<strong>and</strong> early June. Alaganik Slough <strong>and</strong> Clear Creek receive their runs from mid-June through earlyJuly. In the <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>River</strong> drainage, June <strong>and</strong> July <strong>of</strong>fer anglers the chance to catch thesemigrants in the Gulkana, Robe <strong>and</strong> Klutina rivers. According to the Alaska Department <strong>of</strong> fish<strong>and</strong> Game, the annual run <strong>of</strong> sockeye salmon returning to the Gulkana occurs from late June tomid-August. Sockeye migrate up the entire length <strong>of</strong> the Gulkana through Paxson <strong>and</strong> Summitlakes (AKDFG, 2000). These two lakes are two <strong>of</strong> the largest lakes in the Gulkana system <strong>and</strong>provide essential spawning <strong>and</strong> rearing habitat for these fish. A sockeye salmon hatcheryoperated by Prince William Sound Aquaculture releases fry into Paxson, Summit <strong>and</strong> Crosswindlakes in early summer (AKDFG, 2002). Other lakes in the area that may function as sockeyespawning grounds are Dickey Lake <strong>and</strong> Swede Lake. Tazlina Lake <strong>and</strong> Klutina Lake are bothlarge lakes at the headwaters <strong>of</strong> the Tazlina <strong>and</strong> Klutina rivers (two other important salmonspawning streams on the Upper <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>River</strong>). These lakes are likely to be the destinations forsockeye traveling up these large <strong>Copper</strong> <strong>River</strong> tributaries.The Alaska Department <strong>of</strong> Fish <strong>and</strong> Game (AKDFG) operates a sonar station at MilesLake to estimate the numbers <strong>of</strong> returning fish (escapement). The data from this station <strong>of</strong>fers agood opportunity to underst<strong>and</strong> the relative abundance <strong>of</strong> sockeye salmon. According to theAKDFG web page listing the Miles Lake sonar data, 26, 287 sockeye passed the station on June3, 2002. The yearly total for that date was given as 109,306 fish. This number will continue toincrease until the run peaks in July.Figure 12.
