April 23 - 29, 2011Water, juice, buttermilk sachets seizedThe Chennai Corporationseized drinking water, fruit juiceand buttermilk sachets fromabout 300 shops in a number ofareas of the city including T.Nagar and K. K. Nagar on April20.The packets did not meet themandatory requirements suchas printing of manufacturingdate, address of the manufacturer,batch number and expirydate, according to Corporationofficials.The officials also seized over200 drinking water cans from alorry in Shenoy Nagar and atotal of 795 kg. of food productsfrom roadside eateries. Over300 workers of the civic bodyparticipated in the drive.The Health Department ofthe civic body has sent theseized water and food productsfor analysis.Retail sellers and manufacturerswill face action underthe Prevention of Food AdulterationAct, 1954 if the resultsof the analysis show contaminationof the samples.As contaminated water andfood could cause acute diarrhoealdiseases, the civic bodyhas taken this initiative basedon complaints received fromthe public.
