The letter also demanded that “immediately after the meeting, we reserve the right to make a statement to representatives of the Filipino-Canadian media, the Canadian media and the media in the Philippines regarding the solutions and measures to be taken by your School.” The Marguerite Bourgeoys School Board agreed to have a meeting on Monday, May 15 at 7:00 P.M. However, they did not want to meet with ten members of the Filipino community and asked for fewer people to be present. The results of this meeting were not revealed. Another meeting was scheduled on Saturday, May 20, but it appeared that the School Board did not present a resolution that the Filipino Canadian group could accept. According to Marilyn Birao-Schachter, the Board asked them to prepare their own draft which they will discuss at the next meeting to be held on June 7, Meanwhile, a rally by a Filipino- Canadian group was held on Monday, May 22 and a press release issued which appears on page 9. Goodine Global Perspectives “For the cause that lacks assistance; ‘Gainst the wrongs that need assistance; for the future in the distance; And the good that I can do.” …Motto of the Barbados Advocate Newspaper Barbados was my home after I left the Philippines and before I returned to my original homeland, Canada, and a free press has been a mainstay of civil society, particularly in these three countries. Regarding the role of a free press, the Motto of the Barbados Advocate says it well and this could also be applied to the North American Filipino Star, as we strive for the good that we can do. As I have gone through the process of reinventing myself many times in my own international career I am able to share some thoughts on immigration, migration, and transitions that transcend national boundaries. Today, there are more than 100 million people on the move. The growing numbers include immigrants, transnational workers, migrant workers, guest workers, illegal immigrants, and refugees. People on the move, for whatever reason, imply profound human drama for every individual. Once upon a time, a young woman immigrated to Canada from the Philippines. I know her now as Zenaida Ferry-Kharroubi and I know that she went through some of the very same difficulties that young immigrants to Canada are experiencing today in adapting to a new and confusing culture, strange surroundings, and a workplace that may appear impersonal and uncaring to the newcomer. This particular immigrant reinvented herself and emerged stronger from the experience and established Gilmore College to help so many others to make the transition from New Canadian to full participant in Canadian society. Furthermore, she applies her considerable energy to the tasks of Publisher and Chief Editor of this newspaper in a never ending effort to promote community unity and leadership. The effort is never ending because the people keep coming.
