Countdown to the Ring<br />

In 2013, opera lovers across the world will celebrate the 200th anniversary<br />

of the birth of Richard Wagner. In Australia, we will also be celebrating,<br />

with Opera Australia set to perform Wagner’s epic “Ring Cycle” in<br />

Melbourne later in the year.<br />

In a new content collaborative venture, the Fine Music Network is<br />

celebrating by presenting an exciting new 10-part series, <strong>des</strong>igned to<br />

unravel the practical intricacies and cultural fascination related to<br />

Wagner’s epic production.<br />

Comprising a network of dedicated fine music community broadcasters<br />

across Australia, the Fine Music Network inclu<strong>des</strong> Fine Music 102.5<br />

(Sydney), <strong>3MBS</strong> Fine Music Melbourne (Melbourne), 4MBS Classic <strong>FM</strong><br />

(Brisbane), 5MBS (Adelaide) and ArtSound (Canberra), all of whom will<br />

contribute to the series.<br />

of topics as we examine<br />

the cultural phenomenon<br />

and attraction of the<br />

production. We will speak<br />

Australian production;<br />

examine a range of issues<br />

and historical perspectives<br />

in some depth with experts<br />

and thought lea<strong>der</strong>s, and make<br />

the production accessible to<br />

everyone by demystifying and<br />

contextualizing this epic work.<br />

From discussions revolving around the leitmotifs, to questions of<br />

religion, to a look back at the last complete Ring Cycle performance<br />

in Adelaide and “fly on the wall” style commentary from within the<br />

rehearsal rooms – Countdown to the Ring will engage both Wagner<br />

followers and those who are discove<strong>ring</strong> this epic work for the first time.<br />

The official Countdown commences at 8pm on 23 January 2013, in<br />

Wednesday Night at the Opera and broadcasts each month on 103.5<strong>FM</strong>,<br />

<strong>3MBS</strong> Digital & via the <strong>3MBS</strong> website.<br />
