What to doif the alarm soundsIf <strong>Smoke</strong>Alarm Sounds1. Leave immediately, following your family’s escape plan.YESFeel the door.Is it hot?NOSample:2. As you leave, don’t open any inside doors without fi rstfeeling the surface. If a door is hot, or you see smokecoming through the cracks, do not open the door. Use analternative exit.3. If the inside of the door is cool, place your shoulderagainst it, open it slightly and be ready to slam it shut ifheat and smoke rush in.4. If the air is smoky, stay as close to the fl oor as possible.5. Breathe shallowly through a cloth, which if possible, shouldbe wet.6. Once outside, go to your pre-selected assembly area andmake sure everyone else is there.7. Call the Fire Department from a neighbour’s home – neverfrom your own.8. Do not return to your home until fi re offi cials give youpermission to do so.Go to the window.Can you open it?YESClimb out ofthe window.NOYESBreak the windowwith a chair or stool,place a rug orblankets over thewindow sill, climbout – beware ofbroken glass.Move around theoutside of the houseand knock on all thewindows to wakeanyone inside.Look at thebottom of the door –is smoke comingfrom underthe door?NOOpen doorcautiously– STAY LOW!Closing all doorsand, alerting otheroccupants as yougo, leave the house.Developinganescape planHave an escape plan. In the event a fi re does break out inyour home, every member of the family should be preparedand know exactly what to do. Practise crawling low undersmoke, checking doors before opening, and make sureeveryone knows at least two ways out of the home. Make a fl oor plan which clearly indicates all doors andwindows in your home and at least two escape routes fromeach room. Multi-storey dwellings require special attention.For instance, upper storey windows may need a chainladder or other fi re stairway as a means of exit.2. Determine a place outside your home (e.g. the letter boxor front fence) where all family members can assemble if afi re o ccurs.3. Discuss your escape plan with all members of your family.Show everyone, particularly young children, what to do incase of a fi re.4. Make sure all family members are familiar with the soundof the detector.5.
