PROGRAMS FOR TEENSExp<strong>and</strong>ing Horizons <strong>and</strong> Learning New SkillsThe <strong>YMCA</strong> StaffOur strongest asset continues to be the dedicated, caring leadership <strong>of</strong>our staff team. All <strong>of</strong> our staff are chosen for their maturity <strong>and</strong> abilityto be excellent role models to the teens in our programs. Our rigorousselection process includes interview, reference checks, backgroundchecks <strong>and</strong> m<strong>and</strong>atory r<strong>and</strong>om drug testing. Staff training includesfirst aid, behavior management, group facilitation, games, <strong>and</strong>character development.Our Adventure Bound Trip Leaders have additional training <strong>and</strong>certifications in Wilderness First Aid, CPR, <strong>and</strong> Lifeguarding, as wellas trip specific skills such as kayaking, sailing, <strong>and</strong> rockclimbing.The relationship between a camper <strong>and</strong> their counselor is at the veryheart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>YMCA</strong>’s success. To facilitate these relationships, we keepour ratios low—1 leader to every 4 campers. Small group sizes (average<strong>of</strong> 10) allow counselors <strong>and</strong> campers to really get to know each other.When not on the road, teens in the Adventure Bound & Service Corpsprograms split their time between two incredible facilities—The <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Combe</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong>Eighty acres <strong>of</strong> pristine wilderness, large capacity swimming pool, low<strong>and</strong> high ropes course, archery range, game room, <strong>and</strong> athletic facilities.The Clear Lake Scout ReservationLocated just 5 minutes from <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Combe</strong>, the Clear Lake Scout Reservationboasts 1,400 acres <strong>of</strong> largely undeveloped l<strong>and</strong> with miles <strong>of</strong> hiking trails,incredible vistas, <strong>and</strong> two lakes for swimming <strong>and</strong> boating.

With challenging peaks <strong>and</strong> stunningviews <strong>of</strong> the Hudson valley, this will be one tripyou won’t forget.CATSKILL HIKE & BIKESessions: 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 Trip Length: 3 daysTrip Rating: moderateThis three day trip <strong>of</strong>fers spectacular views, beautifulwilderness <strong>and</strong> fast paced adventure. Day hike asummit, fly through the woods on a Mountain Bike,then sit around an evening campfire.Junior Lifeguarding Program (Ages 15-16)The Junior Lifeguarding program is open to applicants 15 years <strong>of</strong> age <strong>and</strong> older.Participants in this program complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training,Automatic External Defibrulation (AED) training, <strong>and</strong> Basic First Aid. <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Combe</strong> Service Corps”Be the change you want to see in the world.”-Gh<strong>and</strong>i<strong>YMCA</strong> Service Corps (Rising grades 7-9)Early adolescence is marked by an increased awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>and</strong> interest in the local <strong>and</strong>global community. <strong>Teens</strong> desiring to “give something back” to their communities are <strong>of</strong>tenfrustrated by the lack <strong>of</strong> opportunities to engage in meaningful <strong>and</strong> productive communityservice. By partnering with a variety <strong>of</strong> local service organizations including Fahnstock StatePark, Putnam Valley Food Bank, <strong>and</strong> ClearPool Outdoor Education Center, the <strong>YMCA</strong> ServiceCorps programs <strong>of</strong>fers campers the chance to participate in a two-week service projectdesigned <strong>and</strong> implemented by the campers themselves.In <strong>and</strong> around their service corps activities, campers participate in traditional day campactivities including swimming, hiking, canoeing, games, <strong>and</strong> crafts at the Clear Lake ScoutReservation in Putnam Valley (5 minutes from <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Combe</strong>).All prospective Service Corps campers must complete a short application <strong>and</strong> aninformational interview. Leaders in Arts”All the world’s a stage.”Arts <strong>Camp</strong> (Rising grades 7-9)-ShakespeareDesigned especially for older campers that have enjoyed <strong>and</strong> benefited from our visual <strong>and</strong>theater arts programs, our Leaders in Arts program allows older campers to serve as leadersin either the visual or theater arts camp programs. Leaders in theater are encouraged to takeon more challenging roles, write <strong>and</strong> prepare one act plays, gain basic directing experience,<strong>and</strong> assist younger campers in show preparation. Leaders in the visual arts programcomplete more complicated projects, receive more individualized attention, <strong>and</strong> pursuetheir own, independent interests.The Leaders in Arts program is based at the <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Combe</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong>. In addition to specialtyactivities, Leaders participate in traditional camp activities including swimming, archery, fieldgames, <strong>and</strong> the ropes course.

ment ProgramReady to LeadJunior CounselorProgram (Ages 15-16)The junior counselor program at<strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Combe</strong> is a highly selectiveprogram <strong>and</strong> requires successfulcompletion <strong>of</strong> our Counselor-In-Training Program or a comparablecommunity service experience <strong>and</strong>three letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation.Junior Counselors are assigned toa specific age group <strong>and</strong> assistcounselors in leading games,running activities, fostering groupcohesion, <strong>and</strong> supervising campers.This volunteer position requires40 hours <strong>of</strong> staff training <strong>and</strong> afour-week minimum commitment(OK if non-contiguous).
