If the radius is fixed, thevelocity can be deduced from the strength of the magneticfield.The apparatus consists of a threaded holder for the betasource and a Plexiglas block with a narrow, quarter circulargroove for the beta particles. The block has a notch for a Halleffect probe. A strong electromagnet (e.g. 4593.00, 4595.00plus 2 ea. 4590.40) and a teslameter (4060.50) are needed5165.00 Beta spectrometer apparatus5165.00Deflection of beta particlesThe deflection of beta particles is easily demonstrated withthis accessory for the bench for experiments with radioactivity(5141.00). The magnetic field is provided by a pair of strongpermanent magnets. The direction of the field can be reversedand the magnets can be removed altogether.A beta source is mounted in a collimator that can turn aroundthe centre of the magnets, thereby changing the anglebetween the incoming particle beam and a Geiger-Müllerdetector.To demonstrate the effect of the magnetic field on the betaradiation, you start with the magnets removed from theapparatus and align the beta source and the detector. Whenthe magnets are re-introduced, the radiation “disappears”.By changing the angle between source and deflector, theradiation can be found again – but only if the magnetic field isoriented correctly.From the angle of deflection the kinetic energy of theparticles can be deduced.
