Legacy FundsEach year the Foundation is involvedin distributing thousands of dollars todeserving students in Greater SaskatoonCatholic Schools through the awarding ofscholarships and bursaries. Many of thesescholarships and bursary awards havebeen established by former students andfamilies of the division who wish to givesomething back to the schools in a veryreal and tangible way. Scholarships andbursaries have been established in eitherthe name of a deceased loved onehonouring the work or memory of anindividual or in the name of a company ororganization. They provide anopportunity for students to further theireducation as most of the scholarships andbursaries are awarded to students whoplan to continue their education in a postsecondary setting. The process ofestablishing an award is relatively simplewith a benefactor contacting theFoundation office or local Catholicschool and indicating that they would liketo establish an award. The Foundationwill help the individual create the award, outlining all of the requirements forstudents to follow and will thenadminister the funds donated. TheFoundation becomes the coordinator ofthe award, contacting schools each year todetermine if an award will be given outand explaining the procedure if questionsarise. It is a fairly simple process fordonors and of course, all donations to theFoundation receive charitable tax receiptsand help brighten the lives of childrenenrolled in Greater Saskatoon CatholicSchools. For more information, interestedindividuals can contact the Foundationat 659-7003.Why there is a Greater Saskatoon Catholic SchoolsFoundationThe Greater Saskatoon CatholicSchools Foundation was established in1993 to provide those committed to thepreservation and growth of the Catholicschool in Greater Saskatoon theopportunity to contribute to the division.Though the school division is fullyfunded by the provincial government andlocal tax supporters, the unique feature ofbeing catholic receives no additionalfunds. All funds that make the divisionunique are found in the existing resourcesprovided by the tax base. The Foundationstrives to alleviate that by providingfinancial support to schools and thedivision in general where and when itcan. Our focus is on the Catholicdimension, as our current statement ofpurpose is “to advance the welfare andgood of Greater Saskatoon CatholicSchools by undertaking charitableactivities which promote and enhance thequality of education and religion suppliedto Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.”Each year through the monies raisedby numerous fund raising initiatives, theFoundation supports those activities thatmight otherwise not occur. Through theSchools Win Twice raffle, Fashion Show,Golf tournament, Gala Dinner and privatedonations, the Foundation is able to offsetsome of the costs incurred in deliveringprograms to the students of GreaterSaskatoon Catholic Schools. In 2010, theFoundation was able to contribute$170,000 to support the events, initiativesand projects planned and run by theschools. The largest portion of this comesfrom the win-win nature of the SchoolsWin Twice raffle. 55% of all moneyraised at each school by the raffle stayswith the school, with the remaining 45%used for grants to the schools and tocover the costs incurred by the raffle. Anymoney we can save the schools allowsthem to redirect those dollars back tostudent learning. Many donations are donor directedwith a particular school or program thebeneficiary of the donation. Scholarshipsand bursaries have been established withmoney donated to the Foundation andthen having those monies managed by theFoundation. The Foundation works withdonors to ensure that the true spirit of thedonation is followed. If someone isinterested in helping with the cause ofCatholic education, they can contact theFoundation office. All donations areeligible for a charitable receipt and helpenrich the lives of children throughoutthe division. The Foundation’s school year calendar highlights all theimportant school-related activities and dates. This calendar ismade available to every family associated with the schooldivision at no cost to the family. Copies are being distributedfrom schools and limited amounts are available at your localParish. There are additional copies available at theFoundation office. If you would like a calendar, pleasecontact the office at 659-7003.PAGE 4

The first graduates of Grade 8that year were Karl Nederost, EdwardBaldes, Michael Hall, Charles Woodcock,Cyril Bowdridge, John Shannon, JohnWoodcock, Abner Hohlbein and MargaretRyan. It is staggering to think how thosechildren would have felt going to schoolthat September day so many years ago, knowing that they were the true pioneersof Catholic education in Saskatoon! On June 2,2011 the schooldivisioncelebrated WorldCatholicEducation Daywith a liturgy inall of the schoolsin the morningand a largergathering at St.Pauls’s Cathedralin the afternoon. At the afternoonliturgy, studentspresented soil taken from their individualschools to be joined with the soil of all ofour schools in a symbolic gesture oftogetherness.Fr.
