Working at Northumbria
At Northumbria we strive to create an inclusive
environment where students and staff can work and learn
successfully together. Northumbria has a vision to
become one of the world’s leading teaching and learning
Universities and staff play a major role in this
development. We also have a strong commitment to
research and scholarly activity and offer a comprehensive
training and development programme for all employees.
We have an average income of over £200 million and
employ nearly 3000 people all of whom contribute to
Northumbria’s vision. In 2007 we opened a multi-million
pound award winning campus in the heart of the city
(below), developing our existing facilities with iconic
buildings to represent the future of the University.
This pack has been produced to help you to familiarise
yourself as a new member of staff at the University.
The City of Newcastle is reached by the A1(M)
from London in the south and Edinburgh in the
north; the A19 from York; the M6 from the
second exit off the roundabout
Signposted towards the A167 motorway.
to it up to another roundabout, at which you
should take the exit marked City Centre. You
will quickly come to a right turn signposted
Northumbria University. This right turn would
take you into the heart of the campus.
However, as there is very little public parking
available, it is advisable to drive past this
turning, then turn right at the next set of traffic
lights into John Dobson Street where you will
find a large NCP car park on the left.
minute walk from the City Campus.
Travelling to Coach Lane Campus
Coach Lane Campus is three miles east of
Newcastle in the suburb of Benton. The nearest
metro is Four Lane Ends which is approximately
ten minutes walk from the campus. There are
International Airport. If you are travelling to the
campus from the airport, you will need to
change metro at South Gosforth. The nearest
metro station to the City Campus is Haymarket.
The Number 1 bus runs every 8-10 minutes
and has pick-up points opposite Central
Station and outside the Civic Centre (opposite
the City Campus). This bus stops either inside
Coach Lane Campus or just outside,
depending on the time of day.

Visitors by car should take the A1058 Coast
Road, which runs between Newcastle and
How to pay Council Tax
Inform your local council as soon as you move
into the property. Council Tax bills should be
sent out in April and you have the right to pay
by ten instalments. Local authorities may
accept weekly or fortnightly payments (some
may also offer a reduction in the total bill if it is
paid all at once, at the beginning of the year.)
If you do not pay an instalment of council tax
on the date it is due, your local authority must
issue a reminder, asking for payment within
seven days. If you fail to pay within this period,
you lose the right to pay by instalments and a
full year's Council Tax becomes payable. If you
don't pay this within the next seven days, your
local authority can ask the magistrates to issue
a liability order. You could be sent to prison by
the magistrate's court if you do not pay.
