In the19th and 20th centuries Cuban based artists developed a strong lithographictradition with work known as ‘tobacco stamps’.In ‘Cuban Gold- <strong>Viva</strong> <strong>La</strong> <strong>Reproduccion</strong>’ see Cuban art in its contemporaryinternational context, rather than in an isolated antiquated ghetto. It’scurated by leading Cuban artist Sandra Ramos.What does it mean to be a Cuban artist in 2011? The Cuban art scene hasexpanded beyond the country’s borders. This exhibition is a first opportunity forUK audiences to view and collect prints by emerging Cuban artists at reasonableprices.The story of Cuban art is one of a young country with ancient traditions. power that "present" events in an apparently realistic, neutral, and objective form.The close work-context relationship has means my work has a strong ethicalcomponent with elements of socio-political criticism. The first frame of referencefor my work isCuba, which does imply that the issues I tackle are endemic only to the Island.My method of creation is to recycle collected images from the press, historybooks, and magazines, using them as ‘ready-mades’, quoting them, andparodying them, deconstructing techniques of representation that give to reality asense of the real, using precisely the very discourse that constructs it; and onthe other hand, to carry out "exhumations" of fragments buried by history.Jacqueline Brito was born in Havana, Cuba in 1973. Graduate of theHigh Institute of Visual Arts, and the Cuban University of Artistic SuperiorStudies, since 1996 she has worked as lecturer in the Painting Department ofthe same Institute. Jacqueline is member of the National Union of Artists andWriters (UNEAC).She has had fourteen solo exhibitions in Cuba and United States, andparticipated in more than 500 group shows around the world. In 2009 sherepresented Cuba in the well known french exhibition Bye-Bye Polaroid, Leic’art.Jacqueline art works are in many important collections, galleries and museumsincluding Arizona State University Art Museum, United States; Foundation<strong>Antonio</strong> Perez, Cuenca, Spain; The Collection of the Akron Museum, Ohio; SanFrancisco Art Institute, California; The Rubin Museum of Art, New York;Jablonka Gallery, Cologne , Germany… and many private collections. She hasalso received international prizes including International UNESCOcompetition Painting for peace.Jacqueline Brito’s statement:-Espejismos (Mirages, mirror visions or wishful thinking), is a lithography made in9 colours. This work belongs to a larger series also titled Espejismos, thatincludes oil on canvas and drawings. The subject is a seascape, using the socialview of Cuba seashores, and borders - migration. The ships are Chevroletsconverted into boats looking for the "promised land". The application of layers ofwater based ink, increases an aquatic sense, and the use of gold leaf isthe visual translation that the artist uses for representing the golden dream, theAmerican Dream.The series Pócimas,(dose, draught, or brew) presented by Yamilys BritoJorge, are pieces made in different graphic techniques: the digital print, thecollagraph, and linocut on paper. There are one copy prints, and all of them,have as “point of inspiration” the labels of ancient medicines, from the late 19Century or earliest 20 century. Yamilys takes the purposes of healing, or cure ofthis brews (ex. For purify the blood, or to treat the hair and skin) and the artistcreates new metaphors of the body and soul, as the alchemist producesnew ways to be pure, in good physical and spiritual shape.

In those prints I combine my self-portrait and a XIX centurywood print in order to create a character similar to Alice in Wonderland. This girl,costumed as a Cuban pioneer in a red uniform, has the function of an alter egomaking critical and ironic social comments about the recent history of my country.As a narrative character, she guides the stories and images pointed out by texts,through reflections about Cubans everyday life and concerns. In this series I alsoincorporate classical characters taken from the popular political Cubancaricatures, as Liborio and Abela’s Foul, which are symbols of Cuban peopleduring the beginning of the XX Century and Neo-colonial period.4. About londonprintstudiolondonprintstudio was first established in 1974, initially working under the nameof Paddington Printshop. It worked with the local community on various causes,as well as producing posters and designs for arts and music events. In theprocess, the studio became involved in many of the well known causes of theperiod and established a new model of community-based art practice that wasreplicated in cities across the UK. londonprintstudio now has charity status, andpeople using the studio range from students and community organisations tomajor international artists and arts institutions. londonprintstudio runs a galleryand an open resource providing access to traditional printmaking and digitalmedia. The studio also runs a Masters programme in Printmaking andProfessional Practice in partnership with the Bucks New University.
