have
to sell the 924S. My patient spouse
wanted to be able to park in the
garage again.
I found one locally that I was outbid on, but other than that didn’t find
one that I was interested in. So I went back to eBay and found a couple that
I bid on. The one I ended up winning was a beautiful arctic silver 2001 C2
coupe in Long Island, so I flew up and drove it back down. That’s an
interesting story in itself, the owner didn’t trust a cashier’s check so I had
to carry the purchase price in cash. Thought for sure I’d have to be
interrogated by the trusty TSA about that, but everything worked out.
Being in PCA has been a great
help. I have met others who work
on their own cars and have offered
suggestions and assistance. I really
enjoy the drive & eat events and
wish we could do more of them.
The local dealer and the
independent shops have been very
helpful and friendly. My wife and I
have enjoyed all the new friends we
have made at the various club
functions.

Enter The Mille 2011 Sponsored by Porsche USA
Back in 2008, a group in Germany organized by Ingo Robener, and known
as “PorscheFreunde”, put together a parade lap of 2325 Porsches and set a
Guinness World Record for the “largest parade of Porsche cars” that still
stands today. TheMille.com (online home of the Mille 2011 Sponsored by
Porsche) is taking a shot at breaking the record this November at the
Atlanta Motor Speedway.
With support from Porsche Cars North America, and supplemented by
many national and local sponsors, the Mille provides multiple activities
(i.e. various Porsche model corrals, autocross events, Porsche Cars “For
Sale” Corral, Porsche Parts & Literature Swap Meet, etc.) for Porsche
owners, enthusiasts and their families. The cornerstone of the event is, of
course, an attempt at a Guinness World Record with the largest number of
Porsches in a single parade.
Classic, Current and Racing Porsches All
Participating
To help facilitate the attempt, the Mille 2011 Sponsored by Porsche has
arranged with the Georgia State Patrol, Henry County Sheriffs Department
and the Georgia Department of Transportation to allow and escort all
Porsche cars (including current and historic Porsche race cars) on the
three (3) mile parade route along public roads.
How You Can Participate
The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th, 2011 at the Atlanta
Motor Speedway. If you are interested in being part of the record breaking
group, visit us on the web at www.themille.com for additional details.
Out and About
With Greg Gratkowski
If you have never been to the Keeneland Concours in Lexington KY it is
definitely worth the trip. It is a great drive and not so far that you could
not make a day trip out of it. Keeneland has grown over the years to become
one of the premier events in the country (all proceeds benefit the KY
Children’s Hospital), but the concours is only one piece of this event. There
are vendor booths set up to demonstrate (and sell) automotive products, a
wonderful art gallery with automotive pieces for sale, silent auctions, a
raffle (this years big raffle was a Porsche Boxster), and the car corrals.
Every marquee has their own area at the front of the grounds for parking
which makes it a show within a show. There is something for everyone
Porsches, Ferraris,BMW’s, VW, Audi, Muscle cars, exotic cars, Vintage
and one of a kind automobiles. Where else could you see all of these great
cars in one place? Keeneland is like an all you can eat buffet for anyone who
appreciates everything automotive. Just try not to drool on the cars. Perhaps
a bib would be in order. The weather for the event was perfect this year. We
arrived and were asked to park in the corral at the front entrance to the
grounds facing the entrance road to the concours because the Bluegrass guys
thought our car was pretty cool. The turnout this year was awesome to say
the least with 80+ Porsches in attendance, and hundreds of others in the car
corrals and in the spectator lot. For over an hour there were so many cars
rolling in you could not see the end of traffic. WOW what a day.
Mark your calendar for next
year’s event. Packard will be the
featured marquee in 2012. Who
knows what piece of automotive
history will show up for us to
salivate over? We could even
help the Bluegrass Region blow
the other clubs off the map with
more Porsches in one place than
KY has ever seen.
GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING
Submitted by George Popovich
10
Realizing that it was Independence Day weekend, I commented to my good friend Joe that there might not be that many
cars this morning. This small fact dawned on me while we sped down highway 96 from Murfreesboro to Franklin at 7:30
am. "That's OK," replied Joe, "you never know, I'm just happy to be out of the house. Either way, we'll have a cup of coffee
and enjoy this nice drive."
When we arrived at Carrabba's at 8:00 my heart sunk. We were the fourth car to arrive. One other Porsche was there
early. The P-cars always seem to be there early, I wonder why? Didn't matter, we had arrived--cars or no cars--and I
wanted a mocha-coconut frappe because it was already getting hot outside. So Joe and I sauntered into Starbucks and
ordered our drinks. By the time we came out, a few more cars had pulled in.
"Might not be so bad after all," claimed the patient man. I wasn't so sure.
As we walked around looking at the handful of cars that arrived and sipping on our venti girlie iced-coffees, my fears of
an uneventful morning began to wash away. More gorgeous cars began to back into spaces. Hoods began to open and
men started talking about what men love to talk about--cars.
On the drive there, Joe asked if there would be an Audi R8. I told him that I had not seen one there, but I had never been
on the first of the month when the ultra-exotic super cars showed up. I was hoping to see one as well.
By 9:00 the exotic cars started showing up. We were like two kids in a candy store. The Lambos and the Ferraris began
pulling in, the Porsches all pulled in together and a very nice collection of muscle cars showed up--hoods open,
magnificent V-8's on display. A purple GTO caught my attention. I have a fondness for those old Pontiacs and I love
purple.
A Nissan GT-R came rolling in. I've only seen one on the road. Finally a black car caught my attention. I motioned to Joe
and he grinned--his Audi R8 had arrived. I snapped a pic of him standing by it and later that day it became his profile pic
on Facebook. By 9:15 @ 80 or so cars arrived. Women and children also showed up. I thanked God that it wasn't a bust--
I would have felt terrible getting my buddy Joe out of his bed at 6:00 am to see a handful of cars.
Just when things were getting good, they got even better. A Ferrari backed into a spot. Could it be? No, certainly not. Yes,
it was. A magnificent Ferrari F40. It was like Angelina Jolie had arrived--a crowd of men descended on the car, cameras
in tow like a paparazzi of gear heads. I smiled at Joe and said, "you don't see that every day, huh?"
It was a great morning. There were so many wonderful cars to look at and equally as great people to meet and talk to.
Everyone that attends Cars and Coffee is more than eager to talk cars. Whether it's American muscle, antique European
or modern exotic--men (and women!) love to talk cars and swap stories. And one of the great things about this weekly
event is that it is early enough on Saturday that you have the whole day left to get things done and enjoy a nice ride in
your car through the crisp morning air. So get up, grab your wife or kid and come down to Carrabba's at Cool Springs
between 8:00 and 9:30 and check out the cars, you won't regret it.
We had a great morning. I let Joe drive my 987 back to the 'Boro. He grinned all the way down highway 96.
Check out our pics to follow!

breakthrough moment came that August, when he took first
place in a Racers Edge prepared Porsche 944S2 at Virginia
International Raceway.
In 2009, he was offered a seat with the three-car RSR
Motorsports Team for the full 2009 GRAND-AM Koni Sports
Car Challenge Series season. That July, Buford placed fourth at
Barber Motorsports. He was later offered a test in the Racers
Edge Motorsports Rolex Mazda RX-8 GT Car, began racing in
both the GRAND-AM Continental Sports Car Challenge Series
and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and competed in
the Rolex 24 at Daytona
For 2011, Jade will run the full season in the Grand-AM
Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge with one of the top teams,
Kinetic Motorsports. He is driving the Kinetic's #33, a 2010
BMW M3 in the GS Class. Check out his website at
Reunion IV Update
Stellar lineup of drivers and cars for
Porsche’s celebration of its motorsport
heritage
For the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV taking place at Mazda Laguna
Seca Raceway in October, it’s both the men and machines that are
expected to draw one of the largest crowds in track history. And, if
early sign-ups are any indication, both elements will not disappoint.
Just a glance at the guest list reveals names that are well entrenched in
Porsche Motorsport history. For example, Vic Elford, who won the
Monte Carlo Rally and scored Porsche’s first overall win at the 24
Hours of Daytona – on back-to-back weekends; James Weaver,
Porsche 962 driver for Dyson Racing and a Daytona and Sebring
winner; Gijs van Lennep, Dutch Porsche 917 and 911 driver who won
Le Mans with Helmut Marko and the last Targa Florio with Herbert
Müller; Chip Robinson, IMSA champion with Al Holbert in a
Porsche 962; George Follmer, who took the turbocharged 917 to Can-
Am championship; Dan Gurney, who scored Porsche’s first successes
in Formula 1; and Hurley Haywood, the most successful Porsche
endurance driver with wins at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans. More
than 50 drivers of similar stature
have already said ―yes‖ to Porsche’s invitation for the October 14-16,
2011, Rennsport event. The rest of the names will be announced as
the event gets closer.
And it’s not just drivers that made their Porsche race cars famous.
Attendees will include Norbert Singer, recently-retired Porsche
Motorsport engineer, known as the father of the Porsche 962; Hans
Mezger, who headed up the Porsche Motorsport racing engine
function from his Dan Gurney F1 motors through the 917, 935, 962
and McLaren F1 engine; and Alwin Springer, former Vasek Polak
917 crew member who later built engines at his company Andial and
served as president of Porsche Motorsports North America.Jörg
Bergmeister, Patrick Long, and the rest of the current Porsche factory
drivers, will all attend Rennsport.
The Porsche Club of America is honored to assist the Porsche
Rennsport Reunion IV with several activities: History of the Porsche
911 Display, Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade
laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership Center, two race
groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club
Racing for PCA race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to
assist with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport Reunion
Cup race, Michelin Tire Company comes on board as the spec tire
manufacturer for that exciting contest.
We are looking for exceptional examples of Porsche 911 production
models for the History of the orsche 911 Display at Mazda Raceway
Laguna Seca during the event. It will be a display representing the
911 model throughout its generational life. Please contact Tom
Provasi for information and registration at tprovasi@netgate.net or
408/947-0980.
PCA members will be invited to use a terrific PCA Hospitality and
Membership Center that will be open for all days of the event,
October 14-16, to park safely in one of the Porsche Model-Specific
Parking Corrals (a corral parking ticket will be
required— please visit www.mazdaraceway.com for ticket
information), and to enjoy Parade laps of the track with their
Porsches.
We will need PCA volunteer workers to assist with our activities at
the Rennsport Reunion IV. If you are interested in supporting this
memorable event, please contact Sharon Neidel with the PCA
Volunteer Pool at sharonneidel@yahoo.com or 650/508-1308.
We will have a very special event memento for the volunteer
workers. Additional details of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV are
published on the following Porsche web site:
www.porsche.com/usa/rennsport-reunion-iv/
For additional information and event tickets please
visit the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca web site at
www.mazdaraceway.com or 800/327-7322.
Please stay tuned for more announcements in Panorama,
at www.pca.org and in E-Brake News.

About the PRCC
On October 16, 2011 the Porsche Race Car Classic
will bring together 200 Porsche race cars from 1950-
1965 at the world famous Quail Lodge in Carmel,
California. This gathering of purpose-built and
production Porsches represents the largest
gathering ever of the cars that put Porsche on the
racing map so many years ago.
The race cars will range from the 550 Spyders of the
early 50s to the 904s of the early 60s with all the
many purpose-built racing models represented plus
356 coupes, Speedsters, and more. The cars, their
owners, and the public will be joined by famous
Porsche race car drivers from that golden era of
Porsche’s history.
The Porsche Race Car Classic - which has been
years in planning - will be a fitting conclusion to
Porsche's Rennsport Reunion IV which will take
place just down the road at Mazda Raceway Laguna
Seca on the same weekend. While Rennsport IV will
have a few of these cars, the vast majority will be
only at the Porsche Race Car Classic and the
PRCC owes much to Porsche Cars North America
and Porsche AG who have been so supportive of
the Race Car Classic.
The Porsche Race Car Classic will offer all of the
amenities that are to be expected at the world-class
Quail Lodge venue. Meanwhile all net proceeds will
go directly to our charitable partners - the Bonnie J.
Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and the University
of California, San Francisco Thoracic Oncology
Program to aid in lung cancer research. The PRCC
is committed to raising significant funds to help to
battle this most-deadly and least-funded of the
major cancers.
