A Notre Dame Legend Retires
Mary Bequette leaves ND after 33 years.
If you are an alumna from any class after 1977, you fear no moral
dilemma. Most likely, that is because you took Morality Class
from Ms. Mary Bequette, who no doubt equipped you with all the
tools she knew you would need to make good choices. If it wasn’t
Morality, then perhaps you took Old Testament or Social Justice
class from her. Whichever course it was, you were among a very
blessed group of students who had the privilege of having Ms.
Bequette as a teacher.
Mary has been teaching since 1965. Early in her career, Mary
taught at St. Dominic Savio, Rosary (Trinity), Quincy Notre Dame
and Rosati-Kain. In 1977, she began teaching at
Notre Dame and has been here ever since.
Why did she stay here so long? “I loved the
schedule, loved my colleagues and most of all I
loved the students. You were real.”
After 33 years of teaching religion at Notre Dame,
Mary Bequette has decided to retire. Mary plans
on using her time off to read, garden, care for
her home and family, and do volunteer work
with women or children. While the Notre Dame
community is overjoyed for her, we will miss her
greatly.
Mary leaves us with these loving words:
“Years ago, my ‘practically perfect’ mom reflected on her years as a parent to six and said that
she wished she had been kinder. At times, I share that same thought. However, I know my
passion was to help you grow in your gifts, to read with insight, to write clearly, and to think
and reflect in-depth. I hope those skills continue to build on your journey of lifelong learning.
Each of you is a beloved child of God and I feel deeply privileged to have been your teacher. To
each of you, I am more grateful than you possibly can know.”
I think I speak for all Notre Dame students, past and present when I say that the feeling is
mutual. You have inspired and empowered us. We love you and will miss you, Ms. Bequette!
MEGAN’S STORY
‘03 Alumna overcomes debilitating
disorder to acheive her life dream.
When you first meet ND alumna
Megan O’Neill,‘03 you would never
know that she has any difficulty
seeing or hearing. She looks directly
at you when in conversation and her
speech is perfect. But after spending some time with
her, you may notice that her eyes are more dilated than
they should be, or that she often holds onto someone’s
arm when walking in an unfamiliar place. She has to
concentrate to read others lips in order to understand
everything they are saying when any other noises
are introduced into her environment. That is because
Megan has Usher Syndrome, a disorder that causes both
deafness and blindness.
When Megan was three years old, doctors confirmed
that she was moderately deaf, with a hearing loss of
about 80%. She was quickly enrolled in the Central
Institute of the Deaf to learn how to read lips and speak
articulately with the help of her new hearing aids. She
advanced quickly in the program and mainstreamed into
elementary school by the time she was five. Throughout
her years in grade school and at Notre Dame, Megan
lived a very typical life. She did well in school, played
living in Texas since 1993 with her
husband Rafael. They have 8 children
50th wedding anniversary in October
Marilyn (Schaper) Angeli and her
husband Bart would like to announce
the birth of their ninth child, Mary
Constance Lucia, born January 5, 2010.
She was welcomed and is loved by her
three brothers Matthew (22), Isaiah
sisters Mary(19), Ruth (17), Theresa
(12), Mary Grace (7), and Regina (3).
sports, socialized easily, got her driver’s license, and
applied to college. Having decided at age nine that she
wanted to be an architect, Megan enrolled in the School of
Architecture at the University of Kansas in 2006.
It was then that Megan began to notice some problems
with her vision. After some close calls while driving
she decided to see an eye doctor. At that time she was
diagnosed with Usher Syndrome. She was already
considered legally blind and would continue to lose her
remaining vision until she was completely blind. Megan
was startled to learn how much of her vision was already
gone, and devastated by the knowledge that she would one
day no longer see at all.
Megan transferred to Washington University in
St. Louis to be near family and friends in the fall of
2007, where she continued her studies in architecture.
Washington University agreed to take on the challenges
Megan presented as a student with low vision. Unable
to work at a drafting table by her senior year due to the
very small field of remaining vision, Megan‘s professors
modified her requirements to suit her obvious talents
with her abilities. With the encouragement of the WashU
staff and her wonderful advisor, Liane Hancock, Megan
concentrated her research on the standards of accessibility
to buildings for the handicapped to include those who
are challenged with low vision and hearing impairments,
concerns often overlooked in design by architects.
Megan graduated in May 2010 with a BA in
Kevin McDaniel on June 5, 2009 at St.
George Church in Affton
Architecture. In her final year of undergraduate
work she produced extensive research findings
concerning accessibility. Her work was so admirable
that Washington University is preparing to put it on
an exhibition in September 2010. Megan was also
offered an internship with one of the largest and most
prestigious architecture firms in St. Louis, Hellmuth,
Obatta, & Kassabaum. She has been invited to
return to WashU to work another internship with the
disabilities department. She is currently deciding
which Master’s program to pursue.
Her decision to continue to pursue her career
as an architect has been paradoxical. Her love of
architecture brings her joy and accomplishment, as
well as an inherent fear of the unknown, uncharted
territory. However, Megan has never given up, never
shown signs of self pity and has steadfastly refused
to let her diagnosis take away her joy for life, love
and family. In 2008, she and her mother, Theresa
Bettlach-Cacciatore, began the Usher Syndrome
Foundation to raise funds for research in hopes of
finding a cure for this disorder. With the help of many
family members and friends, some who are graduates
of Notre Dame High School (Suzy Summers Ceriotti
and Lisa Schirmer Berra), they plan to continue their
efforts until an answer is found. For more information
Notre Dame Alumnae Make the Difference
The Alumnae highlighted in this edition of the Alum Newsletter are the 2010 Distinguished Alumnae and Young Alumnae Award Recipients. These ladies
were honored at the Alumnae Mass and Lunch in April. See page 7 for information on how to nominate an alumna for the 2011 Awards.
Joan Spindler Barthel ‘50
Distinguished Alumna Award Recipient
After graduating from Notre Dame High School,
Joan attended St. Louis University where she
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in
English and minor in Writing. Right after college,
she moved to New York and worked as a news
assistant for the New York Times. When she quit to
do freelance writing, the Times quickly discovered
she could do more than fetch coffee and type! They
hired her to write articles for the paper. Her first piece was an article on a
woman who had just started a cooking show. Her name... Julia Child! Joan
was then hired by Life magazine and worked there as a staff writer. When
Life folded, she went back to freelancing and has since written several books
including: “A Death in Canaan” and “A Death in California,” both made into
TV movies. She also wrote “Love or Honor” and “Girl Singer”.
In the early 90’s, Oprah Winfrey asked her to write her biography but
just before it was published, Oprah changed her mind. While it was a
disappointment at the time, Joan used it as an opportunity to write a book
she had wanted to write for many years, a biography of Elizabeth Seton, the
first American-born saint in the Catholic Church. Joan is now writing a book
about her entitled “Secret Soul”.
It goes without saying that Joan is truly an accomplished author. And while
her career is most impressive, it is her spirit that is truly inspirational. As
best said by her classmates when they nominated her for this award, “Notre
Dame can take much pride in Joan and her numerous accomplishments - she
has always had the true ND spirit of faith in God, and devotion to family and
Millie Sneed Steffe ‘ 61
Distinguished Alumna Award Recipient
When Millie graduated from ND, she started working
for the U.S. Army as a technical writer and eventually
worked in Human Resources. In 1975, she and her
husband started a delivery business and ran it for over
30 years. In 2005 they closed the business, but they
still have a small trucking company called, American
Parcel Sort, Inc. and Millie is the CEO. Although
Mille clearly found success as an entrepreneur, she is a Notre Dame girl
through and through…possessing a passion for lifelong learning. She went
back to school attending Meramec Community College part-time for close
to 8 years. She enjoyed her classes and earned her Associates Degree.
Somewhere between running a business and raising a family, Millie has
managed to volunteer for countless organizations including Notre Dame.
She served on the Alumnae Advisory Board and later as President of the
Alumnae Association where she helped develop the Annual Auction and the
Golf Tournament. She has planned nearly every class reunion and has gone
on to parish work as president of the Most Sacred Heart Women’s Club and
Parish Council. She is also very involved in the civic community having
held executive positions in the Eureka Arts Council, the Eureka Historical
Society, the St. Louis Sail and Power Squadron and the RotaryAnne’s.
She is on the St. Louis University Hospital Auxiliary Board, first as
Communication Specialist and now as Co-President.
Four years ago, Millie was diagnosed with breast cancer. While undergoing
surgery and radiation, she, in true Millie spirit, organized and hosted support
groups for others she met at the Cancer Center, inviting guest speakers to
inform and inspire, and never left the side of those who eventually passed
away. Millie’s ongoing love of learning and her tireless service to the
community are wonderful examples to sudents and alums of how to live the
mission of Notre Dame.
Jennifer Wofford Gruszka ‘99
Young Alumna Award Recipient
Even as a child, Jennifer knew that she wanted to
be a nurse. When she was just 7 years old, she
was hospitalized for a tumor. She was so touched
and inspired by the nurses that took care of her
during her hospitalization and recovery that she
knew right then and there she wanted to do that
for others.
After graduating from Notre Dame High School, Jennifer attended St.
Louis University where she received her BSN. She went to graduate
school at the University of Missouri - St. Louis where she earned her
MSN. After graduating from nursing school, Jennifer began working
at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in the hematology oncology
department. She worked there for 4 years before transferring to the
Emergency Department where she worked while she attended graduate
school. Upon receiving her master’s degree, she became a pediatric
nurse practitioner and is currently working at Children’s Hospital as a
Hematology/Oncology pediatric nurse practitioner, specializing in Phase
1 Studies and Hemophilia. Jennifer has also served as a nurse clinical
instructor at Maryville University.
I asked Jennifer how she finds the strength to work with sick children day
after day. She said, “It is always hard to see a sick child, especially one
that has a chronic illness who might never get better. Remembering that
I am in a unique position to be able to help these patients and families
through such a difficult time provides me with comfort. I may not always
be able to physically make a child better, but I can help make them
emotionally well, and hopefully make the situation a little better. For
all the times I have to deliver bad news, I also get to deliver good news,
telling a child they are in remission, telling a family that they get to go
home for a holiday or telling a family that their radiology scans look
clear. To be able to see a child celebrate a birthday, get their wish to go to
Disney World to meet a princess...all of these overshadow the challenges
or moments of sadness.” Jennifer is a Notre Dame alumna who is truly
making a difference.
Beth Huggins ‘05
Young Alumna Award Recipient
After graduating from Notre Dame High School,
Beth attended and graduated from Mount Mary
College with a BA in Art Therapy and Theology.
Her journey of service began while still in high
school. Following a week of volunteer work at
Whole Kids Outreach in Ellington, MO while
she was a junior at NDHS, Beth spent the next
two summers working as the arts and crafts director for summer day camp.
When she arrived at Mount Mary, she worked in the Campus Ministry
Department and as an intern in the SSND Office of Global Justice & Peace
in Elm Grove, WI. During her final two years of college, she worked as a
youth retreat director at TYME OUT Youth Center outside of Milwaukee,
where she planned and led groups of youth through programs in faith,
leadership, social justice, healthy relationships, etc.
Beth is currently living in Honduras, Central America as a volunteer. She
lives in a retreat center with girls who are from outlying areas but live on
the property while they are in the high school (Instituto Notre Dame or the
NDHS of Honduras!!). There, Beth is available to help them with whatever
they need. She also assists with anything that is needed with the retreat and
mission groups that come to stay. During the day, she volunteers in a home
where currently 35 children live because they either do not have families or
their families cannot support them. She also works with Global Partners:
Running Waters, Inc.
In Beth’s acceptance speech, she quoted Marianne Williamson saying, “As
we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission
to do the same.” In reflecting on her mission in Honduras she shared
what those words mean to her. “I am here, living out a dream of mine and
sharing who I am with others. By doing so, I know that others are able to
start thinking of what that might mean in their lives.” It has only been 5
years since Beth was a student at Notre Dame. In that short time she has
changed the lives of countless numbers of people by dedicating her life to
serving others.
Oh What a Night! On March 6, 2010, over 200 Alumnae returned to Notre Dame
to celebrate their class reunions ND style. A Mass was held in the Motherhouse
chapel and then each class headed off to their own private room to celebrate. The
ladies enjoyed a catered dinner, cocktails, class photos and tours of the school
led by current students. This has been the third year for the Reunion Evening
program and it continues to grow each year. Notre Dame handles most of the
planning, so all you have to do is show up and enjoy! The 2011 Reunion Evening
will be held March 5, 2011. This year’s reunion classes are 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961,
interested in being your reunion class representative.
President’s Letter
Dear Alumnae of Notre Dame,
I hope that all of you are enjoying the summer
and finding time for a little rest and relaxation.
At ND, we are busy getting ready for the next
school year—it won’t be long before we hear the
Sister Gail Guelker
welcome voices of our young ladies. The 2009-2010
school year was filled with many exciting events and activities and it was
great to see so many of you.
January -The 75th Anniversary Prayer Service and Reception
held in the Motherhouse Chapel was filled with music and dance. This
event was a way to say thank you to the stakeholders in our community
who have supported us over the years. A special thanks to our alumnae
on the Planning Committee—Nancy Ronshausen ‘78, JoEllyn Hoffmann
‘60, S. Jan Berberich ‘67, Susan Preis ‘73, Anna DeMerit ‘68.
February - The 2010 ND Soiree, “Rebels With A Cause” Auction
at Orlando Gardens. It was a wonderful night and this year many of you
joined us for the fun.
March - The month started with the Alumnae Reunion Weekend
where over 200 alums gathered for Mass and Dinner at ND. March 20th
was the Annual Easter Egg Hunt—it was so great to see alums and their
children enjoy the day, the petting zoo, the games and the hunt. March
26th was the night for Meet Me In St. Louis – this year’s ND musical.
The wine and cheese reception brought alumnae together prior to
enjoying the ND Play.
April - Alums came together for the annual Mass and Lunch to
reconnect with one another and honor the 2010 Distinguished and Young
Alumnae Award winners. Alumnae from the classes of 1945 and 1950
celebrated their reunions at this event.
May-June - The end of May and beginning of June brought
alums together to support the ND Rebel Soccer Team. We congratulate
the team on winning 2nd place in STATE.
At the Alum Induction Ceremony for the graduates, as we present
alumnae pins, we say, “You are a Notre Dame Lady Forever”. It reminds
me of what a blessing it has been to receive a Notre Dame education and
how proud I am to have graduated from ND. As I meet more alumnae,
there is that spirit that brought me to ND as a freshmen. As the years
have gone on, I thank God for the gifts that were instilled in me - the love
of learning, the practice of faith and service to others. Thanks to all of
you for the ways you continue to carry the ND spirit forward.
2010 NDHS COOKBOOK
Do you make a mean lasagna? Perhaps people are always complimenting
you on your apple pie? If so, share your favorite recipe with the ND
community in the 2010 ND Cookbook. The cookbooks will be sold
and the profit will benefit NDHS students. To submit a recipe, visit our
We look forward to a great 2010-2011school year and hope that you will be a vital part of educating young women in the Notre Dame tradition.
ND Alums can take pride in 100% of the Class of 2010 who enrolled in colleges this Fall with 67% of the class receiving scholarships totally $4.5
million to a university of their choice. We wish them our best and continued support as they become part of our vibrant alumnae.
Our 2010 award winning faculty: Carol Marinaro, Ann Bolzenius and Bev Miller (Giamanco) continue to bring our students new opportunities for
growth. Ms. Bolzenius now is a contributing member of the National Board of Student Councils. Mrs. Miller, as recipient of the Emerson Gold
Star Grant, will offer seniors in the Child and Family Development course some exciting family heritage activities using new mobile web-based
technology.
S. Michelle Emmerich
Our award winning student body increased their global awareness with action on behalf of the women and children in Haiti and Mkar, Nigeria.
Students working with Campus Minister Liz Miller and other ND teacher leaders raised almost $10,000. collectively in the past school year for a
desperate recovery situation in Haiti and to help build a dorm building in Nigeria to provide shelter for young Nigerian girls attending a Notre Dame Secondary School. The
dorm building also protects these young women from assault and other dangers and thus enables them to concentrate on learning and completing a secondary education. Notre
Dame women, standing in solidarity with other women around the world, gives them a ‘fighting chance” for hope!
ND is also blessed to have received a $34,000 technology grant for the 2010-2011 school year which enables us to complete the installation of interactive whiteboards
(Prometheans) in most classrooms on the campus. Teachers have received an introductory training session in May 2010 and will be integrating interactive whiteboard activities
into teaching and learning at ND. Other professional development for technology integration will continue throughout the school year. We encourage you to visit Notre Dame
in 2010-2011 and to become actively involved in your school. We value your contribution of time, talent and treasure as we continue to educate young women in the
Notre Dame tradition. You make a difference!
