BOOK FESTIVAL CARNAVON -‐ Date: October 2012
Location: Carnavon
Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon
One of the huge success stories of our festivals up to date has been the involvement of young and
old through what we term the "mass participation events". This includes numerous fun items in
which the people compete with prizes to be won. The local idols competitions as well as other items
have also in the past created huge interest and enthusiasm locally. The key word until now has been
the term "local". Local participation is great and it will increase. The distances of the Karoo, however,
has until now made it very unlikely for huge numbers of outsiders to visit our town for the festival.
Last year we held the semi-‐finals of the national ATKV riel competition here in Carnarvon. By far the
best timeslot of the festival is always on the Saturday afternoon. That is the time when the
businesses close and the staff can slip away to the festival. That primetime was handed to the ATKV
exclusively for the running of their riel semi-‐finals.
