Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends,
Welcome to our first publication of LegeND!
I am so excited that we finally have a way to
communicate to all of our constituents the
amazing things happening at ND and how
alumnae, students and parents are living
out the mission of Notre Dame High School.
This publication will be available in this
format in the winter and spring.
During the first semester, several major
events happened. The 57th Fall Festival
took place on a beautiful, warm day. Seeing
so many of our alumnae and friends made
the day extra special, starting with the
Walk/Run and ending with the Fall Festival Coronation. We also enjoyed an
excellent performance of Little Women as well as a joyous music concert and
dance recital.
Before Thanksgiving, we celebrated Mass and reception with over 250 of our
ND Grandparents present. This is always an enjoyable morning for all of us.
We also welcomed back over 50 of our alumnae for a Thanksgiving Mass and
Reception.
December brought our Annual Mother and Daughter Liturgy, Breakfast and
Fashion Show. This year the event was held at Andre’s West, where mothers
and daughters had an opportunity to enjoy a Christmas boutique prior to the
liturgy.
As you peruse this issue of LegeND, the Alumnae Reunion Year classes are
invited to return to Notre Dame on March 5. Last year, my class came together
for our reunion and it was so much fun. Don’t miss it!
And finally at the end of this issue you will find a synopsis of our Annual
Report for 2009-2010 (a full version will be posted on our website at a later
date). I thank all of you who have been so generous with your time, talent and
treasures. Notre Dame could not be what it is today if it were not for each of
you and your commitment to our school. Thank you so much and may you
have a joy-filled Christmas season.

At Notre Dame, leadership is more than a quality, it is a way of life. Our state and nationally recognized NDHS STUCO
has been busy this year planning such fun events as a Geeky Beauty Pageant, Leadership Retreat, Freshman Orientation,
and Field Day. In Summer 2011, they will help plan and organize the National STARS Leadership Convention sponsored
by NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals).
In addition to STUCO, a formal Leadership Class is offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students work together
in team challenges, public speaking, service learning, character development and the building of each others self-esteem.
All members of this course plan projects for the school or community. The focus of the course is to give each student the
values and knowledge to be successful.

Did you know that several ND alums have returned to
school to coach our award winning athletic teams?
New this year are Jamie (Gabel) Voelpel ‘97, coach of the
JV Volleyball team, and Samantha Inman ‘04, the cheerleading
coach.

Notre Dame provides many opportunities where students
are challenged to integrate lifelong learning, faith
and service. Projects are organized to help with this
understanding and to deepen the experience.
We ended last school year with our graduates taking a lead
on MISSION AFRICA. ND raised $6,000 to help build a
dormitory for our sister school in Mkar, Nigeria, where the
School Sisters of Notre Dame teach. Young women in Mkar
were being assaulted walking to school. This dormitory,
which is currently being built, will allow students to live on
the property of the school and attend school in safety.
NDHS students celebrated Mission Week Mass with Fr. Patrick
Ike Nwokoye and several SSNDs who have ministered in Africa.

Our Mission is Alive and Far Reaching...
This year, the “Martha’s in Training” club has been involved
in making pillowcases for cancer survivors. In addition,
they held a Trivia Night for “Kids with Cancer”.
ND girls helped make Lemay a prettier place to live, work, and
go to school with their painting skills!
Local outreach in Lemay was done in October and
November. Students spent a Saturday raking leaves for
the elderly and disabled. A group of 10 students spent an
afternoon painting the house of an elderly woman who was
facing surgery.

ND alumna Jenny Gaynor ‘93 is a
nationally recognized glass artist. Her
company, Jenny Gaynor Glass, is
quickly becoming a household name.
Her ethereal jewelry has been spotted
on Hollywood celebrities such as
Kendra Wilkinson, Lacey Chabert and
Jenna Fisher. Her memory photo vases
were recently featured on the Today
Show, Fox AM News in St. Louis, and
several national publications such as
Lucky, In Style Weddings, Us Weekly,
OK! and Family Circle. Jenny recently
received an award from the New York
International Gift Fair for “Most Innovative”
in the sustainability category
for her recycled glass memory vases.
This is a huge honor as it is the largest
gift show in the country and tens of
thousands of exhibitors are competing
for that honor.
How do you feel ND contributed to
your success?
More than anything, the friends I made
at ND have helped me in so many
ND

parts of my life over the years. We are
all still very close and one is even the
vice president of my company! I am
lucky to have a small group of friends
in Los Angeles from ND. Even though
we all graduated at different times, out
here, we are like family. Taking Womens
Studies and going to an all-girl
school during such a critical developmental
time helped me believe that I
could achieve anything I desired.
Is there any one faculty member that
made a significant impact on you?
Mr. Gaynor, of course! I have such fond
memories of so many of my teachers
from ND. Ms. Vivod really allowed me
to think outside the box in the art department.
One of my favorite projects
was a crazy looking jacket that I sewed
in Ms. Giamanco’s class and batiked
with the help of Ms. Vivod. They were
both so supportive of creativity and
were flexible in letting me earn credit
with these projects, even though they
weren’t necessarily part of the curriculum.

Where did you attend college and
what degree did you earn?
I went to Loyola in New Orleans and
earned a degree in Psychology. It was
in New Orleans that I took my first class

in glassblowing at Tulane. I went on to
get my Master’s in Art Therapy Counseling
at Southern Illinois University-
Edwardsville. SIUE had a great glass
department, which was one of the reasons
I chose that particular school for
my Masters studies. After graduate
school, I spent a few summers in Murano,
Italy studying glassblowing and
lampworking.
How did you end up where you are
today?
After graduate school I went back to
New Orleans to do production glassblowing
for a studio there. I also taught
and worked production at Third Degree
Glass Factory when they first opened
in St. Louis. Originally, I was working
as an art therapist and just blowing
glass for fun. However, when I moved
to Los Angeles in 2005, I started a line
of glass jewelry and vases. After just a
year, I had to quit my “day job” because
I was so busy with glass orders. Now,
my business continues to grow and it is
really fun and exciting to come up with
new designs.
What words of wisdom do you have
for ND students/alums?
Well, my dad always told me to figure
out what you love to do and then figure
out how to make a living doing it.
He must’ve read the works of Albert
Schweitzer before I was even born, because
he seems to share his philosophy,
which is “Success is not the key
to happiness. Happiness is the key to
success.”

on some new duties that will be very

from United States Sugar Corporation
in an effort to begin Everglades
restoration.

Reunion Weekend
ATTENTION!
Classes of 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991,
1996, 2001, and 2006.
This year’s Reunion Weekend will be held Saturday, March 5, 2011. If your class is interested
in participating in this great event, please contact Katie at 314-544-1015 ext. 1104. We are
still in need of class representatives from the Classes of 1956, 1976, 1981, 1991,
and 1996.
The evening will begin with a Mass in the Motherhouse Chapel with all the reunion classes.
After Mass, the classes will go to their designated classroom to celebrate the rest of the night
with dinner and drinks. Current ND students will be available to provide school tours and a
class picture will be taken. An invitation with more information will follow. The classes of 1941
and 1946 will be celebrating their reunions at the Alum Mass and Lunch on May 15, 2011.
