Padma (Headmistress) toldMambalam Times that there isa misconception about governmentschools among the parentsand they prefer to ad-mittheir children in private schoolsin spite of exorbitant fees.She said that even thosefrom economically weakerbackgrounds borrow moneyat high interest rates to enrolltheir children in private schoolswhen they can get free educationhere. There are a numberof free schemes provided bythe Tamilnadu Government topromote education and cocurricularactivities in itsschools, most of which havebeen implemented in herschool, she said.The school was started in1962 and is the only Governmentschool for girls in T. Nagarzone. It is within walking distanceof T. Nagar bus terminus.It admits students fromStd. 6 to 10. Both Tamil andEnglish medium of instructionsare available. It has separatescience and maths labs.The library is well equippedwith more than 1000 titles.All free government benefitslike textbooks, note books,geometry box, atlas, four setsof uniforms, footwear, buspassand special incentive scholarshipfor Std. 10 students areprovided to the students. Freehygienic breakfast and lunchand purified drinking water isprovided to the students. Lastyear, the school produced 97%pass percentage in Std. 10board exams.All students are trained inbasic computer operation andtailoring. Additionally, between4 p.m to 5 p.m on school days,willing students are encouragedto purse any vocation subjectas per their interest.A free snack is also providedto such students.During summer holidays,free summer camps are conductedand the students aretrained in Yoga, spoken English,advanced tailoring andcomputers.
