I have thoroughlyenjoyed sharing with you in Hykehamand Swallowbeck during the last (almost)2 years and have made many friends andhad many valuable experiences. It was certainly a shock when, in earlyFebruary, I was asked to move. It is truethat such a sudden move is not unusual inthe Methodist Church, but I didn’t expectit to be me! More change and anothermove was not really what I wanted orexpected. After much thought and prayerI agreed to go and am sure that it is whereGod wants me and that He will be withme in all the uncertainties that lie ahead. The upheaval will not be easy, the startingagain is certainly a challenge, the gettingto know people will be hard work – butdespite the fact that there is a huge amountof change going on around me and withinme I also know that I serve a God whodoes not change, who will always be withme, who will help me in all that lies aheadand supremely who loves me and caresfor me more than I can ever imagine. Heis not going to let me down. I’ll have mydifficult days, I’ll have my wonderfuldays. When I’m excited He is there, whenI’m frustrated He is there – ant that’s notgoing to change wherever I live or work. But it’s not just me that applies to.Everyone goes through change andeveryone can know God with them andhelping them if they’ll only reach out andask for his help. Will you do just that ifyou’re in that situation? God will not letyou down.Rev Susan Chambers 01522 681655revsue@btinternet.comThere are services every Sunday at NorthHykeham Methodist Church, ChapelLane at 10.45am and at SwallowbeckMethodist Church, Newark Road at10.30am. DIARY OF A LOCALNORTH HYKEHAM GARDENERSUMMERTIMESince my last article Spring has given way to Summer with its usualmixture of weather conditions, bringing all sorts of challenges withinthe garden environment both for us gardeners and the wildlife thatvisits .Only the other day whilst in the garden I found a young baby sparrowin difficulties in our water butt, once rescued he hid beneath a largeplanter, whereby, in due course he was re-united with his parents. Laterthat evening a family of sparrows visited our back door to feed. Were they trying to tell us something, who knows! Our wild garden has started to take shape with the sunflowers andcornflowers maturing well, and a sprig of holly found and replantedlast year is now almost 12 inches tall. The beech hedge is now in full leaf and home to numerous birdswhose songs and chirping is a delight to hear on a sunny morning. The vegetables are somewhat slow in development with the cucumbersbeing somewhat stubborn and refusing to germinate, whilst incontrast last year’s self set lettuces found in spring are the best I’veever grown.Ah summer, a truly glorious season so full of colour, scents, soundsand produce to enjoy.HYKEHAM LIONS CLUBThe Hykeham Lions have been quite busyfund raising and donating to worthy causesin the area, so let’s start off with our goodfriends at Asda.We spent a day before Easter handingout free raffle tickets for one of our verylarge Easter Eggs . These are made for theLions and as a PR job we raffle one free ofcharge every year and this year’s winnerwas a lovely lady living in St CrispinClose in Hykeham. Also a lovely selectiontin of biscuits supplied by Asda, went to alady living in Skellingthorpe. One request came in to fund a holidayfor a handicapped girl with Cerebral Palsy. After our welfare officer had looked longand hard at this request it was decided topart fund the request, and now this younggirl will get her holiday this summer. We all know and appreciate the workof our ambulance service and althoughthe attendance should be 8 minutes thatis not fast enough to deal with a cardiacarrest. We have in conjunction with EMASbought a portable defibrillator. This will be sited on the wall of the PFAclub in Newark Road and if anyone is inthat area when someone goes into a cardiacarrest the following must be carried out.1 Call 999 for an ambulance2 Tell the ambulance controller whereyou are and that you have a defibrillatoron the wall of the club. AmbulanceControl will give you the code to releaseit from the box and guide you throughits use.Anyone can use the defib and it mayjust save someone’s life. This is a very large investment from theLions for the people of Hykeham; if needsbe DO NOT BE AFRAID TO USE IT .We are in talks with Thorpe on the HillPrimary School. They have requestedfootball strips. This is currently underdiscussion but I am sure we will sortsomething for the pupils. There is going to be a visit of childrenPlease mention The North Hykeham Gazette when responding to advertisersto Lincoln from the Russian town ofChernobyl. I am sure we all knowwhat happened there so we are donating£100.00 to help with their visit toWoodside Falconry at Langworth.Sharon’s Christmas Dinner atWaddington. We are happy to makea donation to this as it will providea Christmas dinner for 35 people inWaddington who otherwise would not beindulging in the festivities.Hykeham Junior Football Club havebeen granted in principle £750.00 for aset of portable goals. We will foot the billwhen the goals arrive for next season andthe club has raised the remainder of thecost .Quiz Night at Rustons sports clubNewark Road is on 9 th July at the usualtime of 8.30pm.Casino nights are still a greatattraction and the last one we attendedwas at Burton Waters for a birthday party. It is a fun night with Roulette, Cards andCraps tables. The cost to hire us is only£250.00. Not bad for 10 members time forthe whole evening. Ring Lion Roger on01522 881383 should you be interested. That’s all for now folks.Lion Roger11

Hykeham won on all fourrinks, winning 92 shots to 56. There will be a returnmatch at Ilkeston later in the season, where Hykehamhope to win again!HYKEHAMBOWLS CLUBThe sport of bowls is a social and friendlygame as has been known for centuries. It hasnot however always been a smooth ride for thegame we have today. In the fourteenth centuryEdward III, who was intent on making sure hisbowmen had their archery practice, banned theplaying of bowls just as he did other sports.Despite the edict put on the game for nearly 500years, it still became popular and in the sixteenthcentury bowls were made with an intentionalbias. These were introduced, possibly by theDuke of Suffolk and in this way a new elementof skill was added to the game. The bowl withthe bias is the type of bowl we use today, exceptthat the bowls used today are made of differentmaterial not hard wood as was the case then.In previous months I have mentioned someof the competitions the Club is involved with, the largest of these was the Flowers Trophy.Twenty four teams took part on Sunday 10thMay starting at 9-30am. The weather was verygood on the day which produced very goodbowling conditions. After all the teams hadplayed several matches, the runners up werea team from Rustons, J.Hudson, D. Chapmanand C. Blanchard. The trophy winners werefrom Eagle, who won by one shot. The winningteam was A. Barks, F. Mellows and K. Lewis. There were cash prizes for both of these teams.Running within this competition is the LeysTrophy which is presented to the best HykehamTeam on the day. This trophy was won by P.Froggatt, S. Froggatt and C. Donald. The Ladies had a day of bowling in theirown competition on 17th May in the LadiesSynchro Pairs. This was an enjoyable event. Thefinal winners were C. Hempsall and G. Jessop. This month is busy as ever with OadbyBowls Club visiting on Wednesday 1st July. OnTuesday 7th July Bowls Lincolnshire Ladiesand Men have a match known as the Presidentsday. The Club have a competition for the NigelPrince Trophy on Saturday 11th July. This is anafternoon competition. On Sunday 12th JulyThe Lincoln Vice Presidents team play for theMarkillie Trophy and then on Sunday 26th Julythe Vice Presidents Chairman’s team play TheDeputy Chairman’s Team. Members of thepublic are welcome as spectators to any of thesematches. As you can see the Club is very busy andI have not mentioned the League or Clubcompetitions that the Bowls Club is involvedwith. If you would like further information aboutHykeham Bowls Club please contact John on01522683422.

HYKEHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHThe long(ish) school holiday is comingup very soon, together with the perennialproblem of what the children and youngpeople will do and where they can go. Inlight of cuts, the answer to the problemisn’t readily to hand now that youth clubsare closed and any activity they can beinvolved in will probably come with aprice tag. Some, of course, don’t reallywant something to do, just somewhere tomeet up, hang out and BE. Not many ofthese left here, either, because the lanes andfields where older people met when younghave now been smothered with houses, narrow streets and miniscule gardens. Anyyoung person lingering on a corner talkingto another will inspire someone to call thepolice to move them on. Building sitesand lakes and waterways bring their ownhazards and should be avoided too. Poorkids! Who’d be young in the mess we’vemade of this world? Who’d be a parenttrying to ensure they are safe whilst we areat work? There is a lot of talk nowadays aboutthe increasing amount of dog faeces left onpavements by selfish and lazy dog owners. If this is a problem in your area, you mighttry going on line and contact fixmystreet.com who will try to find someoneresponsible for clearing the mess up. If youknow of someone who does not clean upafter their animal you can report them tothe council and to the police as this is antisocial behavior and carries a penalty. Wishthe same could be said for cats! My gardenis a mine field and I do not own a cat!Now that the warm summer eveningswill soon be with us, please rememberthat voices carry, especially when there isno traffic noise. So, if you want a gossipwith, or about, a neighbour when youare gardening, or barbecuing, better towait until you are indoors with doors andwindows shut. In the end, it will make forbetter neighbourly relationships.Do remember to close and lock alldoors and windows before you go to bed.Keep out thieves, rats, mice, foxes, fleasand all things too horrible to think about. The newer estates in town have verynarrow roads and little space to park infront of the houses that seem to have nopavements in front of them. If you live onone of these roads and park your car a bitinconsiderately, you may be preventingpolice, fire and ambulance people fromgetting quickly where they are needed. This will not be a problem to fire engineswhich can push lighter vehicles out ofthe way (and bump up your insurancepremium) but it will mean police andparamedics having to park and run towhere they are needed and this may be thedifference between life an death. Not justfor somebody else, either.Generally, remember that if someoneknocks on your door you do not have toopen it and if someone bothers you on thetelephone, just put it down, don’t engagein conversation. They haven’t a clue whoyou actually are, just a randomly generatednumber and a name popping up on acomputer in Canada, Iceland, India, Egypt, etc, so they are not likely to call you toaccount for offending them. If they wereeven to understand the word ‘offend’ theywouldn’t be calling in the first place.Have a relaxing, happy and warmsummer and don’t worry! Be sensible andyou will be safe.JillPuzzle timesolutions (p12)MERRY GO ROUND SOLUTIONS1. OVERCOAT 2. PEDICURE3. STAFF NURSEFINAL ANSWER: TRAVERSEJust a ThoughtDon’t be conned! (by Ken)Conmen - they want to steal what we haveand destroy our peace. Our personal andbusiness world is targeted by fraudsters andcon-men. These despicable opportunistsaim to trick us out of what is rightfullyours, stealing it for themselves and theirorganisations. Their offers appear to bebrilliant but are really too good to be true.Police Fraud Squads investigate and arrestthese people, but they are never likely tobe eliminated.I receive frequent telephone coldcallerstelling me they are a world famouscomputer software company who havedetected a problem with my computer andto turn it on while they are calling so theycan fix it. Stopping short of calling them“Liar” (although I did once), I turn the calloff. And what about this one; “A reliablesource informs us that you have beeninvolved in a motoring accident”? Well, Inever knew that. These people attempt totrick us to give over our personal and bankdetails. So, this month’s thought is twoquestions: Would a fraudster be preparedto take a professionally administeredsevere beating almost to the point of deathand then be crucified in order to make itpossible that we and all mankind can haveeverlasting life? Would a fraudster die inorder to create a lie that eternally affects allof mankind?Jesus said, “I am the resurrection andthe life. The one who believes in me willlive, even though they die; and whoeverlives by believing in me will never die. Doyou believe this?” (John 11:25-26) Eversince conning Adam and Eve to doubt Godin the Garden of Eden satan, the originalconman in Genesis 3, has used this sameformula ever since, taking every deceitfulopportunity to con us and destroy our lives. The good news is that we don’t haveto be conned any longer; Jesus wants usto follow Him and He says, “I am the way,the truth, and the life,” (John 14:6) and“The thief’s purpose is to steal, kill anddestroy. My purpose is to give life in all itsfullness”, (John 10:10 TLB).At Faith Christian Fellowship awarm friendly welcome awaits you. SWAN COLONYBEAVER SCOUTSTo start off our next Meeting one ofthe Beavers gave a presentation for theCollectors award. His family obviouslyget out and about quite a lot, as hiscollection consisted of fridge magnetsfrom each visit. He had magnets fromCadbury World, Gainsborough Old Hall,Lincoln Castle and an owl from a wildlifecentre among many others. Collecting theRocket ship ready for take offmagnets helped him rememberwhere he had been and what hehad seen. How long before theparents of the other Beavers findtheir fridges fronts filling withmagnets? The theme for the restof the evening was teamworkand the Colony talked about allthe different forms of transportthey could think of before splittinginto four teams. The plan wasfor each team to draw a planof their chosen model andthen build it from a box ofjunk (cardboard, egg boxes, cardboard tubes and variousbottle tops). At the end of thesession they had produced aspeedboat, a space rocket, apolice car and a submarine. The speedboat hadpassengers, and propellermade from a small yoghurtpot cut to shape, whichactually turned. The policecar also had passengers andthe submarine had a veryimpressive periscope. Thespace rocket looked quiterealistic. The Beavers andthe adults had really enjoyedthis teamwork which tookquite some time, so therewas only time for a quicksong before it was time tofinish for the evening. Thanks to several parents helping out, ourMeeting before half-term went very well. After discussing road safety it was timefor a short walk to the Forum shoppingcentre, although one or two of the Beaversseemed to think a five minute walk was amarathon. Having reached the Forum theBeavers were split into teams - each parenttaking three Beavers. They were thenhanded quiz sheets with questions relatingto various businesses, questions such as“What colour are the bells”, “Which saintcan you find” and “Why do think this iscalled the Forum”. There were also twopicture questions, one with a large eyeand the second with a black horse, whichthe Beavers had to find. When they hadfinished and gathered together they werehighly delighted to find that Ladybird andDragonfly had paid a visit to the chippy. They all enjoyed a few chips before settingoff back to the hall. By the time we gotback the Beavers were ready for theirdrink, and despite having had chips, abiscuit. Everyone had enjoyed the evening.Following half term we welcomed somenew children into the Colony. I am surethey were quite impressed when one of theBeavers gave a presentation on swimming. He showed the Colony the badges he hadearned for swimming, which were allsewn on his trunks - unfortunately forhis Mum he has now grown out ofthis pair, so quite a lot of sewingto be done. The first game wasa corner game with the cornersbased on Lindum, Londinium,Eboracum and Aquae Sulis. Asyou may have guessed the restof the programme was based onthe Romans. Several facts wereread out about the Roman Army, and following a colouring sessionof pictures of a Roman soldier and aRoman scholar, there was aquiz. The fact sheets wereon a table but the Beaversstill had to find the correctinformation. As we wererunning short on time thequiz had to be cut short, butlooking at the answer sheetsthe Beavers did very well.Phew, another busy eveningand luckily nice weatherfor toasting marshmallows. The Beavers took turns attoasting marshmallows overa small BBQ and it waseasy to see who had alreadydone this, due to the messround one or two mouths.Meanwhile other Beaverswere learning tracking signsusing stones and twigs. Thishad to take place on the hardstanding as the stones werenot showing up on the grassand the adults in chargeA lot of swimming badges did not think the man whomowed the grass would appreciate it beingcovered in stones. The third activity wascolouring maps on aged paper (thanksto a few teabags), the Beavers put quitea lot of effort in this. At drinks time theBeavers had also enjoyed a piece of cakeprovided by one of the parents, so moresticky mouths. Several parents had helpedQuiz sheets at the Forumout on the activities and could not believehow quickly the time passed. Thank you tothe parents for their support.Swan Colony meets at St. Hugh’s ChurchHall, Harewood Crescent, North Hykehamon a Wednesday evening (6.pm – 7.30)and their leaders are Butterfly, Ladybirdand Dragonfly. There is also a secondBeaver Colony, which meets at All SaintsChurch Hall, Moor Lane, North Hykehamon a Friday evening (6.00 – 7.30) and theirleaders are Kanga, Roo and Joey. The costof all this fun – just £10 per month. The crossing gates werefinally closed on 22nd May and theengineers have now replaced thegate with railings. So very final.Campaigner Jane Firth told theGazette, “I am afraid that we failed, although it was not unexpected whenwe were challenging a powerfulnational company such as NetworkRail”.
