<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> students attended a performance of The Black –Jew Dialogues the dayafter the faculty workshop. The show, which combines sketches, improvisations, andmulti-media, is based on the history and absurdity of prejudice and racism within thecontext of the American Black-Jew experience.The ultimate goal of these presentations is to create awareness about how much allAmericans actually have in common, including their own hatred, bigotry, and biases.Graduate Speaks to IB Students2005 <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> graduate Danielle McKinney visited juniors and seniors in theInternational Baccalaureate classes on October 10 to talk about the importance of being aglobal citizen and learning about other cultures. Danielle has a master’s degree in globalinternational relations from Webster University and a bachelor’s degree in politicalscience and African American & African studies from the Ohio State University. She hastraveled to Europe, Asia, and Africa to learn about their cultures, environments, andissues affecting their people. Danielle feels very strongly about volunteer service andwanted to give back to <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong>. She said, “<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> helped me developa passion for community service and education. It gave me an open mind and a kindheart to care and serve the world.”Lady Irish Soccer Team Takes League ChampionshipCongratulations to the Lady Irish varsity soccer team for winning the first ever ThreeRivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) women’s league championship! The team’s TRACrecord was 6 wins and 1 tie, and they finished regular season play with an 8-0 victoryover Whitmer <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. The team began tournament play with an 8-0 sectional winover Bowsher.Lady Irish varsity soccer team members include: Mariah Branyan, Maggie Buchele,Sam Burkholder, Caitlyn Canestraro, Renyssa Davis, Emily Durbak, Alyssa Huff,Courtney Iannucci, Chelsie Jagodzinski, Haley Malaczewski, Heather Mallin, AngieMartinez, Katie Spalding, Sara Taylor, Khadija Thompson, Rachel Todak, andTaylor Zapadka.Lady Irish Golfers Help Out at Senior OpenOn July 29, members of the Lady Irish golf team volunteered at the Senior Open in themembers’ tent helping the Toledo Public <strong>School</strong>s Special Olympics organization prepareand serve food for spectators of the golfing event. They provided over 40 volunteerhours throughout the day, and proceeds from the event benefited the Special Olympics.


Lady Irish golfers who participated included sophomores Emily Musallam and MollySullivan, senior Abby Nowak, and 2011 graduate Carolyn Comes. The girls enjoyedthe event and tried to catch a glimpse of the professional players as they came in on the18 th hole.That same week, one of the Lady Irish junior varsity golfers, junior Allie Comes,volunteered for over 20 hours at a “Lose the Training Wheels” event, helping kids withspecial needs learn to ride bikes without training wheels. Allie was inspired by heryounger brother, John Ross Comes, who learned to ride his bike in the program threeyears ago. More Lady Irish golfers plan to volunteer at this event next year.Fighting Irish Golfers Work at Family HouseOn October 13, members of the boys’ golf team headed to Family House to volunteertheir time. The students washed walls leading up to the house’s new library and loungeand prepped the walls for painting. They also plucked weeds and turned mulch on thechildren’s playground. Family House is a non-profit organization that provides homelessfamilies in crisis with professional housing and social services and helps them becomeself-sufficient.Members of the Fighting Irish golf team are: Max Boyle, Aidan Dillon, Mike Furlong,Logan Klatt, Nick LaPorta, Nolan Martis, Alex McCartney, Evan McNair, JonahNeary, Noah Pierce, John Purviance, Eric Ragan, Gary Ruffier, Cullin Smith, andBrandon Viengmany.Rowers Compete at Frogtown RegattaSenior crew team members Emily Hooper and Maggie Steinmiller competed in the twomanevent at Toledo’s Frogtown Regatta in September. Neither Emily nor Maggie hadany experience working in a two-man boat, but they decided to compete less than a weekbefore the event. They spent extra hours practicing their technique, and their initiative,dedication, and determination led them to the bronze medal in the Women’s Open. Theyfinished just 35 seconds behind the silver medal winners.Spanish Club OfficersCongratulations to the following students were elected officers by the Spanish Club:President – Mike Burriola, Vice President – Aaron Powers, and Treasurer – MattMowka.

This is a tremendous way tokeep everyone in communication about the status of the transcript and other materials that are beingmailed to colleges. In order to properly fill out the CAPS sheet, students need to know the mailingaddress of the school to which they are applying.On-Line Applications:<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> seniors have had many college representatives visit our campus. All of them highlyencouraged our students to use the on-line applications available to them. Students were encouraged tomake copies of their applications before sending them as a great way to keep a paper trail of what exactlywas sent to the college to which they are applying. When students apply on-line, it is absolutely criticalthat they complete all portions of the application and that they bring a confirmation of completion to theGuidance Office with their CAPS sheet. The College Admissions representatives expressed theirgratitude for the neatness of these on-line applications.Personal Essays:Students are encouraged to really take some time in communicating their story in their college essays.College representatives expressed to <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> students the importance of the personal essay. Itwas best described as “when all things are even, it is the essay that makes the final decision”.Merit Based Scholarships:Each college rep spoke with the students about Merit Based Scholarships. Each school has a specificdeadline that they will accept an increase in college admission test scores and grade point averages. It isin the best interest of the student to know when the last date is that colleges will accept an increase in


performance. The significance of Merit Based Scholarships is that most colleges allow you toautomatically qualify when you apply to their school and they are renewable for the four years that youattend their college or university. The key for Merit Based Scholarships is to apply and get into theircomputer system and then communicate with your college or university immediately, when there is anincrease in numbers.December ACT:The next test date for the ACT is December 10, 2011. Students must complete their registration byNovember 4, 2011 in order to avoid a late fee. Most <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> students register for the ACT online at: www.actstudent.org. A reminder that <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong>’s <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Code is: 365-005. Thestudents at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> have great numbers to qualify for private scholarships offered bysmall businesses, companies, banks, etc. Ask your family members about scholarships that might beoffered in their respective work places. Your students have the numbers to get attention and get money.Often these work-based scholarships go unclaimed because students do not know to apply for them.Holidays are a great time to make that family connection and collect resources that are available to you.College and University Scholarships:Once your student has been accepted into a college or university, you are encouraged to contact theFinancial Aid and Scholarship Office on that campus and request information that they have availableabout any and all scholarships available to incoming freshmen. It is amazing to see the number ofscholarships for incoming freshmen. Be aggressive in this area and keep the lines of communication openwith your college admissions counselor. The idea of using e-mail to communicate questions aboutapplications and scholarships is encouraged.College Financial Aid Night:Paying for college is an important family decision. Seniors and their parents should make plans to attendthe Financial Aid Night at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. A collegefinancial aid representative will explain the financial aid process and how to complete the Free


Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA priority dates are February 15 and March1. You won’t want to miss this important meeting.College Pathway for the Class of 2012It has been an exciting and busy year for the seniors in the Class of 2012 and College Admission. Thefollowing is a brief summary of all of the opportunities that have been available for the Class of 2012:-Individual meetings in the summer with parent and student to discuss college admission-Over 40 college reps visited the <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> campus this fall to discuss college admission with ourstudents in college meetings-Every student was given individual instruction in his or her English class about how to complete theirtranscript request form-English teachers spent a great deal of class time instructing and critiquing college essays-The annual <strong>Catholic</strong> College Fair was held at Lourdes College in October-A mini college fair was held at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> and included college reps from SienaHeights, Lourdes University, The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Mercy Collegeand Owens Community College.**Students are encouraged to get their applications to the Guidance Office prior toThanksgiving to receive the best college admission opportunity. **
