As the most recent monthlyf<strong>in</strong>alists of the ‘Be a <strong>Changi</strong> Millionaire’Draw, they each stand a one-<strong>in</strong>-sixchance of receiv<strong>in</strong>g a giant w<strong>in</strong>dfall –the grand prize of S$1 million.In August, Mr Loh Kee Peng, a39-year-old sales manager, becamethe first S<strong>in</strong>gaporean to be pickedas a monthly w<strong>in</strong>ner of the Draw.His w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g token was a romanticwedd<strong>in</strong>g anniversary gift to his wife– a S$5,000 plat<strong>in</strong>um diamond r<strong>in</strong>ghe purchased from Tiffany & Co. atTerm<strong>in</strong>al 2, while en route to HongKong for a bus<strong>in</strong>ess trip followed bya holiday with his family to celebratethe anniversary.Amazed by his unbelievable stroke ofgood luck, Mr Loh said it never crossedhis m<strong>in</strong>d that he could be the w<strong>in</strong>ner.Asked how he <strong>in</strong>tends to spend theGrand Prize of S$1 million if he w<strong>in</strong>s,Mr Loh replied, “It is my dream tobe debt free, so the bulk of the prizemoney will go towards the repaymentof my hous<strong>in</strong>g loan. A portion will alsobe donated to charity, while some willbe spent on pamper<strong>in</strong>g my family with anice holiday, good d<strong>in</strong>ner and perhapsmore pretty gifts from Tiffany – whichhas brought me good luck!”In September, yet another luckyS<strong>in</strong>gaporean was picked as themonthly f<strong>in</strong>alist of the Draw. Mr NgEng S<strong>in</strong>, a 43-year-old bus<strong>in</strong>essdevelopment manager, had purchasedtwo Lego toy sets for his sons agedseven and eight when he was at<strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> with his family. Thepurchases were made at KidzTime!at Term<strong>in</strong>al 3 when the Ng familywere on their way to Penang to visitrelatives and to celebrate theyounger boy’s birthday.Not hav<strong>in</strong>g had much luck with luckydraws or contests previously, Mr Ngsaid he was “surpris<strong>in</strong>gly shockedand happy” when first <strong>in</strong>formedabout the w<strong>in</strong>. “I feel that my luckystar is sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on me, be<strong>in</strong>g oneof the six f<strong>in</strong>alists. This is the firsttime I’ve come so close to w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gS$1 million,” he said. <strong>Changi</strong> ConnectionTwo NewAirl<strong>in</strong>esJo<strong>in</strong><strong>Changi</strong>Family<strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> welcomed two new airl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> October andNovember – Airphil Express from the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es and Malaysia’sBerjaya Air. The new airl<strong>in</strong>es’ operations enhance <strong>Changi</strong>’sconnectivity and improve accessibility to their dest<strong>in</strong>ations.Airphil, which operates from Term<strong>in</strong>al 2, commenced daily servicesbetween S<strong>in</strong>gapore and Manila on 27 October 2010. S<strong>in</strong>gaporeis the carrier’s first <strong>in</strong>ternational dest<strong>in</strong>ation. From 1 December,Airphil added another dest<strong>in</strong>ation, Cebu, also with a daily service.With Airphil’s operations, six carriers now fly between S<strong>in</strong>gaporeand the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es.On 1 November, Berjaya commenced scheduled operations at theBudget Term<strong>in</strong>al. Berjaya previously operated chartered flightsfrom Seletar <strong>Airport</strong>. The carrier operates ten flights a week to andfrom Tioman. From March 2011, Berjaya will <strong>in</strong>crease frequenciesto 28 weekly flights, 14 each to and from the resort islands ofTioman and Redang. For Berjaya, their scheduled flights from the BudgetTerm<strong>in</strong>al will enhance the travel experience for its passengers asthey will enjoy the ease and convenience of connect<strong>in</strong>g betweenflights as well as the use of <strong>Changi</strong>’s facilities and amenities.”More Flightsto Tokyo<strong>Changi</strong>’sFirst SouthAmerican L<strong>in</strong>kTravellers now enjoy more options and greater conveniencewhen they travel to the Japanese capital. On 31 October,three airl<strong>in</strong>es commenced operations to Tokyo’s Haneda<strong>Airport</strong>. The four daily flights to Haneda by All Nippon Airways,Japan Airl<strong>in</strong>es and S<strong>in</strong>gapore Airl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>crease the number offlights to Tokyo (Haneda and Narita <strong>Airport</strong>s) from eight to 11flights each day.Fly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to Haneda, located conveniently 20km from the citycentre, means that travellers will have unprecedented accessto downtown Tokyo. With the commencement of <strong>in</strong>ternationalflights to Haneda, passengers travell<strong>in</strong>g onward to otherJapanese cities will no longer need to make a one-hour transferfrom Narita <strong>Airport</strong> to Haneda, sav<strong>in</strong>g them both time and money.Come March 2011, <strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> will be directly l<strong>in</strong>ked tothe South American cont<strong>in</strong>ent for the first time. S<strong>in</strong>gaporeAirl<strong>in</strong>es will commence operations to Brazil’s largest city, SaoPaulo, via thrice-weekly flights on the S<strong>in</strong>gapore-Barcelona-Sao Paolo route.Sao Paulo is widely recognised as an arts and enterta<strong>in</strong>mentcentre, as well as an <strong>in</strong>fluential player <strong>in</strong> the areas ofcommerce and f<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America. The new l<strong>in</strong>k willboost ties between S<strong>in</strong>gapore and Brazil and pave the wayfor enhanced trade, tourism and travel l<strong>in</strong>ks between Asia andSouth America.

When asked about<strong>Changi</strong>’s social media efforts, he said: “Companies with a socialfront-end need to show a personal touch and <strong>Changi</strong> has done amarvelous job <strong>in</strong> communicat<strong>in</strong>g with its stakeholders.”Video clips that were produced to promote the launch of the<strong>Changi</strong> Millionaire Draw and the Slide@T3, the world’s tallest <strong>in</strong>an airport, have been popular on YouTube, generat<strong>in</strong>g more than120,000 views each <strong>in</strong> a matter of months. “The clips were cool!By shar<strong>in</strong>g YouTube videos to promote events and new facilities tothe public, <strong>Changi</strong> allowed me to effectively visualise the productand place-of-<strong>in</strong>terest that eventually enhanced my actual airportexperience,” Andy added.With the rapid spike <strong>in</strong> connectivity and technologicaldevelopments, CAG will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to build on its social mediaefforts to reach out digitally and connect with its many customersall over the world.


<strong>Changi</strong> ConnectionCover Story<strong>Changi</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Saudi</strong> <strong>Arabia</strong>Passengers mak<strong>in</strong>g their way to the Departure Hall from the ma<strong>in</strong> concourse at KFIAIn the eastern part of <strong>Saudi</strong> <strong>Arabia</strong>, wherethe oil capital of Dammam sits, is a slice of<strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>. S<strong>in</strong>ce November 2008,<strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>s International (CAI) has hada resident team of airport specialists comanag<strong>in</strong>gK<strong>in</strong>g Fahd International <strong>Airport</strong>(KFIA) <strong>in</strong> Dammam, as part of CAI’s six-yearoperations management contract with the<strong>Saudi</strong> General Authority of Civil Aviation(GACA). Valued at S$65 million, theproject is the largest ever won by CAI.At 780 km 2 , KFIA has a land bank thatis larger than the size of S<strong>in</strong>gapore. Theairport serves a region of four million, withdomestic and <strong>in</strong>ternational flights at itsPassenger Term<strong>in</strong>al and Royal Term<strong>in</strong>al. In2009, KFIA handled 4.43 million passengermovements, 78,000 tonnes of cargo and49,000 aircraft movements. KFIA is servedby some 30 airl<strong>in</strong>es operat<strong>in</strong>g more than1,000 weekly flights to over 55 cities.<strong>Changi</strong>’s contributionsThe six-member <strong>Changi</strong> team <strong>in</strong> Dammamhas been work<strong>in</strong>g alongside <strong>Saudi</strong> staffto deliver improvements to the airport and<strong>in</strong>troduce best practices and processes, toprepare for KFIA’s eventual corporatisation.The CAI resident team is assisted byvisit<strong>in</strong>g experts from CAG and CAI onshort-term assignments.On the operations front, the CAI teamhas led projects to improve the term<strong>in</strong>al’sfacilities and services. They <strong>in</strong>clude the<strong>in</strong>troduction of smok<strong>in</strong>g rooms, children’splay areas, improved seat<strong>in</strong>g and TVview<strong>in</strong>g areas. The <strong>Changi</strong> team has alsohelped to resolve issues such as alleviat<strong>in</strong>gcongestion problems at KFIA’s kerbside.Besides hardware, CAI has also helpedto improve ‘heartware’ <strong>in</strong> the form ofservice quality. Service tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g has beenconducted for KFIA staff. New qualityservice <strong>in</strong>itiatives and refund policies havealso been <strong>in</strong>stituted at retail outlets at KFIA.At the organisational level, CAI has been<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> formulat<strong>in</strong>g KFIA’s new vision,mission and values, to align the airport’sfocus and resources with GACA’s goalsand strategic directions. It has alsohelped to develop <strong>in</strong>itiatives to grownon-aeronautical revenue and improveaeronautical revenue collection. The teamhas <strong>in</strong>troduced new F&B outlets, with plansto br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> more retail and F&B shops <strong>in</strong> theyears ahead.KFIA’s growthS<strong>in</strong>ce the <strong>Changi</strong> team came on board,KFIA has grown its traffic and routes,perform<strong>in</strong>g well compared to regionalpeers like Bahra<strong>in</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>. In 2009,passenger traffic at KFIA grew 8.2%, afaster pace compared to Bahra<strong>in</strong>’s 3.4%.Seven new airl<strong>in</strong>es have startedoperations at KFIA s<strong>in</strong>ce the CAI team’sdeployment, represent<strong>in</strong>g a 21% <strong>in</strong>crease<strong>in</strong> the number of airl<strong>in</strong>es operat<strong>in</strong>g at KFIA.The efforts have not gone unnoticed,with KFIA bagg<strong>in</strong>g the award for theMiddle East category <strong>in</strong> the 2010 Routes<strong>Airport</strong> Market<strong>in</strong>g Awards – Asia. KFIAalso received an Honourable Mention atthe 2010 IATA Eagle Awards for its lowaeronautical charges and improvement<strong>in</strong> product offer<strong>in</strong>gs to airl<strong>in</strong>es andpassengers.Look<strong>in</strong>g ahead“The <strong>Changi</strong> team <strong>in</strong> Dammam hasperformed well over the last two years. <strong>Changi</strong> ConnectionTowardsa Greener<strong>Changi</strong><strong>Airport</strong>In conjunction with Clean and GreenS<strong>in</strong>gapore 2010, CAG launched the‘<strong>Changi</strong> Goes Green’ environmentalroadshow on 8 November and announcedthe establishment of a set of targetsto reduce energy use and <strong>in</strong>crease theproportion of recycled water used at<strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>.Conserv<strong>in</strong>g energyEven with round the clock operationsand <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g air traffic at <strong>Changi</strong>, CAGcont<strong>in</strong>ues to put <strong>in</strong> a conscious effortto conserve energy. Some <strong>in</strong>itiativesimplemented so far <strong>in</strong>clude dimm<strong>in</strong>g lightsat airport term<strong>in</strong>als by as much as 50%dur<strong>in</strong>g off-peak hours, us<strong>in</strong>g natural light<strong>in</strong>gwhere possible, and <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g motionsensors <strong>in</strong> areas such as toilets and officesto conserve electricity.At present, <strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>’s annual term<strong>in</strong>albuild<strong>in</strong>g electricity consumption is about450 million kilowatt hour (kWh). CAGhas established an energy target thatwill enable <strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> to cont<strong>in</strong>ueto provide a first-class experience for itsusers <strong>in</strong> a susta<strong>in</strong>able and environmentallyfriendlymanner. This target will see<strong>Changi</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g its term<strong>in</strong>al build<strong>in</strong>gs’electricity usage by about 13.5 million kWh,generat<strong>in</strong>g sav<strong>in</strong>gs of about S$2.4 millionover the next three years.Recycl<strong>in</strong>g waterCurrently, already less than half of <strong>Changi</strong><strong>Airport</strong>’s water usage comes from potablesources. Recycled water from ra<strong>in</strong>water isused for irrigat<strong>in</strong>g plants at <strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>’snursery and external landscape areas, whileNEWater is used for airport fire-fight<strong>in</strong>g,sanitation and cool<strong>in</strong>g of air condition<strong>in</strong>gchillers. Throughconservation efforts by National Parksand the Nature Society, sapl<strong>in</strong>gs of the<strong>Changi</strong> Tree can be found <strong>in</strong> the S<strong>in</strong>gaporeZoological Gardens, Botanic Gardens and<strong>Changi</strong> Museum.Another first for CAG dur<strong>in</strong>g the ‘<strong>Changi</strong>Goes Green’ week was the first-ever CAGCorporate Recycl<strong>in</strong>g Day. A stagger<strong>in</strong>g3,777 kg of recycled waste was collected,thanks to the efforts of CAG staff.To close the week, staff of CAG as well asits airport partners participated <strong>in</strong> the firstever ‘<strong>Changi</strong> Green Amaz<strong>in</strong>g Race’, whichsaw them go<strong>in</strong>g on a eco-challenge around<strong>Changi</strong>’s four term<strong>in</strong>als. <strong>Changi</strong> ConnectionCAG CEO Lee Seow Hiang officiat<strong>in</strong>g at theVessels Commission<strong>in</strong>g CeremonyThe new hovercraft replaces AES’ firsthovercraft acquired <strong>in</strong> 1994<strong>Changi</strong> <strong>Airport</strong>surpassed its10 million,20 million and30 millionpassengers-a-yearmilestones<strong>in</strong> 1986, 1994and 2004respectively.Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g SeaRescueCapabilitiesTwo new state-of-the-art sea rescue vessels are now <strong>in</strong> thedocks of CAG’s <strong>Airport</strong> Emergency Services’ (AES) SeaRescue Base (SRB). The new arrivals – a hovercraft and awater-jet catamaran command boat – notch up SRB’s searescue capability to rescue the maximum number of passengersonboard the largest aircraft type today – the Airbus 380.The newly commissioned hovercraft will replace AES’ firsthovercraft which was acquired <strong>in</strong> 1994. It has a top speedof 57 knots, which is equivalent to 105km/h.
