HLC Technology(HÜCO Lamp Control)For several years HÜCO has utilised ‘HLC’ technology (HÜCO LampControl) in dimmable electronic ballasts. Due to its superior performancethis technology is also incorporated in the new generation ofMulti-Power ballasts.1. HÜCO electronic ballast with ’HLC’ techniqueThe ’HLC’ technology makes it possible that the ignition circuit isquasi switched off after ignition of the lamp. The lamp current isthen distributed to both ends of the cathode.Advantages:• Due to the distribution of the lamp current to both cathodes, thetemperature is distributed equally. In comparison to other Cutofftechnologies the thermal stress at the cathodes is lower <strong>and</strong>cathodes failures rates are minimized.• The cathode voltage drop at the lamp is reduced. The result is alower lamp current without loss of luminous flux:2. Electronic ballast with preheating cut-offIf you consider this technique, the preheating circuit is cut off afterignition of the lamp <strong>and</strong> the complete lamp current flows into oneend of the cathode. This technology is identical with the operationof a lamp at a KVG or a WG.(Wire wound)Vorteile:Simple circuit for the limitation of power loss.Nachteile:The complete lamp current is conducted by one cathode pin <strong>and</strong>therefore the cathode is heated up on one side. The ensuing thermalstress could result in failure of the cathode. The cathode voltagedrop at the lamp increases, as a consequence the efficiencyof the lamp decreases.The comparisonWe asked an independent lamp manufacturer to compare the HÜCO’HLC’ technology with an electronic ballast with preheating cut-off, inorder to have verifiable figures for these statements. In the test HÜCOMulti-Power ballast 09 7555 2x18–32 W <strong>and</strong> a comparable ballast withcut-off technology were used. The most widely used ballast type, 2x26WTC-TEL, was tested.The table below shows that the HÜCO ballast with a lamp power of 23,8W provides a luminous flux of 1754 lumen. This means in comparison:1 Watt lower lamp losses at a higher luminous flux! Or in other words: Atnearly the same luminous flux a lower lamp current of 13 mA!The effect is that the lamp is not used at such high temperatures <strong>and</strong>therefore has a longer life-span <strong>and</strong> can be used for various difficultapplications. Lifetimeof HÜCO ballastsIncrease life time of your fitting!The life time of a fitting depends on the ambient temperature, thequality of the assigned components <strong>and</strong> the design. The maximumambient temperature is governed by the application, so the technicaldesigner can affect the quality of the fitting only by careful selectionof components <strong>and</strong> a conscientious design. A critical <strong>and</strong> life timedetermining component is the electronic ballast.Just as the life time of the fitting is determined by the ballast, sothe life time of the ballast is determined by the assigned electrolyticcapacitors. Due to the expecting life time of the Elko, the life timeof the ECG will reach at least 50.000h with tc max, except for fewexceptions. Whereby the indicated value refers to a maximum failurerate of 10%, operated with tc max.For Multipower ballasts, the measurement was done with max. allowedlamp. That means, e.g. a Multipower fitting for 26-42W reachthe maximum tc point temperature with a 42W lamp <strong>and</strong> with 26Wlamp the tc point temperature is 10°C lower; then the life time for26W will be doubled.How does HÜCO realizehigh life time <strong>and</strong> reliability?Electrical concept:To resist against short- <strong>and</strong> long- term over voltage, we use more robustcomponents <strong>and</strong> an additional over voltage protection. The overvoltages on mains (Surge <strong>and</strong> Burst) are relatively well known today<strong>and</strong> converted into a normative requirement. HUECO ballasts are fullytested in accordance with the st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>and</strong> comply with the generalrequirements. Additionally HUECO ballasts except the Minipowerproduct range are resistive against over voltage, 320V for 48h <strong>and</strong>350V for 2h (e.g. neutral interruption).Mechanical concept:The insensitivity to mechanical loads such as vibrations <strong>and</strong> impacts isreached by the employment of SMD components. SMD’s do not havelong connection legs <strong>and</strong> a lower weight than discrete components.SMD’s are soldered or stuck on the printed circuit board. Electronictransformers of HUECO have additionally double sided printed circuitboards. This guarantees a further mechanical security for speciallyloaded components like terminal blocks <strong>and</strong> output transformers.Thermal concept:Application example:By a skilful luminairy construction it is possible to reduce the tcpointtemperature <strong>and</strong> the Elko temperature in such a way whichwill disburse themselves this by the rise of the life span.Is it possible as in the example to realise a temperature reductionof 10°C, the life span of the EVG will increase approximately to thedouble.Also in this point HÜCO went a clear, but not very easy way. As heataffects the life time negatively <strong>and</strong> heat is the result of power losses,the best way is to reduce the power losses on a minimum! Due toour experience of many years in the development of ballasts, wehave succeeded in reducing the power losses by more than half. Forexample a 2x 26W TC-TEL ballast has power losses of only 3,5W ata power consumption of 53W. This corresponds to an efficiency ofapprox. 93%. Further, only quality components are used <strong>and</strong> thetechnical specification of the components is never exceeded. WithHÜCO, particularly temperature-sensitive components (e.g. electrolyticcapacitors) are positioned in such a way that they have sufficientclearance from hot components such as coils.Which factors determine the life time of a EVG?The life time of a ballast will be influenced by the electrical- mechanical<strong>and</strong> thermal- stress, for example high ambient temperature, voltagepeaks on mains <strong>and</strong> vibrations.www.hueco.com 101


ElectronicTransformersConnection - Primary SideSome Hüco transformers provide a loop in loop out facility on the primaryside of the transformer, eliminating complex wiring <strong>and</strong> at thesame time reducing installation costs. Strain relief is also provided forboth cables.Connection - Secondary SideAll HÜCO transformers up to 150VA permit the connection of cablesof up to 2,5 mm 2 core cross-section <strong>and</strong> on a 210VA transformer upto a maximum of 4mm 2 . On 105VA types up to 3 lamps can be fitteddirectly to the 6-way terminal block.Dimmer operationElectronic transformers can be operated with st<strong>and</strong>ard trailing edgephase-cut dimmers but when a dimmer is used, the power consumptionof the dimmer will cause a reduction in the maximum achievablebrightness. Theelectronic protection circuit on the 210VA transformer is reset after themains supply has been interrupted for at least > 3 sec.Overtemperature ProtectionDue to low power loss, HÜCO transformers have ample temperaturereserves. Most types are automatically switched off by a reversible electronicover-temperature sensor as soon as a specified temperature isexceeded. After a short cooling-down period the transformer will automaticallyswitch on again.Ambient TemperatureHÜCO transformers operate trouble-free in a temperature range of-20°C to 50°C or °60°C. Where the Purchaser fails to fulfil its duties, including failure to make payments due,the Supplier shall be entitled to cancel the contract <strong>and</strong> take back the RetainedGoods in the case of continued failure following expiry of a reasonable time set by theSupplier; the statutory provisions that a time limit is not needed remain unaffected.The Purchaser shall be obliged to surrender the Retained Goods.IV. Time for supplies; delay1. Times set for Supplies can only be observed if all Documents to be supplied by thePurchaser, necessary permits <strong>and</strong> releases, especially concerning plans, are receivedin time <strong>and</strong> if agreed terms of payment <strong>and</strong> other obligations of the Purchaserare fulfilled. Unless these conditions are fulfilled in time, times set shall be extendedappropriately; this shall not apply where the Supplier is responsible for the delay.2. If non-observance of the times set is due to force majeure such as mobilization, war,rebellion or similar events, e. g. strike or lockout, such time shall be extendedaccordingly.3. If the Supplier is responsible for the delay (hereinafter referred to as „Delay“) <strong>and</strong>the Purchaser demonstrably suffered a loss therefrom, the Purchaser may claim acompensation as liquidated damages of 0.5 % for every completed week of Delay, butin no case more than a total of 5 % of the price of that part of the Supplies whichbecause of the Delay could not be put to the intended use.4. Purchaser’s claims for damages due to delayed Supplies as well as claims for damagesin lieu of performance exceeding the limits specified in No. 3 above shall be excludedin all cases of delayed Supplies even upon expiry of a time set to the Supplier to effectthe Supplies. This shall not apply in cases of m<strong>and</strong>atory liability based on intent, grossnegligence, or due to injury of life, body or health. Cancellation of the contract by thePurchaser based on statute shall be limited to cases where the Supplier isresponsible for the delay. The above provisions do not imply a change in the burdenof proof to the detriment of the Purchaser.5. At the Supplier’s request the Purchaser shall declare within a reasonable period oftime whether the Purchaser cancels the contract due to the delayed Supplies or insistson the Supplies to be carried out.6. If dispatch or shipment is delayed at the Purchaser’s request by more than one monthafter notice of the readiness for dispatch was given, the Purchaser may be charged, forevery month commenced, storage costs of 0.5 % of the price of the items of the Supplies,but in no case more than a total of 5 %. The parties to the contract may prove thathigher or, as the case may be, lower storage costs have been incurred.V. Transfer of risk1. Even where delivery has been agreed freight free, the risk shall pass to the Purchaseras follows:a) if the Supplies do not include assembly or erection, at the time when the Suppliesare shipped or picked up by the carrier. Upon request of the Purchaser, the Suppliershall insure the Supplies against the usual risks of transport at the expense of thePurchaser;b) if the Supplies include assembly or erection, at the day of taking over in the ownworks or, if so agreed, after a fault-free trial run.2. The risk shall pass to the Purchaser if dispatch, shipping, the start or performanceof assembly or erection, the taking over in the own works or the trial run is delayed forreasons for which the Purchaser is responsible or if the Purchaser has otherwise failedto accept the Supplies.VI. Assembly <strong>and</strong> erectionUnless otherwise agreed in writing, assembly/erection shall be subject to the followingprovisions:1. The Purchaser shall provide at its own expense <strong>and</strong> in good time:a) all earth <strong>and</strong> construction work <strong>and</strong> other ancillary work outside the scope of theSupplier, including the necessary skilled <strong>and</strong> unskilled labour, construction materials<strong>and</strong> tools,b) the equipment <strong>and</strong> materials necessary for assembly <strong>and</strong> commissioning such asscaffolds, lifting equipment <strong>and</strong> other devices as well as fuels <strong>and</strong> lubricants,c) energy <strong>and</strong> water at the point of use including connections, heating <strong>and</strong> lighting,d) suitable dry <strong>and</strong> lockable rooms of sufficient size adjacent to the site for thestorage of machine parts, apparatus, materials, tools, etc. <strong>and</strong> adequate working <strong>and</strong>recreation rooms for the erection personnel, including sanitary facilities as areappropriate in the specific circumstances. Furthermore, the Purchaser shall takeall measures it would take for the protection of its own possessions to protect thepossessions of the Supplier <strong>and</strong> of the erection personnel at the site,e) protective clothing <strong>and</strong> protective devices needed due to particular conditionsprevailing on the specific site.2. Before the erection work starts, the Purchaser shall make available of its own accordany information required concerning the location of concealed electric power, gas <strong>and</strong>water lines or of similar installations as well as the necessary structural data.3. Prior to assembly or erection, the materials <strong>and</strong> equipment necessary for the work tostart must be available on the site of assembly/erection <strong>and</strong> any preparatory workmust have advanced to such a degree that assembly/erection can be started asagreed <strong>and</strong> carried out without interruption. Access roads <strong>and</strong> the assembly/erectionsite itself must be level <strong>and</strong> clear.4. If assembly, erection or commissioning is delayed due to circumstances for which theSupplier is not responsible, the Purchaser shall bear the reasonable costs incurred foridle times <strong>and</strong> any additional travelling of the Supplier or the erection personnel.5. The Purchaser shall attest to the hours worked by the erection personnel towardsthe Supplier at weekly intervals <strong>and</strong> the Purchaser shall immediately confirm in writingif assembly, erection or commissioning has been completed.6. If, after completion, the Supplier dem<strong>and</strong>s acceptance of the Supplies, the Purchasershall comply therewith within a period of two weeks. In default thereof, acceptanceis deemed to have taken place. Acceptance is also deemed to have been effected ifthe Supplies are put to use, after completion of an agreed test phase, if any.VII. Receiving of suppliesThe Purchaser shall not refuse to receive Supplies due to minor defects.VIII. Defects as to qualityThe Supplier shall be liable for defects as to quality („Sachmängel“, hereinafter referredto as „Defects“,) as follows:1. All parts or services where a Defect becomes apparent within the limitation periodshall, at the discretion of the Supplier, be repaired, replaced or provided again freeof charge irrespective of the hours of operation elapsed, provided that the reason forthe Defect had already existed at the time when the risk passed.2. a) Claims based on Defects are subject to a limitation period of 12 months. Thiprovision shall not apply where longer periods are prescribed by law according to Sec.438 para. 1 No. 2 (buildings <strong>and</strong> things used for a building), Sec. 479 para. 1 (right ofrecourse), <strong>and</strong> Sec. 634a para. 1 No. 2 (defects of a building) German Civil Code(„BGB“), as well as in cases of injury of life, body or health, or where the Supplierintentionally or grossly negligently fails to fulfil its obligation or fraudulently concealsa Defect. The legal provisions regarding suspension of expiration („Ablaufhemmung“),suspension („Hemmung“) <strong>and</strong> recommencement of limitation periods remainunaffected.b) Extension of Period of LimitationIrrespective of any other contractually or legally stipulated warranty claims, thesupplier shall provide a warranty to the customer in deviation from § 438 Section 1No. 3. of the BGB (German Civil Code) for material defects beyond the two-yearlimitation period until expiry of the 36-month period from delivery for the freedomof the object from material defects. The supplier shall be obligated, within theextended period of limitation, to rectify the defects in, re-supply or renew all partsor perfomances that exhibit deficiencies within the extended period of limitation. Thisshall be subject to the provisions that the cause of the deficiency was already presentat the time of risk transfer <strong>and</strong> that the material defect was caused through the fault ofthe supplier. Article VIII. Nos. 3., 4. <strong>and</strong> 7. shall apply accordingly. Rectification,resupplyor renewal shall be free of charge <strong>and</strong> the decision as to which of thesemeasures or which combination of these measures is taken shall be at the discretionof the sup-plier. Further claims of the customer, in particular claims for damagesor losses, rights of withdrawal or rights to price reduction or claims under a rightof recourse of the customer are excluded within the period of the extended period oflimitation. Claims of the customer on account of the required expenses for thepurposes of subsequent performance, in particular transportation, travel <strong>and</strong> labourcosts <strong>and</strong> costs of materials are also excluded.3. The Purchaser shall notify Defects to the Supplier in writing <strong>and</strong> without unduedelay.4. In the case of notification of a Defect, the Purchaser may withhold payments to area-sonable extent taking into account the Defect occurred. The Purchaser, however,may withhold payments only if the subject-matter of the notification of the Defectoccurred is justified beyond doubt. Unjustified notifications of Defect shall entitle theSupplier to have its expenses reimbursed by the Purchaser.5. The Supplier shall first be given the opportunity to supplement its performance(„Nacherfüllung“) within a reasonable period of time.6. If supplementary performance is unsuccessful, the Purchaser shall be entitled tocancel the contract or reduce the remuneration, irrespective of any claims fordamages it may have according to Art. XI.7. There shall be no claims based on Defect in cases of insignificant deviations fromthe agreed quality, of only minor impairment of usefulness, of natural wear <strong>and</strong> tear orDamage arising after the transfer of risk from faulty or negligent h<strong>and</strong>ling, excessivestrain, unsuitable equipment, defective workmanship, inappropriate foundationsoil or from particular external influences not assumed under the contract, or fromnon-reproducible software errors. Claims based on defects attributable to impropermodifications or repair work carried out by the Purchaser or third parties <strong>and</strong> theconsequences thereof shall be likewise excluded.8. The Purchaser shall have no claim with respect to expenses incurred in the course ofsupplementary performance, including costs of travel <strong>and</strong> transport, labour, <strong>and</strong>material, to the extent that expenses are increased because the subject-matter of theSupplies was subsequently brought to another location than the Purchaser’s branchoffice, unless doing so complies with the intended use of the Supplies.9. The Purchaser’s right of recourse against the Supplier pursuant to Sec. 478 BGB islimited to cases where the Purchaser has not concluded an agreement with itscustomers exceeding the scope of the statutory provisions governing claims based onDefects. Moreover, No. 8 above shall apply mutatis mut<strong>and</strong>is to the scope of the rightof recourse the Purchaser has against the Supplier pursuant to Sec. 478 para. 2 BGB.10. Furthermore, the provisions of Art. XI (Other Claims for Damages) shall apply inrespect of claims of damages. Any other claims of the Purchaser against the Supplieror its agents or any such claims exceeding the claims provided for in this Art. VIII,based on a Defect, shall be excluded.IX. Industrial property rights <strong>and</strong> copyright; defects in title1. Unless otherwise agreed, the Supplier shall provide the Supplies free from thirdparties’ industrial property rights <strong>and</strong> copyrights (hereinafter referred to as „IPR“) withrespect to the country of the place of destination. If a third party asserts a justifiedclaim against the Purchaser based on an infringement of an IPR with respect to theSupplies made by the Supplier <strong>and</strong> then used in conformity with the contract, theSupplier shall be liable to the Purchaser within the time period stipulated in Art. VIIINo. 2 as follows:a) The Supplier shall choose whether to acquire, at its own expense, the right touse the IPR with respect to the Supplies concerned or whether to modify the Suppliessuch that they no longer infringe the IPR or replace them. If this would beunreasonable to dem<strong>and</strong> from the Supplier, the Purchaser may cancel the contract orreduce the remuneration pursuant to the appli-cable statutory provisions.b) The Supplier’s liability to pay damages shall be governed by Art. XI.c) The above obligations of the Supplier shall only apply if the Purchaser(i)immediately notifies the Supplier of any such claim asserted by the third party inwriting, (ii) does not concede the existence of an infringement <strong>and</strong> (iii) leaves anyprotective measures <strong>and</strong> settlement negotiations to the discretion of the Supplier. Ifthe Purchaser stops using the Supplies in order to reduce the damage or for othergood reason, it shall be obliged to pointout to the third party that noacknowledge ment of the alleged infringement may be inferred from the fact that theuse has been discontinued.2. Claims of the Purchaser shall be excluded if it is itself responsible for the infringementof an IPR.3. Claims of the Purchaser shall also be excluded if the infringement of the IPR is causedby specifications made by the Purchaser, to a type of use not foreseeable by theSupplier or to the Supplies being modified by the Purchaser or being used togetherwith products not provided by the Supplier.4. In addition, with respect to claims by the Purchaser pursuant to No. 1 a) above, Art. VIIINos. 4, 5, <strong>and</strong> 9 shall apply mutatis mut<strong>and</strong>is in the event of an infringement of anIPR.5. Where other defects in title occur, Art. VIII shall apply mutatis mut<strong>and</strong>is.6. Any other claims of the Purchaser against the Supplier or its agents or any suchclaims exceeding the claims provided for in this Art. IX, based on a defect in title, shallbe excluded.X. Impossibility of performance; adaption of contract1. To the extent that Supplies are impossible to be carried out, the Purchaser shall beentitled to claim damages, unless the Supplier is not responsible for the impossibility.The Purchaser’s claim for damages shall, however, be limited to an amount of 10 %of the value of the part of the Supplies which, owing to the impossibility, cannot be putto the intended use. This limitation shall not apply in the case of m<strong>and</strong>atory liabilitybased on intent, gross negligence or injury of life, body or health; this does not implya change in the burden of proof to the detriment of the Purchaser. The right of thePurchaser to cancel the contract shall remain unaffected.2. Where unforeseeable events within the meaning of Art. IV No. 2 substantially changethe economic importance or the contents of the Supplies or considerably affect theSupplier’s business, the contract shall be adapted taking into account the principlesof reasonableness <strong>and</strong> good faith. Where doing so is economically unreasonable,the Supplier shall have the right to cancel the contract. If the Supplier intends toexercise its right to cancel the contract, it shall notify the Purchaser thereof withoutundue delay after having realised the repercussions of the event; this shall also applyeven wherean extension of the delivery period had previously been agreed with thePurchaser.XI. Other claimes for damages1. Any claims for damages <strong>and</strong> reimbursement of expenses the Purchaser may have(hereinafter referred to as „Claims for Damages“), based on whatever legal reason,including infringement of duties arising in connection with the contract or tort, shall beexcluded.2. The above shall not apply in the case of m<strong>and</strong>atory liability, e. g. under the GermanProduct Liability Act („Produkthaftungsgesetz“), in the case of intent, gross negligence,injury of life, body or health, or breach of a condition which goes to the root of thecontract („wesentliche Vertragspflichten“). However, Claims for Damages arising froma breach of a condition which goes to the root of the contract shall be limited to theforeseeable damage which is intrinsic to the contract, unless caused by intent or grossnegligence or based on liability for injury of life, body or health. The above provisiondoes not imply a change in the burden of proof to the detriment of the Purchaser.3. To the extent that the Purchaser has a valid Claim for Damages according to this Art.XI, it shall be time-barred upon expiration of the limitation period applicable to Defectspursuant to Art. VIII No. 2. In the case of claims for damages under the GermanProduct Liability Act, the statutory provisions governing limitation periods shall apply.XII. Venue <strong>and</strong> applicable law1. If the Purchaser is a businessperson, sole venue for all disputes arising directly orindirectly out of the contract shall be the Supplier’s place of business. However, theSupplier may also bring an action at the Purchaser’s place of business.2. Legal relations existing in connection with this contract shall be governed by Germansubstantive law, to the exclusion of the United Nations Convention on Contracts forthe International Sale of Goods (CISG).XIII. Severability clauseThe legal invalidity of one or more provisions of this contract shall in no way affect thevalidity of the remaining provisions. This shall not apply if it would be unreasonable forone of the parties to continue the contract.XIV. Catalogue informationOnly the catalogue valid at the time of the conclusion of the contract shall apply.
