ArtworksArtist EvolutionContemporary Artist Lara Campiglia’s Latest Painting CollectionStory by Carissa Chesanek I Photos courtesy of Lara CampigliaLara Campiglia is known for her colorful vision and painterlyscenery that captivates her audience with its vibrant, crafty appeal.Real life emotions and everyday life inspire her creativity, as hercontemporary paintings not only are visually brilliant to look at, butalso relates to human beings and the environment they are in.Art wasn’t the only interest in this painter’s mind. Before conquering the artworld artist realm, she held a successful business career for 15 years withinreal estate and construction industries in Montevideo, Uruguay. In theearly 90’s, Campiglia began working with art at various art shops, whicheventually led her to making it more of a full time gig in 2008, and thencompletely changed her career from business to art in 2010, where she isstill very passionate about today. Her latest collection, “City from the Sky” revolves around people and thebalance of nature, such as a “story that begins on earth as a result of thehuman evolution,” Campiglia stated. The first set of paintings were madehere while she was in Miami last year, and the second set were created inUruguay when she returned home.“Sometimes humans act in harmony with our planet, and sometimes weinvade with no mercy,” she said. “But what prevails is the hope for harmonythat can be seen in some of my works such as raising the doubt if it was acoherent placement of those numbers in the canvas, which later on mightbecome a town, a factory, or a playground.”Sometimes humans act“ in harmony with our planet, and sometimes we invadewith no mercy.”This type of thinking hasn’t just come out of nowhere either. Campiglia hasfelt that her art is a form of communication between human beings, whichfundamentally makes it so powerful. “The creative process begins with thecommunication in the language of colors and shapes, the freedom thatallows us to open doors to the intuition and belief that “we are directly connectedwith the universe,” she said. We can communicate not only throughwords but also using other tools on a work of art.”The “City from the Sky” series was recently displayed at the Zorrilla de SanMartin Museum in Uruguay, last April. She will now showcase her series herein Miami this summer. Campiglia was invited to be part of the InternationalBiennale Artists at the L.M.N.T. Gallery in Wynwood, where three pieces fromher latest series, “City from the Sky” will be on display from Thursday, June7 through Tuesday, June 26. ◆22 Design District

Design ShowcaseIndestructible BeautyMast Elements Collection Offers Durable Outdoor DesignsStory by Carissa Chesanek I Photos courtesy of Clima Outdoor CollectionsExtraordinarily sleek and modern, Mast Elements brings freshdesigns to Florida with long lasting materials made specifically forcomfortable and stylish outdoor living. Made exclusively of carbonfiber, these contemporary outdoor styles offer tough furniture fora practical but fashionable lifestyle. The designs are powerful and sleekincluding the smooth designs of the unique Ray lounge chair.Physicist and scientist, Roger Bacon first created the high-performancecarbon fiber back in 1958, consisting mostly of thin graphite fibers producedin sheets, but at that time was estimated to cost millions of dollarsper pound. To create this very thin, thread-like form, fibers are bondedtogether usually with a type of resin, so that the structure holds strong to itsfilaments while staying protected and keeping the proper shape throughoutthe entire design piece.Over the years, scientists and industrialists have been able to come up witha more cost efficient way to produce this type of material, which initiallyhappened in 1969 when the first carbon fiber was made for use.The durable carbon fiber offers highmechanical “ resistance, low density, thermalinsulation, resistance to temperaturechanges and to chemical agents, furtherthan good fireproof qualities.”Originally from Italy, Mast Elements can now be found in Miami’s own DesignDistrict in Clima Outdoor Collections. The line is made of the latest in outdoorfurniture materials, such as the durable carbon fiber which offers high“mechanical resistance, low density, thermal insulation and resistance totemperature changes and to chemical agents, further than good fireproofqualities.” This is the same material that designers are now using to createLuxury Yachts too.Find all the latest Mast Elements designs exclusively at Clima OutdoorCollections. ◆28 Design District

Above Fez jars in cobalt blue withbrass details. The inspiration for this home, came from the ideas of the client themselves.Already, envisioning what they wanted inside their newly purchasedNaples home, they walked inside the Design District’s JalanJalan Collection with a prominent knowledge of what they wanted:a space that captures their worldy and beach-chic lifestyles. As a full service designer showroom, Jalan Jalan Collection works closely withtheir private clients to create an interior space that is visionary to both thedesigner and the client. Striving as being more of a consultation type of servicewith a “hands on approach,” the team at this Design District showroom isable to capture what the client wants in a professional but creative aspect, justlike they did with their recent Naples customers. The process all started when the couple walked into Jalan Jalan Collection ona Saturday afternoon, wandering around the showroom, finding inspirationfrom all over. “They walked in on a Saturday and fell in love with the collectionsfrom around the world,” said designer Bruce Platt from Jalan Jalan Collection.“They knew what they wanted and we knew how to deliver it.”Upon entering the home, Platt and his team previewed the space to see whatthe owners really wanted throughout the area. Platt explains that the rest of thefour days were intense with “going back and forth to furnish and decorate thespace,” which included hanging up artwork and mirrors for a more relaxed andbeach-inspired setting that would ideally be their “Naples vacation home.”As pronounced worldwide jet-setter's, this space would be the owner’s thirdhome, and knew “they wanted a clean, uncluttered organic yet fresh vibe thatallowed them to relish in the Naples climate and lifestyle.”In order to get this type of sanctuary, the team started out with the dining roomadding mix matched furniture that complemented each. The table is a mainfocal area with its root base that offers a sort of 50's inspired style, but stillgives a contemporary feel with a sleek, straight edge and thickly cut, roundglass top.Platt paired different type of mixed oversized chairs with the table that includedtwo in a bright orange leather and the remaining in canvas with tackaccents instead of nail heads to give it an “unfinished” look. Tranquil QuartersSoJo Design Createsa Relaxing Beach OasisStory by Carissa Chesanek I Photos by Joey AccordinoJoelsson’s roof top terrace islocated along the bay in the CapriSouth Beach Condominiums.

HHaving lived directly on the beach for more than 10 years, SofiaJoelsson knew she wanted her home to feel more tranquil, with anorganic, harmonious flow throughout. As the Creative Director andPrincipal at SoJo Design LLC, she and her team created a beautifulspace full of the comforts of home, with a beach-inspired attitude. Her newcondo at Capri South Beach is gorgeous inside and out, with impeccabledesign that shadows her own personality and the comforts of the beach-vibeMiami is known for.Four years of living at the Setai in South Beach, Joelsson came to realize hersudden need for a larger space to accommodate her social lifestyle. “I hadlived directly on the beach for over 10 years the last 4 years at the Setai,” shesaid. “Although a fantastic living with all hotel amenities the unit I had was gettingtoo small and I felt I missed entertaining and having people over.”Joelsson is now located along the bay in the Capri South BeachCondominiums. Her unit sits directly along the bay, where she has an impeccableview of downtown showcasing the Miami skyline perfectly. There is alsoa boat dock right out in front that is located immediately on the bay. With a unitthis breathtaking on the outside, the team knew it needed to share the similarambiance on the inside. The building is by no means a massive sky scraper. Instead, it is an intimatelandmark of only six stories, that give a sense of community and a real homefeel within the condominiums. All of the unit owners have their own floor, consistingof a large layout span. The playful artwork also helped contrast the monotone surroundingto express the overall look and feel Joelsson was looking to achieve.Keeping within the beach-theme, the monochromatic furniture allows for asimple elegance that is not overpowering. While it might not deliver a lot ofpowerful or distracting colors, it administers a great deal of texture. Layersupon layers create a crafty appearance without adding a lot of extra color, butinstead pieces that want to be felt and used, including the cow hide rug fromArtefacto and light fixtures from Planet Lighting.Entering the living room, texture is something that definitely entraps you, especiallythe wall fixings and the lamp that appears to have a tree trunk of sorts.Even the accent throw pillows are very texturized, and the bronze coffee tableby Baker offers a solid texture. Small light fixtures brighten the room enough to give amplelighting with a soft and comfortable feel.As for the roof top terrace, this space is more of a game area for children orthose fun loving adults that Joelsson welcomes into her home. While there areplenty of games for kids to play including a large chess table, adults have a funspace to play as well. A jacuzzi fills the area, along with a barbecue included inthe outdoor kitchen space, a curricular bar that’s accented with lots of greenery, and several different seating areas that have a very South Beach typelounge vibe. Behind the DesignsQ & A:The InspirationBehind ADesign GeniusAlberto Meda Opens Up About hisInspiration and Success in DesignStory by Carissa ChesanekPhotos courtesy of AliasAward winning designer and architect, AlbertoMeda is considered a design master, and witha successful career stemming from the mid1960’s, Meda is one of the most respectednames in design. His masterpiece Teak Collectionis an award winning line of stylish anddurable furniture created exclusively for Alias.QYour Teak Collection has had worldwide success and won you severalawards including the Compassod’Oro. Tell us more about that collectionand your inspiration behind it.AThe Teak Collection was born afterthe “Setes” project that won the competition“una panchina per Milano”(a bench for Milan). Alias supported me andthe realization of the prototypes and decidedto put the bench into production with thelegs in die-cast aluminum and the backrest inteak flats. From this concept, the idea of afull outdoor collection was accomplished withthe chair, the chaise lounge, and the table.Your Frame chair for Alias is a staple ofmodern design- what was your thought processbehind that design? How does it feelto see new designers use it as an influencein their work?Frame chairs, in all their various forms (Highframe,Artframe, Longframe, Floating-frame andRollingframe) are all derived from the same corefoundation: die-cast and extruded aluminum, polyester mesh and industrial screws. The chairsare defined by the use of a complex extrusionconstruction process that renders the object lightwith smoothly connected parts that give a continuousappearance. I disapprove of objects thatare copies of the final result of the Frame. However,I am very happy when I discover that someof my ideas and designs have become a creativestarting point for different uses. The collaboration with Alias started manyyears ago and is still going strong today. How do you keep a relationship so vitalfor so long?Maybe the reason is the synchronicity of thoughtsbetween the company and the designer. What advice do you have to young designersaspiring for success? If you want to be an industrial designer youhave to be around the actual industry andinteract with the artisans and crafts peoplewho are making the products in order toacquire the technical competence to converseand learn from them. What do you think is the role of a designer ina moment of economical crisis?A designer today has to understand the contextin which he or she operates and adjust tothe industrial choices in order to producegrowth that is not harmful to the environment.A designer must have a critical way of thinkingand opposed to non-useful products thatmake no sense. The designer must proposesustainable products with ethical solutions;ones that last throughout a lifetime. How important is the research in materialsfor projects? Do you generally have materialsbefore you start designing? To have the knowledge of the palette ofmaterials is fundamental but you never startfrom materials. You start from an idea thattries to solve a problem and you “give it ashape” using the appropriate material. As a design leader with years of experience, what still inspires you today that inspiredyou when you first began? The curiosity of learning, of discovering, andthe pleasure you receive when you find theappropriate solution. ◆46 Design District
