Without your support and <strong>en</strong>couragem<strong>en</strong>t our youngsterswould not go on to the many successes that they do. I hope you all <strong>en</strong>joy a p<strong>le</strong>asant summer andmaybe ev<strong>en</strong> some sunshine.Information for Par<strong>en</strong>tsWith the news<strong>le</strong>tter you should receive our ‘Information for Par<strong>en</strong>ts’ book<strong>le</strong>t for the next academicyear. We would be grateful if you would take the time to read it over the summer holiday inpreparation for the new academic year. P<strong>le</strong>ase <strong>en</strong>sure that you pass on any changes in your contactdetails to the school office, which will be op<strong>en</strong> over the holiday period.Prizegiving Ev<strong>en</strong>ingThis year our pres<strong>en</strong>ters at our Prizegiving Ev<strong>en</strong>ing were Mary Alger and Pat Bowers. Mary and Patare retiring from the Support Staff of the school this summer after many years’ service. A full list ofprizewinners will be included in the first news<strong>le</strong>tter of next term.Summer <strong>School</strong>sOver the holidays some of our Year 9 stud<strong>en</strong>ts will be involved in a Peak 11 summer school atSheffield Hallam University.Congratulations· Year 10 walkers who raised over £1000 (so far) for the Te<strong>en</strong>age Cancer Trust on the annua<strong>le</strong>v<strong>en</strong>ing walk around the Combs val<strong>le</strong>y. In particular, Emma Elliott from 10RB raised £140 and£184 was raised from wristbands sold to pupils in school.· Year 10 also received excell<strong>en</strong>t feedback from their work experi<strong>en</strong>ce placem<strong>en</strong>ts. Many thanks topar<strong>en</strong>ts who were ab<strong>le</strong> to host a stud<strong>en</strong>t for the two week placem<strong>en</strong>t.· All of our musicians who participated in two very successful ‘Youth Pres<strong>en</strong>ts Music’ concerts thisweek with our partner primary schools.· The cast of ‘Ernie’s Incredib<strong>le</strong> Illucinations’ who gave a stunning performance to fri<strong>en</strong>ds andfamilies earlier this month.· All those who braved the weather for our Sports Day ev<strong>en</strong>ts.Sports NewsCongratulations to:· The Year 7 and 8 rounders’ teams who won their respective <strong>High</strong> Peak tournam<strong>en</strong>ts making it ac<strong>le</strong>an sweep for the school in the 5 tournam<strong>en</strong>ts; a unique achievem<strong>en</strong>t!· Jack Andrew, J<strong>en</strong>ny Jackson and Gemma Carruthers all performed well at the Midland combinedev<strong>en</strong>ts championships in Nuneaton and Jack (3 rd ) has qualified for the English <strong>School</strong>s finals inSeptember. Jack also took part in the individual championships at Birmingham last week<strong>en</strong>d,narrowly missing the final in the hurd<strong>le</strong>s by 9 hundredths of a second! The sport appr<strong>en</strong>ticeshippupils in year 10 officiated at this championships and all featured on Sky Sport’s coverage, anexcell<strong>en</strong>t experi<strong>en</strong>ce.· The Year 7 ath<strong>le</strong>tics team finished 7 th in the Derbyshire championships and both Nico<strong>le</strong> Daltonand Frances Oakes placed in the top 15 out of 80 competitors.· The school Golf championships was played on a very wet day and the winners were MatthewMellor (Best gross) and Hannah Jones (Stab<strong>le</strong>ford). It was great that we had our first girls<strong>en</strong>tering this year… and winning!· Following his performances for the Derbyshire team, Chris Durham has be<strong>en</strong> se<strong>le</strong>cted for theMidlands squad which is the next step towards possib<strong>le</strong> national se<strong>le</strong>ction. Good luck to him atthe trials!


· Most fixtures rec<strong>en</strong>tly have be<strong>en</strong> cancel<strong>le</strong>d due to the weather but the Year 10 girls <strong>en</strong>joyed a funrounders match against the fema<strong>le</strong> staff to raise money for the minibus. It was played in excell<strong>en</strong>tspirit and the result was not important!· The trip to Wimb<strong>le</strong>don was wet but about two hours of play was se<strong>en</strong>. All <strong>en</strong>joyed a very long dayout!UniformHeadmasters’ <strong>School</strong>wear of New Mills (0663­744254), Market Street, New Mills will be op<strong>en</strong> asusual over the summer selling our uniform.FarewellsThe <strong>en</strong>d of term is always a sad occasion as some pupils and col<strong>le</strong>agues <strong>le</strong>ave us. We say goodbye toa number of staff, some temporary, who have be<strong>en</strong> with us for a relatively short whi<strong>le</strong>: Mrs Hearsum,Mrs Catterall, Miss Keates, Miss Varnouse, Ms Munnich, Mr Towns<strong>en</strong>d, Mr Martin,Mrs Featherstone, Mrs Keyes and Mrs Burgess. We also have another group who have had a largerimpact of the schooling of pupils here and are moving on to pastures new, some abroad: Mrs Moss,Mrs Ha<strong>le</strong>y, Mrs Goodall and Ms Griffiths. Five col<strong>le</strong>agues are retiring with over a c<strong>en</strong>tury of serviceto the school: Mr Batowski, Mrs Dubaic, Miss Midd<strong>le</strong>ton, Mrs Alger and Mrs Bowers. We wishthem all a great future.Year 9 SAT results <strong>2007</strong>We have rec<strong>en</strong>tly received our <strong>2007</strong> SAT results for Maths and Sci<strong>en</strong>ces from the NationalAssessm<strong>en</strong>t Authority (NAA). Having set chall<strong>en</strong>ging targets for our pupils back in 2005, I amp<strong>le</strong>ased to report that our pupils performed particularly well:­MathsSci<strong>en</strong>ce82% achieved Level 5 and above86% achieved Level 5 and aboveThe results from the English papers will not arrive in school until late <strong>August</strong>. We will issue the<strong>le</strong>vels to Year 9 par<strong>en</strong>ts early in September, with a summary in the next news<strong>le</strong>tter.P.T.A.v Summer Raff<strong>le</strong>: The raff<strong>le</strong> has raised £704 (total at print) towards the minibus appeal. Manythanks to all of you who bought tickets. Raff<strong>le</strong> winners will be published in the September<strong>News<strong>le</strong>tter</strong>.v PTA AGM: The PTA Annual G<strong>en</strong>eral Meeting will be in school on Tuesday, 9 th October at7p.m., preceded by the committee meeting in school at 6.30 p.m.v 600 Club: The draw does not take place in July and <strong>August</strong>. There are spare numbers availab<strong>le</strong> ifanyone would like one ready for the September draw – p<strong>le</strong>ase contact Ms Wy<strong>le</strong>s in the schooloffice.v Fashion Show: The PTA will be holding a Fizz Fashion Show on Monday, 1 st October in theschool hall. There is acharge of £3 for replacem<strong>en</strong>t cards.Bus passesP<strong>le</strong>ase note that new bus passes should be s<strong>en</strong>t to curr<strong>en</strong>t Years 7­10 pupils during the holiday by theCounty Council. If you wish your child to go home for lunch, p<strong>le</strong>ase <strong>en</strong>sure that he/she col<strong>le</strong>cts an application formfrom Ms Higgins and returns it. A new pass will be issued. If a pupil is not on the list he/she will notbe allowed to <strong>le</strong>ave the building as this is an issue of Health and Safety.Holiday <strong>le</strong>ave of abs<strong>en</strong>ceWe have be<strong>en</strong> disappointed by the number of requests for holidays in term time; particularly inexamination years such as Year 9 and 11. Holiday dates for <strong>2007</strong>­8 and 2008­9 have be<strong>en</strong> publishedin previous news<strong>le</strong>tters and will be in the Par<strong>en</strong>t Book<strong>le</strong>ts accompanying this news<strong>le</strong>tter. P<strong>le</strong>ase bearthis in mind as you plan your 2008 holiday.ReportsWe always welcome feedback on our reporting system. P<strong>le</strong>ase pass any observations to Ms Langford(Deputy Head).Profi<strong>le</strong>You may recall that the school governors used to publish an annual report for par<strong>en</strong>ts and held asubsequ<strong>en</strong>t meeting for interested par<strong>en</strong>ts. The governm<strong>en</strong>t has now discontinued this provision andreplaced it with an e<strong>le</strong>ctronic profi<strong>le</strong> for each school, partly compi<strong>le</strong>d by the Departm<strong>en</strong>t forEducation and Skills, partly by the school. The 2005­6 edition has now be<strong>en</strong> published on one oftheir web sites and the one for the 2006­7 academic year just <strong>en</strong>ding will probably be published in thespring of 2008. Paper copies of the docum<strong>en</strong>t can be obtained from me at school, and the e<strong>le</strong>ctronicdocum<strong>en</strong>t can be found at http://schoolprofi<strong>le</strong>.par<strong>en</strong>tc<strong>en</strong>tre.gov.ukMinibus FundraisingOur projections are that we will have raised £14,000 by the <strong>en</strong>d of term through fundraising, p<strong>le</strong>dgesand donations. We will start the new academic year without a bus as the old one will have gone backto the County Council. We still need to raise £6,000 to replace it. Any fundraising ideas would bewelcome – p<strong>le</strong>ase contact me at school.Uniform GrantsWe are p<strong>le</strong>ased to be ab<strong>le</strong> to give you details of a local charitab<strong>le</strong> organisation who have offered toassist par<strong>en</strong>ts living in the Parish of <strong>Chapel</strong>­<strong>en</strong>­<strong>le</strong>­<strong>Frith</strong>, who will find it difficult to meet the costs ofthe purchase of school uniform. Childr<strong>en</strong> fromsix of the partner primary schools <strong>en</strong>tertained par<strong>en</strong>ts and fri<strong>en</strong>ds at two concerts alongside pupilsfrom <strong>Chapel</strong>­<strong>en</strong>­<strong>le</strong>­<strong>Frith</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. All proceeds raised on behalf of the <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> werecontributed to the minibus appeal.Strawberry Moon Festival <strong>2007</strong>Well done to the pupils who performed at a rather wet Strawberry Moon Festival on 31 st June and 1 stJuly. Pupils from years 8, 9 and 10 had worked with repres<strong>en</strong>tatives from REAP (Rural EducationArts Project) to form a band and write and perform their own material. Stud<strong>en</strong>ts performed alongsidepupils from other Derbyshire schools at Tittersworth Reservoir, Leek, Staffordshire.
