She also shared how impressed shewas with her recent tour of the STEAM Academy at <strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong>, Vista South <strong>School</strong>, and Vista Alternative <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.Mrs. Fernandez stated that she had attended the STEAM Academy touras well, and it was remarkable to see the students in action.Ms. Nikki Dahl, Cibola <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Student Body President, reportedon events at Cibola, including an update on athletics. Boys and GirlsBasketball qualified for state playoffs; Boys Wrestling won theirsectional championship and will compete at State this weekend.Student Council will be at the state convention, the theme is“Leadership is Out of This World”; Cibola Staff is participating in theirversion of the “Biggest Loser” weight loss competition; and the Winterpep assembly was successful. Teacher of the year candidates are TesaSchneider and Josh Norlien; First Year Teacher of the candidate isMorgan Davis –Brown. Mr. Raider pageant will be held on February24 th at 7pm in the Cibola Auditorium; Cibola Choir had three sold-outChristmas performances in December and will hold their Tour of<strong>Yuma</strong> concert series in March. Drama Department completed fourtotal small shows; Mrs. Hendrick-Jones and Mrs. Rutzebeck will haveover 80% of the entries in the Redondo Days Art Competition; andAcademic Decathlon competed in the <strong>Reg</strong>ional Competition at GilaRidge <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. They qualified for State and were the mostimprovedteam for the region this year. Upcoming events include thetwo one-act shows during the first week of March, and the SpringMusical “The 25 th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on April 19 thand 20 th . Construction on the new classroom addition is ongoing andwill be completed for the next school year.Ms. Alexandria Harper, Kofa <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Student Body Secretary,reported on events at Kofa. They have approximately 558 seniors online to graduate; seniors had their final opportunity to order their capand gown on February 7 th . Senior AVID and Gear Up students alongwith their parents will complete FAFSA paperwork tonight; StudentCouncil delegates leave tomorrow for the State Conference in Peoria;CHS Band will be marching in the Silver Spur Rodeo Parade onFebruary 11 th ; StuCo is sponsoring “Random Acts of Kindness” weeknext week; Mr. Kofa will be held next Thursday at 7pm; Home RoomForums are being held on a monthly basis. Students are registering for the JROTC classes for next school year;Kofa is excited to be the pilot school for the program. Congratulationsto Mrs. Thompson for being selected Rodel Exemplary Principal.Ms. Mayra Jauregui, San Luis <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Student Body President;Ms. Cristina Piceno, SLHS Student Body Vice President; and Ms.Alexa Mata, SLHS Senior Class Representative, reported on activitiesat San Luis <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. The Science Department will be holding their7 th Annual Science Night for the community and surrounding schools.Student Council will be fundraising during Love Week; students willuse the monies raised to assist a local community member with medicalexpenses. Cambridge course work is going well; students are currentlylearning history on Israel and Palestine. There were many San Luis<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> winners at the Academic Decathlon; Spring sports havestarted; the new bus barn has been finished and looks awesome. Theshell of the new auditorium has been completed; students are lookingforward to their new auditorium.Mrs. Badone commended Mr. Tony Garcia, YHS Campus FacilitiesSupervisor, for his dedication and all the good things accomplished at<strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Mr. Garcia has served the <strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>Union</strong> <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> for 26 years in our Facilities Management Department,first at Kofa <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> where he began in September, 1985 workingas a groundskeeper at $5.27/hr., and then, most recently, at <strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong> as Campus Facilities Supervisor. At <strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> he hasstrategically planned and implemented an improvement of the campusin appearance, cleanliness, efficiency and performance.Mrs. Badone recognized Mrs. Gina Thompson, Kofa Principal, as aRodel Exemplary Principal. Those present who made the awardpossible were Ms. Jackie Norton, President, Rodel Foundation; Mr.Tom Tyree, <strong>Yuma</strong> County Superintendent; and Ms. Judy Gresser,<strong>Yuma</strong> Community Foundation. Rodel Exemplary Principals wereselected for their demonstrated ability to lead high-need schools tosuccess by inspiring their staffs to develop a campus that is highachieving, safe, orderly and welcoming. Thompson will mentoraspiring principals in <strong>Yuma</strong> for the next two years as part of theprogram.Mrs. Badone stated that the YUHSD had been invited to have a timecapsule as part of the <strong>Yuma</strong> County’s Centennial Celebration. Twotime capsules were put together. One was painted and beautifullydecorated, which will be used for display at the art museum. The otheraluminum tin capsule will be sealed with wax and set in the actual timecapsule. She statedthat at this point in the year, budgets should be at approximately 58%.We are currently at 47%.Mr. Dave Hylland, Director, Facilities Management provided an updateon the Bond Update and the <strong>District</strong> Wide Energy Cost SavingsProject. Mr. Tim Brady, Project Manager, Climatec stated that theenergy project had started back in June. Commissioning phase willbegin in March with project being wrapped up by April. Extensiveretrofitting has been done to support new high efficiency bulbs. HVACsystems are set at higher set points when classrooms and areas areunoccupied during the day. Mechanically, new cooling towers havebeen replaced at <strong>Yuma</strong> and Cibola <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>s to increase thecooling capacity. Air handlers have been replaced at <strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong> Auditorium. Main control ventilations have been installed in allgymnasiums. Project cost $7.9 million, which will be financed throughthe annual savings that the district will save on energy costs. Expenditures for the last 3years have been in the range of $4 million. As they continue todeal with unavoidable increases in operational costs, theircommitment continues to be student safety.Mr. Tom Safranek reported on the <strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>School</strong>Improvement Grant. Introduced were Jessica Mickish, FederalPrograms Director; Rachael Eggers, YHS Administrator; Ryan Fritz,YHS Administrator; Darcy Markham, Sped Ed Dept Chair; and Raquel<strong>Yuma</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>Improvement Grant


Scott, YHS Professional Development Coach, all who have beeninstrumental with the grant. SIG is driven towards maximizing thatcritical point of contact and time when teachers and students aretogether. Grant monies are focused on job embedded professionaldevelopment, which led to partnership with International Center forLeadership in Education. A full time on-site ProfessionalDevelopment Coach has been hired. Mrs. Eggers reported that the threekey areas for every student are rigor, relevance, and relationships. Ms.Markham stated they are working on strategic planning, professionaldevelopment training on rigor, relevance, and relationship frameworkwith ICLE. Mrs. Scott shared that they have begun “unpacking” themath standards for the math departments. Freshmen teams are beingstrengthened and are a great asset to the district.Ms. Lisa Anderson, Director of Special Services, reported on how thedistrict continues to make progress in enhancing delivery of services tostudent with special needs. Information was shared on currentenrollment by school and disability with the Governing Board. Ms.Carol Carr from Achieve (formerly WORC Center) was present andspoke regarding the district collaboration with Achieve. She stated thatthere have been monumental changes occurring with the transitioningyouth. Ms. Diana Garcia, Transition Specialist, shared a video clip thatshowcased collaboration between special needs students and localbusinesses. Transition teachers Ms. Rhonda Sparks (YHS) and Ms.Stephanie Hill (CHS) spoke on their role as transition teachers.Ms. Charlene Story, Safety Committee Chair, gave an update onthe Safety Committee. The Safety Committee was founded in 2001and has proven to be one of the most valuable teams of people inthe district in terms of collaborative district-wide decision-makingregarding safety. The Committee includes representatives fromschools and district departments. The budget for the SafetyCommittee this year is $50,000 and comes from the InsuranceProceeds. The Governing Board approves the use of those fundsfor safety. The Committee meets monthly. A motion to approve the Memorandum of Agreement wasmade by Mr. Townsend and seconded by Mrs. Munk. The motionpassed unanimously.It was recommended that the Governing Board approve theproclamation recognizing February 18-25, 20<strong>12</strong>, as National FFAWeek. A motion to approve the proclamation was made by Mrs.Fernandez and seconded by Mrs. Munk.
