Fees for camps listed in this brochurevary due to paid staff salaries, transportation costs, food service, camp locations,and program fees for special instructors and/or equipment. Resident camp costsare higher due to the overnight and extended program experience. A campt-shirt is included in the camp fee (except for family camp). Resident camp feesalso include meals, transportation (unless noted), and a camp patch and photo.FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEFinancial assistance to help cover the camp fees (maximum <strong>of</strong> 80%) is available forgirls who live within the <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>California</strong> Council area. To apply forfinancial assistance, refer to the instructions on page 28. For questions about financialassistance, contact okerkula@girlscoutsnorcal.org or call 800-447-4475, ext. 6012.CAMP STAFFStaff members are enthusiastic, talented, and caring individuals who are selectedon the basis <strong>of</strong> their skills, experience, ability to serve as role models, andtheir genuine desire to work with children. We select staff members who arecommitted to creating a caring and supportive environment that respects eachchild as an individual and allows them to feel good about who they are. Thehealth and safety <strong>of</strong> the campers is always their first priority. Staff membersmust be at least 18 years old to work directly with the campers. Backgroundchecks are completed on all staff. The average ratio <strong>of</strong> staff to campers is 1:8.In some specialty programs, the ratio may be one to four. Staff members arerecruited from colleges and universities nationwide, local community agencies,<strong>Girl</strong> Scout referrals, and international cultural exchange organizations. All staffmembers receive training prior to supervising campers. This includes activityprogramming, safety, team building, caring for campers, meeting their needs,and much more. Staff members who supervise high adventure activities arerequired to have additional training and qualifications.HEALTH AND SAFETYAll camps must meet established standards for health and safety, sitemaintenance, program and personnel, which are set by state and localgovernments and <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>of</strong> the USA. In addition, all camps have a qualifiedHealth Supervisor on site. A doctor, or emergency services, is on-call if illnessor injury requires medical attention. Parents will be notified in the event <strong>of</strong> anemergency. Refer to the “For Parents” section <strong>of</strong> the camprocks.org website foradditional information on health management practices in our camps. <strong>Camp</strong>ersare also covered by supplemental health and accident insurance. The insurancecost is included in the camp fee.CAMP ACCREDITATIONAll Council Run camps are accredited by the American<strong>Camp</strong> Association (ACA). ACA is a national organization thatsets high standards for the health and safety <strong>of</strong> campersand staff and for the delivery <strong>of</strong> quality programs.GIRLS WITH SPECIAL NEEDSIf your daughter has medical or other special needs and can function with a1:6 adult-to-camper ratio, we encourage you to work with the <strong>Camp</strong> Registrarsto find her the most appropriate camp program. Bothin and <strong>Camp</strong> Metro areespecially adaptable for campers with special physical needs. esident campTake Your Summer Adventure to the Next Level!the fun, the friendships, the adventure, the self-discovery — it’s all here at our Council Runresident camps in northern <strong>California</strong>. bothin, deer lake, skylark Ranch, and sugar Pineeach <strong>of</strong>fer unique and exciting summer programs for all interests. Our camps are open to allgirls ages 5-17. sugar Pine, deer lake, and bothin also <strong>of</strong>fer family camp programs. Overnightsessions for girl programs range from 4-13 days. the ratio <strong>of</strong> unit staff to campers is 1:6 for 5-8year olds and 1:8 for all other camper groups.BENEFITS OF RESIDENT CAMPThe benefits <strong>of</strong> a resident camp experience come from the extended time thatgirls participate in their program. It is a wonderful way for girls to increasetheir self-reliance and independent living skills by living away from home. <strong>Girl</strong>salso enhance their socialization skills as they live and interact with girls fromall over <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>California</strong>. The extended time at resident camp also allowsfor enhanced skill development in activities. With positive, adult role modelsand a friendly, supportive environment, girls can have a truly enriching summerexperience.THE CAMP PROGRAMAt our resident camps, girls live in a unit with an average <strong>of</strong> 12–24 othercampers who have registered for the same program. The unit participates as agroup in activities throughout the session. Unit programs range from a sampling<strong>of</strong> camp activities, such as in our Sea Stars program at Skylark Ranch, tospecialty units such as horseback riding, surfing, or rock climbing. Every unitprogram, regardless <strong>of</strong> the focus, includes a variety <strong>of</strong> general camp activitiessuch as outdoor cooking, arts and crafts, songs, stargazing, hiking or swimming.General activities available vary with each camp. <strong>Camp</strong>fires, theme meals, talentshows, carnivals, and other all-camp events that bring everyone together willbe held throughout the session. NOTE: <strong>Girl</strong>s in K-3rd grade or 2nd-4th gradeprograms do not participate in archery or high ropes/climbing activities. Thisapplies to family camp as well. Deer Lake, our High Sierra camp, <strong>of</strong>fers girls“Adventure By Choice.” While campers still register for a unit program, part<strong>of</strong> their afternoons will be spent in individual choice activities. <strong>Girl</strong>s makeindependent decisions about what they want to do at camp. This is the nextstep in the resident camp experience which provides an opportunity for campersto design a unique and personal adventure like no other!A TYPICAL DAY AT CAMPThe daily schedule for each camp will vary according to the unit activitiesplanned. Most days begin with waking up around 7 a.m., followed by breakfastat 8 a.m. Lunch is served at midday and dinner is at 6 p.m. Program activitiesoccur in the morning, afternoon, and early evening. “Lights out” for campersvaries according to age but is usually between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.SLEEPING ACCOMMODATIONS AT RESIDENT CAMPSSleeping arrangements vary by camp, program, and living unit assigned.Arrangements may include cabins, dormitories, or large canvas platform tents allwith cots or bunks, or tree beds/hammocks, or tipis, dome tents, or sleepingright under the stars, all on mattresses. Refer to each camp description for alist <strong>of</strong> accommodations at that site or contact happycamper@girlscoutsnorcal.org.FOOD SERVICE AND SPECIAL DIETSMeals at resident camp are served family or buffet style. Salad and sidebars areprovided, and light snacks are available in the afternoon. A vegetarian optionis provided at every meal. Some food allergies, such as gluten-free and lactoseintolerance, may require the family to provide specialty food items. Severe foodallergies may not be able to be accommodated. For food-related questions, emailhappycamper@girlscoutsnorcal.org.HEALTH EXAMSAll campers attending resident camp must have had a physical by a LicensedPhysician, Physician’s Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner acting under the supervision<strong>of</strong> a Licensed Physician, within 12 months <strong>of</strong> their camp session. A health formwill be supplied in the electronic camper packet to use for pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> healthexam. Health forms must be submitted during the check-in process on the firstday <strong>of</strong> each camp session.6

Teamswill navigate a course <strong>of</strong> challenges in and out <strong>of</strong> camp where skill, knowledge, and teamworkget you ahead. Use different types <strong>of</strong> transportation and solve clues, riddles, puzzles andcomplete physical challenges to get to the next stop in the race. Will you be the masterarcher, the swimming champ, the camp song star? One <strong>of</strong> your races will take you across theGolden Gate Bridge, then you will come back to camp and explore Bothin’s own Golden GateBridge on our ropes course!Rustic RetreatGrades 6 – 9 Sessions 3, 6 Fee $505Come enjoy all that Bothin has to <strong>of</strong>fer in your very own summer getaway! Climb to the top<strong>of</strong> the Adventure Course, express your self in the art barn, aim for the bulls-eye in archery,and hike the skyline trail to take in the breathtaking view <strong>of</strong> the Bay.
