PhotoelectricvsIonisationWhen choosing a smoke alarm, it is important to know thatdifferent models use different methods to detect smoke. There are two main types of smoke detectors: ionisation, and photoelectric types. Each is specifi cally designed todetect different types of smoke, and give the earliest possiblewarning in the event of a fi re.The amount of warning given depends on the type ofcombustible material that is burning, and the type of alarmselected for your home. The more warning you get, the moretime you have to escape the deadly toxic smoke and fl ames.Ionisation type alarms respond faster to small smoke particles, such as those given off by burning paper, straw, or wood.Photoelectric alarms respond faster to larger smoke particles, such as those produced by burning foam, rubber, plasticsand other synthetic materials.Nowadays, most homes are fi lled with synthetic materials. These include nylon found in carpets and curtains, plasticconsumer goods and the foam rubber found in a lounge chairor mattress of your bed. Therefore the best detector type for your home is usuallya photoelectric detector type. For the ultimate protection,a combination of both ionisation and photoelectric isrecommended.TypicalapplicationsMODEL TYPE TYPICAL APPLICATIONS755PSMA Photoelectric • Lounge755PFM• Living areas• Bedrooms• Rumpus755SMA Ionisation • Hallway755FM• Corridor• Study/ Home officePhotoelectricalarms are recommendedin most situationswhy insist onmains powered?Where battery powered alarmsare present, up to 40% of themare non-functional due to poormaintenance or flat batteries.Australian Bureau of StatisticsBatteryvsMains PoweredSmoke alarms can either be mains powered, or batterypowered. Battery powered smoke alarms are commonlyavailable from supermarkets and hardware stores. Thesetypes of alarms DO NOT comply with the required regulationsfor new buildings, as they offer an inferior level of protection.Battery alarms have a big weakness – they rely on YOU to testand change the battery on a regular basis. All too often we getlazy or forget to do this, and the results can be catastrophic. In the event the battery goes fl at, the alarm cannot detectsmoke, and will not alert you to any danger. All mains powered smoke alarms have a continuous sourceof power and also incorporate a backup battery. That waythe alarm can respond to the presence of smoke, even if themains power is cut.Mains powered smoke alarms also offer features that are notavailable in battery powered models, including the ability tobe interconnected.Mains powered smoke alarms can also be interconnectedso that when one alarm trips, all units will sound – ensuringadequate warning and the best possible reaction time. All Clipsal smoke alarms aresupplied with a high qualityEnergizer alkaline battery to ensurelong life and superior performance.10 755 Series Smoke Alarms 755 Series Smoke Alarms 11

How manysmoke alarms do I need?If you sleep with your bedroom doors closed:If you have a stairway leading to another storey:The Building Code of Australia mandates the installation ofat least one smoke alarm in every new home – but is oneenough?Let’s say the alarm is installed in the main living area of yourhome and a fi re breaks out. If you are asleep in another areaof the home, perhaps with the bedroom door closed, youmay not hear the alarm until it is too late… By the time yourespond, the house is engulfed in fl ames, and deadly toxicsmoke may block your exit path to safety…As a general rule of thumb, alarms need to be installed within10 paces of a fi re to detect the smoke and still give youadequate time to escape. That is why it is so important to haveat least two alarms installed in your home. The best protection is an alarm in every room – excludingthe kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. All alarms should beinterconnected, so that if smoke is detected by one alarm allunits will respond and warn you, no matter where you are inthe house.Whereshould they be installed?Smoke alarm installation locations should be carefully selectedin order to maximise their effectiveness and response time.It is also important to avoid certain areas so as to minimisethe chance of false alarms or nuisance tripping. Follow theseimportant guidelines.Never install a smoke alarm in the kitchen area.Never in a steamy area (eg, bathroom, laundry).Never in a garage or carport.Never in an outside location. It is recommended additional alarms be installed inthe bedrooms, interconnected with those located inpassageways and other parts of the dwelling, to ensurethat you are alerted by the activation of any alarm. If there is no passageway:If bedrooms areaccessed directly fromthe living area, installthe alarm outside eachbedroom 900mmfrom the doorway. Foradditional protection, have interconnectedalarms in the bedroomsas close as practicable tothe centre of each room.If there are bedrooms at both ends of the house:Install interconnected alarms in the passageway toeach of these areas. In passageways, the installationpoint should be at the end closest to the living area andcertainly before the fi rst bedroom is reached so that whenthe alarm sounds, there will be suffi cient time to allowevacuation by normal exit routes.Install a smoke alarm on the ceiling above the head ofthe stairs. If the stairway is enclosed, install the alarmon the ceiling within the enclosure near the exit to theupper storey, and interconnect it with alarms in theupstairs room or passageway.Avoid dead air space:Smoke will not fl ow into ‘dead air spaces’. Avoid the markedregions to ensure optimum response from the alarm.Dead air spaceSuitable smokealarm locationCeiling lineExposed beams300mmmin.500mm max.Did you know? When you are asleep you lose your sense of smell. In the event of a fi re, the smell of smoke will not wake you.Your life depends on your ability to be able to hear theaudible alarm. That’s yet another important reason why you should havemore than one smoke alarm installed in your home, andwhy they should always be interconnected. Why is it importantthat my alarms beinterconnected?Where multiple smoke alarms are installed, they can be linkedtogether or “interconnected” as desired. This ensures that ifone alarm detects smoke, then all interconnected alarms willactivate to sound the warning simultaneously in all locations inthe house. This is especially important in larger, or multi-storey homes, where the alarm that detects the smoke from a fi re (i.e. thealarm closest to the fi re) may simply be too far away foroccupants to hear. By the time you hear the alarm the fi re maybe out of control, and your route to safety may be cut off.Clipsal Firetek ® Smoke Alarms allow up to forty alarms tobe linked, ensuring that you will have the earliest possiblewarning of a fi re danger no matter where you are in the house, and leaving you more time to exit safely.Always avoid “dead air spaces”.The correct selection and placement of your smoke alarms isa critical issue. Thankfully, most electricians have been fullytrained in all aspects of fi re protection, and will be able to giveyou professional advice as a part of your installation.Absolute Minimum Requirement.Photoelectric recommended.BEDROOMLIVINGFAMILYalways installmore than onesmoke alarmPhotoelectric Smoke Alarm, for extra protection.Ionisation Smoke Alarm, for extra protection.STUDY DINING BEDROOMBEDROOM12 755 Series Smoke Alarms 755 Series Smoke Alarms 13

Quick tipsIS IT TIME FOR A NEW BATTERY?Good quality smoke alarms typically operate from themains voltage supply, but they also contain a backupbattery which allows the alarm to remain operational evenwhen the power is cut during a blackout.SICK OF UNWANTED FALSE ALARMS?To ensure the best protection for you and your family, followthese simple handy hints:Choose high quality alarms from a reputable supplier(Clipsal FireTek ® recommended).Install multiple alarms, which are interconnected for thebest protection.Have your alarms installed by a professional installer.Choose the correct alarm type for the location.Test the smoke alarm operation regularly(minimum once per month).TEST BATTERYClean the unit regularly(minimum maintenance once per month).Check battery condition regularly(minimum once per month).ACTION HOW OFTEN? COMMENTSTestBatteryOnce per monthLike all battery operated appliances, your smoke alarm battery must be checked regularly tomake sure that it will still function if there is a fi re.ReplaceBatteryReplaceSmokeAlarmUnitOnce per yearAfter 10 years ofnormal serviceTo test the battery, press and hold the Test Button. This should be done with the mains powerswitched off (turn off the lighting circuit at the switchboard). The alarm should sound indicatingthe battery condition is acceptable. If the unit fails to respond, the battery should be replacedwithout delay. From time to time the smoke alarm battery must be replaced with a new one. Clipsal recommendchoosing a common date that occurs every year and is easy to remember (such as yourbirthday, or at the end of daylight saving time). The battery should also be replaced if the alarmfails to sound when you press and hold the Test button. All smoke alarms (regardless of manufacturer) have a limited service life, normally ten years. After that period, correct operation of the alarm cannot be guaranteed. The entire smoke alarmunit should be replaced with a new one.Clipsal LifesaverAnother Lifesaver initiative from Clipsal AustraliaPatent PendingAustralian Electrical Authority Certifi cateof Suitability for the surface mountsmoke alarm – CS/1245/SAustralian Electrical AuthorityCertifi cate of Suitability for the fl ushmount smoke alarm – CS/1253/SAS3786 Lic 21492SAI GlobalThanks to the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service and Oz Shots for fi re photography.Clipsal Australia Pty LtdA member of Schneider ElectricHead Office33-37 Port Wakefi eld Road,Gepps Cross, South Australia 5094Website clipsal.comContact us clipsal.com/feedbackNational Customer Care Enquiries:1300 2025 25National Customer Care Facsimile:1300 2025 56printed on recycled paperInternational EnquiriesInternational Sales and MarketingEmail export@clipsal.com.auSchneider Electric (NZ) Ltd38 Business Parade South, Highbrook,East Tamaki, Manukau 2013,NEW ZEALANDTelephone + 64 9 829 0490Facsimile + 64 9 829 0491Website www.schneider-electric.co.nzClipsal Customer CareFreephone 0800 652 999Freefax 0800 101 152Email sales@nz.schneider-electric.comWebsite www.clipsal.co.nzYou can fi nd this brochure and many othersonline in PDF format at: clipsal.comFollow the links off the home page or accessthe following page directly:clipsal.com/brochuresClipsal Australia Pty Ltd reserves the right to changespecifi cations, modify designs and dis con tin ue itemswithout incurring obligation and whilst every effort ismade to ensure that descriptions, specifi cations andother in for ma tion in this catalogue are correct, nowarranty is given in respect thereof and the companyshall not be liable for any error therein.© Clipsal Australia Pty LtdC3-011CLIPCOM 19771 November 2009The identified trademarks and copyrights are the property of Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd unless otherwise noted.O/N 19771 November 09
