Lac St-Louis LAKERS… 25 years of success!The Founding of the Lac St-Louis LAKERS Soccer ClubBefore the Ligue Majeure du Québec came into being in 1982, the Lac St-Louis Region wasrepresented by all-star teams in inter-regional and provincial competitions with the players comingfrom inter-city clubs in the Region. The Ligue Majeure was formed in 1982 at the Junior level andteams from Dollard-des-Ormeaux and Beaconsfield represented the Region in the Ligue at thattime, with Dorval joining them in 1983 at the Midget level. These clubs were worthyrepresentatives of the Region but the system of awarding franchises to certain clubs only did notallow the best players from other cities to improve by playing in the Ligue Majeure.In 1984 the Lac St. Louis Region took the ground-breaking decision of forming a club bringingtogether the best players from all its municipalities. That same year the Region enrolled four teams(Bantam, Midget AA, Midget AAA and Junior) in the Ligue Majeure. The official incorporationof the West Island Soccer Club Inc. took place on the 27 th July 1984 – the LAKERS were born!The Board of Directors – Founding MembersWith Joyce Longley as President, the first Board of Directors consisted of Jack Coleman –Director; Peter Czuba – Secretary-Treasurer; Nick Filippone – Head Coach; Colin Needham –Technical Consultant and Fred Norman – Membership Liaison.Club HighlightsSince its founding in 1984 the LAKERS club has matured from its fledgling stage with only fourmale teams (Bantam, Midget AA, Midget AAA and Junior) to being an organization that is one ofthe mainstays of the Ligue de Soccer Élite du Québec. In its first decade the LAKERS added asecond team at each of its juvenile levels and, in 1989, a senior men’s team, thereby promoting thedevelopment of the Lac St. Louis Region’s most talented players who now benefited from havinga proper structure facilitating their access to the provincial and national levels.There were two important developments in 1995-6. First, incorporation under a new name ―LeClub de soccer Lac St. Louis Lakers Inc.‖, thus becoming the official representative of the Region.Secondly, the acquisition of a franchise for a female team at the U-15 level.Accordingly, between 1996 and 2000, the Club added a female team at each level culminatingwith a senior team thereby allowing the girls of the Region to aim for the highest possible playinglevel. A new era was beginning!Then, beginning in 2008, in keeping with the reform of the Competitions sector sponsored by theFédération de soccer du Québec, the Club has seen a reduction in the number of its teams. Lac St-Louis LAKERS… 25 years of success!Achievements – Quebec Cup and Canadian Club ChampionshipsThe LAKERS can be justifiably proud of the results and the tradition they have achieved sincetheir founding in 1984. Forty-three (43) teams have represented Quebec in the Canadian clubChampionships over the past twenty-five years. In so doing they have garnered eight gold medals,seven silver medals and nineteen bronze medals – ―without doubt the best amateur club inCanada‖ according to the report compiled by Mr. Richard Labrom, available on the internet site ofthe Canadian soccer Association (www,canadasoccer.com). In addition the LAKERS have won noless than 56 provincial championships.Over the years the LAKERS Club has acquired a solid reputation and the recognition and respectof other clubs as much for the sporting spirit which its teams have demonstrated as for the resultsthey have achieved at the Canadian Club Championships and at prestigious tournaments in theUnited States and across Canada.The Lakers owe their success to the solid values put in place by their directors, the unconditionalsupport of their parents and the support of the Region and its affiliated clubs. The development ofplayers and coaches constitutes the very essence of the Club. The mission of the LAKERS hasalways been to promote elite soccer by selecting the most promising players from all the affiliatedclubs in its Region. Furthermore the Club put into operation a programme aimed at recruiting thebest coaches for its teams including players who had evolved in the LAKERS during their careers.Accordingly, Kathryn Acton, Kyle Graham, Dean Juliano, Sophie Labrom, Gino Lalli,Philippe Lazure, Adam Mar, Kevin McConnell and David Simon figure among their head coaches.The bringing together of talented players from a number of different municipalities within the LacSt. Louis Region, all of them seeking excellence, allowed the LAKERS to be a worthyrepresentative of the Region. In this respect the LAKERS constituted an important link in thedevelopment of the best players aiming at the highest possible level of competition.The philosophy advocated by the LAKERS and the success they have achieved over the yearsinspired other Regions to establish regional clubs, notably the FC Select Rive-Sud and theDynamo de Quebec who likewise figure among the ten best amateur clubs in Canada over the pasttwenty-five tears.Distinguished Club Personalities through the years1.
