NHTIAlumni NewsSpring 2010Crazy About Cars! From Hobby to Career at AutoInsane.comAs Zane Merva describes it, “I justbarely made it through my studiesat NHTI. I don’t think any of myprofessors would describe me as the mostattentive student!” He graduated in 2004with a degree in Computer InformationSystems but the road to that finishingpoint was anything but smooth.Unsure of his career aspirations, Zanebegan taking classes at NHTI in 1999.Originally pursuing a degree in ElectronicEngineering Technology, he switched toComputer Information Systems in order tobroaden his job prospects. In addition totaking classes, Zane was working full-timeand pursuing his passion: cars. His love of cars began very early inlife. Growing up, his mom drove a PontiacFirebird and when Zane was just 2 yearsold, his father bought a Corvette. After adecade of riding in family station wagons,Zane learned to drive on his father’snewest addition: a Chevrolet Camaro Z28.“He let me behind the wheel and I washooked,” Zane recalls.Being a car junky, Zane was constantlyreading magazines and blogs devoted tocovering the automotive industry. In 2000,Zane and his brother, Josh, jumped intoInside this issue . . .Bo Burnham............................ 2Alumni Updates...................... 3A Grand Opening................... 4Courtney Ordway................... 7NHTI Alumni Shine............... 8Classes at BTC......................... 9Zane J. This first forayinto web-based automobile review helpedZane learn what worked in terms of onlinereview versus print media such as Car andDriver Magazine. After graduating from NHTI in 2004,he went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree inmanagement from Keene State College. In 2006, Zane and Josh co-foundedtheir next web-based company calledAutoInsane.com, billed as “reviews andnews for the certified car nut.” AutoInsane.com offers reviews of new automobiles, news, other interesting industry topics, and automotive photography. Zanesays his ultimate goal is to bring artistryback into the review and road testingof new automobiles. As the ExecutiveOf the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Zane says“Never in my dreams did I imagine that Iwould test drive a car that costs nearly fourtimes as much as my house!”

Editor, Zane test drives and reviews carsevery week. “It’s like Christmas everyFriday when a new car arrives,” he says.He has driven over 200 new cars in thelast five years. His current ride is a 2010Volkswagon GTI.Both Zane and Josh are members ofthe New England Motor Press Association.Zane travels to car shows across the U.S.Website advertising generates enoughrevenue to employ both brothers full-time.Join us for Bo BurnhamFriday April 23rd - Only $10 for NHTI Alumni!Zane stands next to a 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10, in front of his office building in Henniker. If He Knew Then…Armed with knowledge andexperience of the real world, Zane reflectsback on his time at NHTI. “Well, I wouldhave tried harder, studied more andlistened a whole lot more while in class!”Running AutoInsane.com has taughtZane that it’s “a whole new game when youdon’t have a parent, teacher or boss givingyou deadlines or telling you what to focuson first. My biggest challenge is figuringout how to prioritize the endless stream ofpotential projects and tasks that come myway on a daily basis.”Despite the challenges, Zane knowsthat being able to choose his own scheduleis the most rewarding aspect of being hisown boss. He spends his free time with hiswife, Kate, a third-grade teacher who alsoenjoys cars. He also likes to hike and skiand his talent for photography is evident inthe pictures of the various cars featured onhis website. With determination, resilience andsmarts, Zane was able to turn his passionfor cars into a solid career.Three years ago, Bo Burnham was just another high-schooler recordingYouTube videos for fun. Today, Burnham has burst on the comedy scene witha full-length LP, a Comedy Central special, and a deal to write a film for JuddApatow. About Grappone HallThe new Beverly D. Grappone Hall at NHTI, Concord’s CommunityCollege was built in response to the critical shortage of nurses in NewHampshire. Grappone Hall enables NHTI to enhance its very successfulnursing programs and meet the needs of its growing population ofstudents. The 30,500 square foot building includes classrooms, faculty offices,an auditorium, computer lab, nurse’s station and clinical resource center. It is a $6.5 million building, the result of the first-ever capital campaign,“Building Our Future, Caring For Yours” undertaken by NHTI. Thecampaign was a public-private partnership, involving $2 million raisedfrom over 500 private donors, a $500,000 federal grant and $4 million inState capital funds. Many more donors purchased engraved bricks forthe walkway leading up to Grappone Hall. We encourage you to viewall of the bricks in the walkway at today’s ceremony.A Squad Member: Courtney OrdwayBy Maura SullivanWilliam Simonton Lecture Hall, on the 3rd floor ofNHTI’s new Grappone Hall. Photo by Larry Levinson. The building was designed by Duene Cowan, a 1977 graduate of NHTI and the owner of DC Designs Architectural Studios inConcord. Other key NHTI alumni who worked on the building include Jeffrey Trexler, ’77, Paul Leveille, ’85 and Wayne Fillion, whoattended NHTI with Mr. Cowan and Mr. Trexler in ’75-’76. Another alum, Travis Blake, ’05 was a student at NHTI when he drew theoriginal architectural rendering of the building.Grappone Hall will be Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified by the US Green BuildingCouncil. This designates Grappone Hall as a building that is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. NHTI plans to incorporatethe study of “being green” and long-term environmental sustainability into its educational curriculum. As a nursing major at the University of New Hampshire, Courtney Ordwayhated the sight of blood. So she traded in her scrubs for Shakespeare andbecame an English major, but she never shook her desire to enter the medicalfield.Working a public relations job for a hospice, Ordway was inspired by the nursesshe encountered during her day job and decided to take an EMT class just to see if shewould like it."I thought I wasn't doing enough with life," said Ordway, 33, of Warner. "A lotof my friends were EMTs, so I decided to get my EMT license and joined WarnerRescue."She said she found it empowering to be calm and disconnected from a situation tohelp people, like on one emergency call she responded to when someone was having apanic attack. This winter will mark her sixth year volunteering in Warner, but Ordway is nolonger a volunteer dissatisfied with her day job. She found so much meaning in helpingpeople as an EMT that she decided to go back to nursing school and earned her degreeCourtney Ordway (courtesy Concord Monitor)from NHTI two years ago, after "getting over the idea of seeing blood."These days, Ordway works as an interventional radiology nurse at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. Sheenjoys building relationships with the patients and "the amazing people you meet."Despite her busy nursing schedule, she still volunteers with Warner Rescue. Her favorite calls are the traumas, although thoseare few and far between, she says."A lot of the stuff we get isn't necessarily life-threatening. People just really need you for that moment," Ordway said. "There isthe medical component and a reason for you to be there, but a lot of time it seems more like emotional support."Ordway is not the only nurse involved in emergency medical care, but Sue Prentiss, chief of the state Bureau of EmergencyMedical Services, thinks that more nurses could easily get involved and don't know it. Prentiss said nurses receive EMT trainingwhile in school, meaning they would need to take only a 24-hour training program and a written and practical exam to become alicensed provider, as opposed to the longer training for those without medical backgrounds.Reprinted with permission from the Concord Monitor, November 9, 2009.NHTI Alumni Newsletter, Spring 20109

NHTI Alumni Shine atAnnual Legislative BreakfastNHTI’s annual LegislativeBreakfast, held on January15th, demonstrated the NHTItagline: “Start Here … Go Anywhere!”Six graduates of NHTI spoke to theMerrimack County Delegation, sharingtheir stories of success after graduation. Here are some of their remarks:“NHTI providedme with a chanceto start small andwork my way intocollege life directlyfrom high school. They told me to getinvolved, so I did. Iwas an executiveboard member for theCriminal Justice Club,Brandon McGorryCriminal Justice,2009an orientation leader and helped the Officeof Student Life with many campus events.Through all of this, I learned leadershipskills and how to set and achieve my goals.I gained the necessary study skills toprepare me for the next step: my Bachelor’sdegree. They helped me easily transfer toSNHU, where I am now working towardsmy degree in Justice Studies.”- Brandon McGorry, 2009, CriminalJustice“My mom had read about a newmajor at the Tech, Animation and GraphicGame Programming. Knowing that I’veplayed video games my whole life, shethought I should check it out. Now acouple of years later, I have my degree andI just started this week with Whipple HillCommunications, programming websitesfor schools. Without the degree, I knowthat I would not have gotten the job.”- Kevin Quinn, 2009, Animation andGraphic Game Programming“I came to NHTI in 2003 as a nontraditionalstudent, having graduated fromhigh school in 1992. Although I went tocollege for a year at that time, I left to raisea family, staying home with my son for thenext 10 years. I was so scared coming backbut the small class sizes helped and I wasable to really get to know my classmates. One major advantage I gained at NHTIwas three different internships. I hadbeen following one particular career pathbut I went in another direction after Idiscovered my love of social work.I have been working at McKennaHouse, a homeless shelter in Concord, foralmost 3 years. It is the concrete skills Ireceived at NHTI that allow me to do myjob.I talk to the guys at McKenna Houseabout school quite a bit and I always steerthem to NHTI. They can earn a degree intwo years, get a job and support themselvesand their families.”- Roxanna Shinall, 2005, HumanServicesKen ThompsonComputerEngineeringTechnology, 2003“I chose toattend NHTI afterI graduated fromConcord High School– and it was a reallygood choice. A lot ofmy friends went toother private, fouryearschools. Nowthey are coming out ofcollege with massivestudent loans to pay. When I left here, I hadzero debt.NHTI means a lot to me, mostlybecause I would have been one of thosekids who fell through the cracks. I wasnot a disciplined student. By the time Ifinished at NHTI, I had developed a thingcalled ‘academic discipline,’ somethingthat I lacked in high school. One professorcame to campus on a Sunday to helpme learn physics. That shows incrediblededication, to want to see their studentssucceed.”- Ken Thompson, 2003, ComputerEngineering Technology“I am a lifelongresident of Concord. After a tour of dutywith the U.S. Army,I came to NHTI.The professors arealso mentors andpeople like MartyHunt and DebbieHolland truly helpedme thrive while I washere. Then I wentJim PrattGeneral Studies,1998onto to Franklin Pierce University formy Bachelor’s degree and Southern NHUniversity for my Master’s of BusinessAdministration. I started inyour Accounting 101 class, followed byAccounting 102. Both you and ProfessorJoe Gula then helped me apply andtransition to SNHU where I finished mycollege education.Throughout your classes, you wouldconstantly tell me that I should become anaccounting major. This is one of the mainreasons that I switched to accounting whenI transferred to SNHU. Throughout mytime there, I maintained a 3.7 average GPAand became a member of the BusinessNational Honors Society. The summerbefore my graduation, I had an internshipat PricewaterhouseCoopers, where I amnow employed full-time.I am now beginning my second yearwith a Financial Services Team at PWC,working on Partnership and CorporateTax Returns. I just wanted to thank youfor your input and guidance while I wasat NHTI, and let you know that yoursuggestion to become an accounting majormade a huge impact on my life. CMYK OF PMS 202Alumni and FriendsSupport Students atNHTI!Most of us are well awareof the challenging timeswe live in today. TheU.S. is experiencing high ratesof unemployment and almostdaily news of mass layoffs. Oureconomy is struggling to recoverfrom a recession. As you mightimagine, students requestingscholarship support this year hasskyrocketed.NHTI is fortunate enough tohave a number of alumni, friendsand faculty who have establishedprivate scholarship funds. Forexample, the Zonta Club ofConcord named a scholarship inmemory of Eleanor Provencher, which is awarded each year to afemale student who has started a collegeeducation after having been out of highschool for five or more years. Membersof the NHTI Alumni Club funded theAlumni Scholarship Fund, which offersfinancial support for the son or daughterof an NHTI graduate. Most recently, Sheryl Rich-Kerncreated a new scholarship fund in memoryof her devoted husband, Richard. TheDr. Richard J. Kern, DMD, MemorialScholarship will award a Dental Hygienestudent with a $500 scholarship each year. The first Kern scholarship will be awardedthis spring.Dr. Kern was a well-known andbeloved dentist who practiced inMerrimack from 1986 to 2007. Mrs. Rich-Kern hoped to create a lasting legacy tohonor her husband, who believed deeply inthe power of higher education. Dr. Kernhad excelled as a student himself. Mrs.Rich-Kern was joined in her fundraisingefforts by Dr. Cameron Kharazi, whohelped secure a major grant from theGreater Nashua Dental Society. With these types of scholarships,NHTI is able to assist many (but not all)students who are in need of financialassistance. With each new scholarshipcreated, NHTI is positioned to help thatmany more students with paying for theirtuition, fees and books. Permanently endowedscholarships can be established with a $10,000 major gift. Here are some things to consider when setting up your scholarship fund atNHTI:• What is the name of your scholarship? Keep in mind that new scholarshipscan be established in honor or memory of a family member, close friend ormentor.• Is the scholarship for a NH resident only?• Which region or high school should the student have graduated from?• Is the scholarship for a particular major?• Should the recipient maintain a certain GPA?• Should the recipient be in need of financial assistance or will thescholarship be based on academic merit?• Does the scholarship application include an essay?NHTI is happy to work with alumni and friends to design scholarshipsthat truly reflect the donor’s wishes.
