A group of men and women in Banda Aceh perform backbreaking work<br />

to rebuild a school for <strong>the</strong>ir community’s children. Their <strong>world</strong> has been<br />

swept away, but <strong>the</strong>ir courage has not. Their dreams have been deferred, but<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have not been erased. They are not victims of a tsunami; <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

community’s hopes and dreams. They are a better future.<br />

Within hours of <strong>the</strong> worst natural disaster in modern times — <strong>the</strong> 2004<br />

Indian Ocean tsunami — <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> was on <strong>the</strong> ground in In<strong>do</strong>nesia, Sri<br />

Lanka and India working side by side with survivors to rebuild <strong>the</strong>ir lives. Our<br />

initial programs concentrated on meeting <strong>the</strong> health, shelter and food needs<br />

of 150,000 displaced individuals — especially children. But we never lost sight<br />

of <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> right kind of assistance at <strong>the</strong> right time can unleash <strong>the</strong><br />
