KHC contd. from page 4The project has also used more than 30 tonnes of stainless steelmaterial for base structure such as brackets, purlins, cleats, clampsetc. Mill finished stainless steel material of various thicknesses, asstipulated by the structural design has been used. All stainless steelanchor fasteners have been supplied by M/s Hilti India.Joints and Joint Detailing: Since metal is impervious to water, panel joint design is critical to the water tightness of the system. Ametal panel building typically has an extensive number of joints. How the joints perform is a factor of the panel design andconstruction. In this project a system similar to the rain screen ordrainage system has been used with a standing seam for bothperformance characteristics and the aesthetic criteria of unsealedjoints.Compared to concrete or masonry cladding elements, metal panelsystems have higher coefficients of expansion for thermal movement.Designers of metal panel systems need to calculate the expectedmovement of metal panels due to changes of temperature.also establish the panel performance criteria. Performance criterianeeded include wind loading, seismic design criteria, deflectioncriteria, air infiltration criteria, thermal movement criteria, performance testing criteria, insulation criteria and performancecriteria for air and moisture barrier or rain screen.M/s Moshe Safdie Associates from USA- the clients’ architects, theirIndian counterpart M/s Ashok Dhawan, M/s L & T Limited, the Indianmultinational in construction industry and M/s Chadwick TechnologyPty Ltd, Australia, the world renowned roofing specialists – Allcolossal brains in the respective fields have joined together in thisprojects. That Sreevatsa Stainless Steel Fabricators (P) Ltd, fromthe southern tip of this great country, also had a substantial role toplay in this prestigious heritage project is due to the cooperationextended to us by the above great players and not the least TheAnandpur Sahib Foundation, Govt. of Punjab. An artist’s impression of the Khalsa Heritage ComplexCloser view of the stainless steel roofing of the auditoriumInsulation: With the exception of insulated metal panels, metalpanels do not typically provide any insulation value to wall systems. When non-insulated metal panels are used, the insulation is typicallyprovided. In this project rock wool insulation of 75 mm thicknesshas been provided.Air and Moisture Barrier: While face sealed systems do not requirean air and moisture barrier, drainage and rain-screen metal paneltypically require a secondary air and moisture barrier system. Theselection of the air and moisture barrier is an important decisionthat needs to be customized to the specific nature of the metal panelsystem, the exterior sheathing, geometry, and HVAC requirementsof the building. This project has a layer of EPDM placed immediatelybelow the roof panels to act as the second defence of water proofingand a layer of Bituthene Membrane, supplied by M/s W.R. Graceand Co. This acts as an air vapour barrier.Metal Panel DesignAs part of the design, the architects had selected a type of metalpanel system and provided architectural details that depict therelationship of the metal panel system to the adjacent buildingsystems. The designers M/s Chadwick Technology Pty Ltd, Australia haveselected the types of metal panels that will meet design criteria andWork in progress at the main structure at KHCContact : Mr CC Sampath, Sreevatsa Stainless Steel Fabricators(P) Ltd, 1/376 Mugaliwakkam, Porur, Chennai 600 017.Tel : +91-44-22523469 , +91-44-22523479,Fax: +91-44-22523489,+91-44-28143552,Email: sreevatsa.stainless@gmail.com,Web: www.sreevatsastainless.comSTAINLESS INDIA / VOL.12, NO.4/ 5
