We are still working from a “core” group of about 40 volunteers that we established several years ago.
These volunteers work on a regular basis as front desk receptionists, gift shop personnel, and special
events staff. We hold monthly volunteer training meetings, a chance for volunteers to connect to each other
and the staff. We have had quite a bit of interest in volunteering from individuals in the community and
we are looking forward to working with them in the future. However, more volunteers are always needed
on a regular or now-and-then basis, especially those who will step up and take some of the larger jobs
during NIC Fest. If you think you might be interested in volunteering at the NIC, drop in to one of the
monthly meetings or give Lori a call at 235-5247.
In 2010 volunteers donated an amazing 2902 hours to the NIC. Thank you to all of our wonderful
volunteers.

A Letter From The Board Chair
Thank you for another year of support for the Nicolaysen Art Museum. We sincerely hope that
you have enjoyed the permanent collections, special exhibitions, programs and events here at
the NIC. This past year the NIC has worked to build a sustainable foundation for the museum
while maintaining excellence in all that we offer. Bringing people and art together serves the betterment
of our community and culture, and we are proud to assist in that endeavor. This report
highlights our world-class exhibitions and collections, our engaging programming and community
outreach, and offers a glimpse of things to come. We are looking forward to seeing you at the
NIC soon and encourage you to join us for our summer events and programs!

The Nicolaysen Art Museum experienced many challenges and celebrated some important accomplishments
during the last year. The most important change came when the NIC said goodbye to long-time
Director, Holly Turner. During her tenure, Holly built a reputation for the museum as one of Wyoming’s
most important cultural institutions. Under her leadership, the NIC was recognized by the American Association
of Museums for a commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards and continued
institutional improvement. Accreditation by the American Association of Museums is a milestone
for the NIC as it positions us to make great strides in building sustainability, and developing exhibitions,
collections and educational programs. The accomplishments of the last year situate us to begin building
programs that underscore the vibrancy of our exhibitions and collections.
I am excited about the opportunity to be part of the Nicolaysen Art Museum and look forward to working
with the board and staff as we reaffirm our dedication to engaging the community. Join us as we continue
to strengthen our commitment to excellence and build on our collections, exhibitions and educational
initiatives.

The Registrar’s work is divided into 2 areas: 1) Care of the Permanent Collection, and 2) Exhibitions (loan
agreements, receipts, condition reports, unpacking/packing, and hanging the art) .
Collections Care: With funding from a CAP grant from Heritage Preservation, a consultant spent several
days in July 2009 making recommendations regarding collections care. The written report is useful for
grants and museum collection care plans. In Dec. 2009, with funding from the city, the humidity system
was replaced. This significantly impacts the museum’s ability to borrow artwork from major collections
and museums and improves the care of our permanent collection.
Accessions: Sixteen items were added to the permanent collection in fiscal year 2009/2010 bringing the
total to 6340.
Digitization: Over 850 records were added to the Museum’s online database bringing the total to almost
3000 records, covering almost all of the paintings and sculpture. The remaining 3000 items are the drawings
in the Carl Link and Conrad Schwiering collections which are currently being photographed and
added.
Loans: In the fall of 2009, the NIC loaned 30 of the maps in the Rosenthal Map Collection to the Fort
Caspar Museum for an exhibition.
Disaster Preparedness: On July 3, 2009, the museum experienced a major disaster when torrential rain
caused flooding on the first floor. No collection items were damaged; but the necessary evaluation and
repair disrupted museum operations for several months. This experience taught the museum staff a great
deal about disaster recovery and the need for disaster planning. We have greatly increased our emergency
supplies stockpile and in September 2009, the museum hosted a Disaster Recovery Workshop led by
a conservator from the Buffalo Bill Museum and funded by an IMLS grant.
Interns: The museum benefits greatly from the assistance of student interns in the Museum Studies Program
at Casper College. At any given time, 1 to 3 interns, working 6 to 15 hours weekly, are assisting the
Registrar with unpacking and hanging exhibits, photographing and cataloging the collection, and even exhibit
design.
The Registrar: As a member of the Registrars’ Committee of the Mountain Plains Museum Association,
the registrar participated in the “Helping Hands Brigade” during the annual conference in Cheyenne by
cataloging items at the historic Governor’s Mansion. The registrar is also involved in teaching one Collections
Care class at the Nicolaysen each semester .

Communications
During the past year, the NIC issued more than 75 marketing pieces and media releases on its exhibits, events
and activities throughout the year. The result was more than 850 media mentions (either through newspapers,
magazines, radio, television or on-line resources). Besides museum events and exhibitions, the three biggest
“news” highlights during this time – by far – were the July 3rd flood in Casper that impacted the museum, the
NIC’s accreditation by the American Association of Museums and the change in executive director.
In addition, more than 300 updates were made to the museum’s two web sites (thenic.org & nicfest.org) as well
as 3 rd party web sites with calendars where NIC events are listed. During that time, the NIC’s web site received
approximately 175,000 page views and the festival’s web site garnered approximately 12,000 page views.
The museum boosted its marketing effort beginning in April 2010 by expanding its social networking efforts,
specifically through the creation of Facebook pages for both the art museum itself and NIC Fest. During the
first three-months (April-June), the museum’s page attracted 315 “fans” and more than 2,000 page views while
the festival’s page drew 303 “fans” and more than 1,900 page views.
Technologically, the NIC added a “secondary” server to its peer-to-peer file sharing system to accommodate
the ever increasing demand on electronic resources and computing power.
The Museum Shop
During fiscal year 2009/2010, the Shop continued to implement the recommendations of Mr. Andrew
Andoniadis, Museum Shop Consultant, as our financial capabilities would allow. We began reducing
stock in some departments (particularly the Children’s Department) and broadening the selection of products
with a price point around $30 per his recommendation. We continue to refine our brand by highlighting
categories “to be known for”, increasing the selection and price range in our Jewelry Department and
bringing in new greeting card lines.
Both the Museum and the Shop faced challenges due to the aftermath of the flood on July 3, 2009. The
Shop was closed July 9, 10 and 11 for flood cleanup; closed early July 25; closed July 28 and August 1
for flood repairs; and closed August 23. At the end of September 2009, traffic into the Museum declined
due to the lack of an exhibition in the McMurry Gallery, the closure of the Discovery Center for renovations
and extensive road construction on Beech Street. Collectively, these closures during the peak of tourist
season had an impact on the Shop’s bottom line.

During the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the Discovery Center offered a
variety of weekly programs including Pre-school Picassos, Home
Schooling Art and birthday parties. The Education Department
had many children explore the hands-on art stations in the Discovery
Center, and hosted docent tours that involved local and
regional schools and community groups. In-house programming,
group tours and workshops served 6,000 patrons. Approximately
22,000 children were reached by the Nicolaysen Education Department
throughout the fiscal year.
Many educational events were hosted at the NIC through the
year. Casper Cares, Casper Reads, a Wyoming Reads Program, held a presentation for the entire first
grade of the Natrona County School District (NCSD). Casper College organized a Day of the Dead celebration.
This event included a gallery show with artwork from the Casper College art faculty and students.
GSG Architecture presented an architectural workshop on structural design and working with green building
materials. An art workshop with Australian musician/artist Paul Taylor was held by Artcore and the
NIC. Students from Star Lane Center, Fort Caspar Academy and St. Anthony’s Tri-Parish Catholic School
helped in painting a canvas mural designed by Paul Taylor and Jim Kopp. The students in the NCSD
Winter Bridges Program attended the NIC for lectures and art projects in January. I Want Candy: A
Healthy Lifestyle was sponsored by NCSD with students participating in art projects and lectures concerning
healthy eating and exercise.
Our summer activities included participation in the NCSD Back to School Bash which was held at the
Events Center. Quest Camp (Museum Consortium) and NIC Fest offered activities for 4,000 children. Also,
Summer Art Camp was held for two weeks in June. Two classes were held a day, four days a week
for ages 3-14. These programs consisted of acrylic painting, mixed media art, etching, drawing, printing
and polymer clay.
Outreach programming is growing every year, Discover Days and Art Works brought presentations and
hands-on programs to the NCSD students. Lisa Vlastos and Jim Kopp presented lectures and hands-on
art activities to 11,975 students in the Natrona County School District through the Discover Days program
(some through repeat visits).
The Artworks outreach program had high attendance and feedback was positive. This program brings art
to three different Boys and Girls Club locations in Casper. At these locations, the children are exposed to
art materials, artists and concepts that the children may never be exposed to on their own. The lessons
are taught by Erin Beckman on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays every week--703 students
attended throughout the fiscal year.

I Want Candy: The Sweet Stuff in American Art

2. Nutrition Workshops for Children
In partnerships with the Natrona County School District, the Wyoming—Action for Healthy Kids Association and the state of Wyoming and
County Extension office, and in conjunction with exhibiting I Want Candy: The Sweet Stuff in American Art, we planned an education series for
children of all ages throughout the NCSD and an evening program targeting an adult audience centered on the topics of sensible nutrition,
healthy lifestyle choices and disease prevention. During the week of November 2-6, 2009, the NIC hosted daily sessions for one week for
classroom visits to the I Want Candy exhibit. There were one morning and one afternoon session each day where students came in to see the
art, participate in art/health activities and listen to educational health information presented by Katrina Lorenzen, the Student Wellness Coordinator
for NCSD for approximately 2 hour sessions. The general session calendar was designed by Katrina, in cooperation with NIC staff, to
coordinate the grouping of similar visiting age groups and scheduling the classes that would like to participate. Katrina distributed the schedule
in an invitation to all teachers in the school district to participate during this special week of fun and health education. Classrooms were
scheduled on a first-come-first-serve basis. We estimated that we accommodated 400-600 students in the sessions total.
3. Adult Nutrition Lecture: How To Eat Chocolate by Dayle Hayes- November 5, 2009
Panel discussion with healthcare professionals, nutritionists and dieticians from Wyoming
Candy is endlessly enticing, and the numerous works of art incorporating confections parallel the profusion of commercial sweets available in
a riotous array of sizes, shapes, and colors. Contemporary artists have increasingly embraced sugar as one of their most popular subjects.
They invoke candy in everything from video art to site specific installations, exploring metaphors ranging from childhood innocence to decadent
consumerism. Although there are scattered examples of sweets in American nineteenth-century painting, they are rare. Candy did not
becomea major subject until the advent of Pop Art in the late 1950s, during a period when wide availability and mass marketing made sweets
ubiquitous.
Most of the 80 artworks in I WANT Candy appears beautifully ―sugar coated,‖ but often that beauty conceals need. Wayne Theibaud, the modern
master of still life painting, whose work has directly influenced a number of the artists in the exhibition, has said of his luscious desserts
locked behind glass, ―it’s the exclusionary aspect that gets me—there’s a lot of yearning there.‖

Nature, wilderness, and landscape continue to be invested with an extraordinary
significance pertaining to the American character and way of life. In her
intimate paintings, Karen Kitchel lets us see and explore the wildness in our
backyards and helps us focus on the human impact within the wild. That way
wilderness, nature, and landscape are not separate from our lives. In her
incredibly intricate paintings of the land, Karen Kitchel offers us a chance to
truly see nature as it is, intertwined in our everyday existence, and charged
with continual human use.
In the three decades that Karen Kitchel has been painting landscape, she
continues to wrestle with the natural, the authentic, and place as integral to
her art. Her landscapes display and celebrate the various processes of invasive
growth, change, and industry on the land. Additionally, she has subverted
many of the visual customs that are so ingrained in traditional landscape
such as a horizon line, overblown pictorial scale, timelessness, and a breathtaking
view. Kitchel continually depicts the lack of horizon line, a diminutive
scale, the human impact on land, as well as incorporating time and history,
and nurturing a grandeur in the mundane, scraggly tufts of undergrowth. In
visually turning our glance downward to what is under our feet, Kitchel never
lets us forget that nature is developed and destroyed by our human activity
and emotions.

Kate Petley emphatically states that she is not a painter. Though, on first glance, her panels, installations, and works on paper contain many
painterly elements such as atmospheric color, reflection, drawn lines, and meaty brushstrokes. Her sculptural panels are entirely composed
with different cut-out, collaged strips of film, photography, and more recently, graffiti elements that are layered within a thick coating of resin.
Petley creates artwork that combines real and abstracted fragments from landscape, nature, and urban environments, utilizing a very time and
labor-intensive technical process. Her artwork is concerned with perception, light and atmosphere—how we see and what emotions, memories,
and states of being we attach to the environment surrounding us.

Allen True’s West

Allen Tupper True (1881–1955) is regarded as Colorado’s premier native-born
artist of the twentieth century. He viewed his favorite subjects—the American
Indian and the West’s early settlers—as symbols of a proud though sometimes
tragic history. True’s path followed three phases—illustrator, fine artist, and muralist.
This exhibition explores all three, beginning with his earliest illustrations for
books and magazines. True gained distinction as an illustrator between 1905
and 1915 when he studied under the master Howard Pyle and worked shoulder
to shoulder with N. C. Wyeth. With the Taos artists from 1910 to 1917, True
created easel paintings that earned him regional and national fame. He then distinguished himself as a muralist after World War I with works
like the studies and large-scale mural on view here. His images decorated the walls of state capitols, libraries, schools, hospitals, businesses,
and financial institutions in Colorado, Wyoming, and beyond. Allen True’s West presents the full range of True’s legacy. His talents were diverse,
and his imagery evoked an entire era and a region’s multifaceted character.
This exhibition was organized by the Denver Art Museum’s Petrie Institute of Western Art, Denver Public Library’s Western History and Genealogy
Department and the Colorado Historical Society.
A Perfect Fit: Shoes Tell Stories
May 1- September 12, 2010
This exhibition explores the cultural meanings of shoes, presenting imaginative
and provocative objects of every size and craft medium. The exhibition will
contain approximately 120 objects from over 100 artists from all over the U. S.
plus Canada and Israel. The Perfect Fit explores the cultural meanings of
shoes, presenting imaginative and provocative objects of every size and craft
medium. This exhibition explores the shoe and its relation to art with work created
since 2004. From the iconic images of Van Gogh’s well-worn muddied
leather farmer’s boots to Andy Warhol’s glamorous, gem encrusted high heels,
artists continue to designate the shoe as a symbol of station, power, and
wealth. In this show, shoes express more than their role as footwear; they contain
multiple meanings that speak to issues of gender, sexuality, race and
class. This very contemporary exhibition that asks us to look at what shoes say
about us, our values, institutions, preconceptions and civilization.

Symposia
Arteducology (October 29-30, 2009)
This symposium was rescheduled for October 29-30, 2009 and was centered on energy, architecture, design, and ecology with a stronger
inclusion of education and advocacy overall. We partnered with AiA Wyoming and GSG Architecture as co-hosts of the event. The symposium
consisted of two architects who are the keynote speakers from Chicago and University of Notre Dame and a series of local and regional
speakers and panel discussions. There were three different panel sessions: Ecology and Energy, Whole Systems Health, and Education and
Advocacy. The first panel on Ecology and Energy explored how new thinking in ecology is informing sustainable energy production and design.
This panel included a landscape architect, a petroleum engineer who has lived off the grid for seven years and the SE Wyoming Coordinator
for Wind Resource Conservation and Development. The second panel on Whole Systems Health explored how the health of the planet,
community, family and individual pertains to everyone. This panel included Casper’s City Manager, the Mayor of Jackson, WY, and the Campbell
County School District’s Healthy Schools Coordinator. The third panel on the arts, education, and advocacy delved into building the foundation
for the future through arts, architecture, education and advocacy. The panelists are Lisa Hatchadoorian, Curator at the Nicolaysen,
Bruce Richardson, Senior Lecturer at UW/CC, and Manny Juarez, Design Plus, Albuquerque. In the overall symposium, speakers presented
and discussed the importance of the placement and design of school buildings in our communities, the importance of including design and
architecture in both the education of our children and in the construction of education buildings, disease prevention and the overall health of
our communities as it relates to ecology, design and people as well as the importance of advocacy at a young age and as part of daily life and
contemporary art projects that combine ecology and educational awareness. We offered 20 scholarships to NCSD high school students who
attended this exceptional educational and vocational opportunity to listen to the myriad of topics that will be presented and most importantly, to
―rub shoulders‖ with over 200 architects, educators, authorities and industry professionals that will be participating in the symposium. This is
an opportunity otherwise unavailable to teens in our community interested in the topics of art, ecology, design, architecture and more.
