Gymnast Qualifies for Regional MeetJunior Karianna Adamson, a level 9 gymnast with the Maple City Gymnastics team,competed in the USAG State Meet in Lansing, Michigan. She finished third on bars andsixth in the all-around competition, qualifying her for the Five State Regional Meet inIndianapolis.<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> Welcomes Author of The Last Town on EarthOn April 24, <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> welcomed Thomas Mullen, author of The Last Town onEarth, as the featured speaker in the CCHS Reads program. He met with students in theCCHS Book Club, spoke at an all-school assembly in the CCHS Sullivan Center, andaddressed the CCHS faculty and staff after school.Mr. Mullen was also featured at an Evening with the Author on April 23 at the HistoricChurch of St. Patrick rectory. This was a private reception for the benefit of <strong>Central</strong><strong>Catholic</strong>.The Last Town on Earth is Thomas Mullen’s debut novel that takes place in 1918.America is fighting a war on foreign soil that has divided the nation. Meanwhile, rumorsof the spread of the deadliest epidemic ever are causing panic on the home front. Theuninfected town of Commonwealth, Washington votes to quarantine itself, and two youngfriends are asked to guard the town entrance and keep strangers out. One day, a starving,cold - and seemingly ill - soldier comes out of the woods begging for sanctuary, and thetwo guards are confronted with an agonizing moral dilemma.The students at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> read the book, and teachers incorporated it intoclassroom lessons in many subject areas. The project culminated with Mr. Mullen’spersonal visit to the school.The CCHS Reads program began at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> during the 2006-07 school year toencourage students to read for fun. In the program, teachers and students read the samebook and then study it as it is integrated into classroom lessons. CCHS Reads is designedto promote lifelong reading by encouraging students to read and discuss an author’s workbefore and after the author visits the school for an all-school assembly.The Last Town on Earth was named Best Debut Novel of 2006 by USA Today, was aChicago Tribune Best Book of the Year, a New York Times Editor’s Choice, and wasawarded the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for excellence in historical fiction. ThomasMullen was born and raised in Rhode Island, graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin,Ohio, and currently lives in Atlanta with his wife and two sons.
<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> Earth Day Assembly Featured Steve PollickSteve Pollick, retired outdoors editor for the Toledo Blade, was the featured speaker at<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong>’s Earth Day assembly on April 20. He spoke to students about thehistory of Earth Day and environmental issues.Mr. Pollick joined the Blade staff in December 1971 as a general assignment reporter, andhe spent nearly 30 years as the outdoors editor. During that time, he traveled to 35countries and reported on hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, birding, and canoeing,as well as nature and issues concerning the environment. He twice canoed the length ofthe Maumee River, from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Toledo, in 1984 and in 2011.Irish Basketball Academic RecognitionThe Fighting Irish basketball team was nominated for an academic award by the Ohio<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Basketball Coaches Association. The boys were recognized for theircombined 3.52 team grade point average.Team members include Michael Anderson, CJ Bussey, Deontae Cole, Alex Grau, NateHarris, Gaylon Hughes, Danny Istler, DeShone Kizer, Logan Lorenzen, DJ Moody,Zack Pacer, Keith Towbridge, Danielle Turner, and Chris Walker.
