T
he New Forest, one of Britain’s newer National
Parks, was set aside as a royal hunting area by
William the Conqueror in 1079. It is a precious
place of great natural beauty, and a unique way to explore
it is on these open-top bus tours.
You get grandstand views as the bus takes you through
the heart of this magnificent heath and forest landscape.
You can hop on and off where you like and catch another
bus later on, or switch between tours,
all on the same ticket.
But of course, it’s the wide
open landscape with vistas fading
towards the horizon, the dense
woodland with its ancient oaks and
beeches, the wealth of flora and
fauna, that is the indefinable magic
of the New Forest.
Tours run every day - dates are on the
timetables on the other side - and if
you’ve got a cycle with you, you can put
it inside the bus, then set off on some
fantastic cycle rides at various points.
They’re all shown in the guide you’ll be
given when you get on board, along with
a wealth of information about places to
hop off along the way and discounts at many
attractions, shops and cafés.
There’s an informative commentary to add to your
enjoyment, and you’ll see far more than
you ever could in a car, and fewer cars
in the Park has to be better for everyone.
Whichever tour you choose, it’s a great way to really
experience the New Forest.
Lyndhurst is the capital of the Forest. Both tours call here, and
the village has cafés, restaurants and teashops, not to mention
interesting galleries and craft shops.
green route
If you’re coming by train join at Brockenhurst - there are
good connections from Bournemouth, Southampton,
London and the Midlands.
You’ll like Lymington’s elegant Georgian buildings,
interesting shops and cobbled quay. The town has
a great atmosphere with a distinct nautical tilt.
The bus also stops at the National Motor Museum,
where you can visit Bond In Motion the world’s largest
official collection of original James Bond vehicles. And
look at Palace House, home to the Montagu family
since 1538, and the ruins of Beaulieu Abbey.
Or there’s Exbury Gardens, a riot of
colour in summer when the Sundial
Garden and herbaceous borders are
at their best. When you pay your
admission, show your New Forest Tour
ticket and get a free ride on the
Gardens Steam Railway - great fun!
red route
This route takes you through Burley, a traditional
New Forest village full of character, once
the haunt of smugglers and highwaymen.
Then it’s onto Ringwood, a market town
with a lively Wednesday morning street market.
At Liberty's Owl, Raptor & Reptile Centre, you’ll see
magnificent birds of prey, flying displays, plus snakes,
lizards and much more besides. Beer has been brewed
in Ringwood for centuries. The modern Ringwood
Brewery nearby was founded by Peter Austin
in 1978, and produces very fine local beers.
The bus passes through Fordingbridge so
you can explore this attractive town.
Sandy Balls is an environmentallyfriendly
resort in the heart of the Forest,
where you can enjoy woodland walks
down to the River Avon and the
excellent pub and restaurant on-site.
Buy organic produce at the Farmers' Market,
which sells the best of the region's locally
produced food and drink.
