He gained aWelsh International vest for a track walk.Although walking was his main discipline,he also took part in running events. I firstmet him in a 10 miles road run organisedby RAF Bridgnorth. He helped found Bromsgrove AC in theearly 1960's. (Maurice Doogan, theBMAF T&F supremo was also an earlymember.) Later he was part ofBromsgrove and Redditch AC when thetwo clubs merged. He then formed a breakthrough group,Nomads Walking Club, before in lateryears returning to B&R. He was mainlyresponsible for developing many youngwalkers, particularly with Nomadssquads. During this time the ReverendRoy Lodge (former international) was oneof his prominent competitors. Theybecame close friends and Roy gave oneof the readings at the funeral.Terry carried on competing as a veteranand gained many successes in World

and European Masters events. He was veryproud of his medals!A successful self-made businessman, hewill be remembered as an enthusiasticathlete, coach and organiser as well as areal character, not forgetting his famouswhiskers! We offer our sincere condolences to his wifeand family.Denis Withers 1927-2009From Eric HorwillMasters Athletics has lost one of it's bestknown and popular stalwarts who wasinvolved as a successful competitve athlete,a technical official, an administrator, as wellas an event organiser. As an athlete, Denis began his career as asprinter with Smethwick Harriers. Hecompeted for Harborne Harriers, HalesowenAC (he was a life member), and BirchfieldHarriers, as well as Midland Veterans AC.He gradually converted to race walking andcompeted regularly until about December2006. His achievements in European andWorld Masters Championships were quitememorable. As an organiser he masterminded not onlymany race walking events, but was heavilyinvolved in the BMAF Road Relay RunningChampionships held regularly in SuttonPark. And he still found time to officiate regularlyas a qualified field official. He was also formany years a keen member of the MVACcommittee.Denis, despite his 80+ years always lookeda lot younger than many of hiscontemporaries. He enjoyed good healthuntil the final 2 years. Away from athleticshe was a keen family man with a wide rangeof interests, including gardening, music, politics, travelling, and adult learning. He is survived by his wife Yvonne whoshared many of his interests, includingathletics. She also has competedsuccessfully in many European andWorld events. We offer our sincerecondolences to Yvonne and all theirfamily.Denis passed away in late December.Despite severe weather and deep snow, there was a huge turnout at the funeral, demonstrating how much he will bemissed by all of us.Bill Maxwell R.I.P.Bill was known to many as he was a truecharacter. Bill, who died age 76, walkedfor the now defunct Leyland Motors ACand when that folded he donned the vestof Lancashire WC. He qualified asCenturion 509 in 1973 at the toughBristol 100 Miles (20.52.29) and achievedthat feat 4 more times. He travelled allover and came south with LeylandMotors to race against Ford & VaxhallMotors in British IndustriesChampionship races organised by PatFurey and staged in Luton by the lateJohn Telford. We express condolence tohis family.Reverend David Christie-Murray R.I.P.The Reverend David Christie-Murray(SWC & The Centurions) a former winnerof the Enfield Open 7 Miles Walk hasdied at the age of 96. He scored two wartimevictories in 1940 and 41 with timesof 55:25 and 55:05 and attended theopen at Donkey Lane a few years ago.FeaturesParish Walk Preview 2010by Dave Mackey1,710 nervous walkers awaiting the gunat 8am on June 26th , preparing to takeon 85 miles of the most picturesque, demanding and hilly road race courses in

the world. Fantasy? No, this is the Isle ofMan Parish Walk, one of the most gruellingraces in the walking calendar. The eventhas gripped the island over the past 10years and its high profile has ensured arecord entry for this year.Having been sponsored by Clerical Medicalfor the past 20 years, the race is being rununder their Scottish Widows banner thisyear. This also means that as a sponsor ofLondon 2012, they have arranged for anOlympic ambassador to start and competein the walk this year - former World andOlympic 400m silver medallist Roger Blackwill be amongst the throngs on the start line. Before you get too excited, he will not beentertaining any thoughts of finishing therace! After the worst winter on the island for 30years, thoughts have come round to thisunique event. It has certainly become "thething to do", a challenge of both physicaland mental strength and endurance. The race starts in the island's capitalDouglas and from there heads south to PortErin, and then turns towards Peel on thewest coast and then finally to Ramsey in thenorth before heading back towards Douglas. The leaders will be finished in the dark onDouglas Promenade at roughly 11pm, butthe tail of the field will still be around to seethe sun come up at 8am, the 24 hour timelimit! Organisation of the event is run on amilitary scale and year on year, improvements are made for the benefit of allcompetitors. The main advance has seenthe use of electronic timing introduced in2007 which not only gives each walker splittimes for each church but also the ability fornon competitors to watch the progress inreal time via text message and on thewebsite. As usual, predicting the outcome of the raceis not easy as nothing can be taken forgranted over the distance. Winner of the lasttwo years, Jock Waddington is going for arare hat-trick achieved only twice before inthe race's 40 year history (John Cannell 81-83 and Willie Corkill 85-87) so statisticallyit's not easy for him. Despite the potentialabsence of record holder Sean Hands(14hrs 47min in 2006) due to injury, opposition will be tough with five timeswinner Robbie Callister back for anothercrack at what would be a record equalling6th victory. Also poised to go well are topten UK ranked 20k walker MichaelGeorge, last year's third Mark Hempsalland top newcomer from 2009 VinnyLynch. Former 100 mile winner PeterRyan is heading up a group from IlfordAC and it will be interesting to see howhe goes on his first attempt, given hisobvious pedigree. Even the editor of thismagazine is making the pilgrimage, intending to walk a portion of thecourse!!!What is definite is that there will be a newname on the ladies trophy this year, withthe retirement of multiple winner SueBiggart and the non-participation of lastyear's winner and record holder JaniceQuirk. In a hard race in which a few couldsurprise, Maureen Moffat and ShirleyGage will be among the favourites.Entries have now closed for this year butre-open for 2011 on December 1st. Itreally is something to behold, a road raceso well organised, so brilliantlypatronised and so cherished by us all.Everyone should do this at least onceand we look forward to seeing you nextyear on the beautiful Isle of Man whereyou can say "I did it!"UKA National Centre for RaceWalking: Year 1 - into the Year of theCoachBy Andi DrakeThe UKA National Centre for RaceWalking opened in April 2009 and at oneyear in it is timely to reflect on theposition of the Centre. The athletescurrently training at the Centre are*:Johanna Jackson, Brendan Boyce (IRL),Tom Bosworth, Kat Granger, Alex Wright(all Leeds Met. Carnegie); Mark O'Kane

(Leeds University); Lauren Whelan (LeedsCity College); Nathan Duncan(Cleethorpes); Gabrielle Terry (Kingstonupon Hull); Jamie Higgins (Leeds City AC);and on a 12 month exchange RachaelTeddy (AUS). We have hosted severalathletes for training camps and will welcomemembers of the Australian World Cup Teamfor a five week camp immediately followingthe World Cup. We continue to recruit for2010 entry and expect to add more athletesin September subject to successfulexamination results! We are delighted to have won both men'sand women's 2010 National 20 kmChampions in April with Tom Bosworth andJohanna Jackson. Our strategies andobjectives relate to developing talenttowards championship level competition.Johanna Jackson has become the firstBritish athlete to place on the podium in anIAAF Challenge placing 3rd in Sesto SanGiovanni on May 1st. Brendan Boyce (IRL)has achieved an IAAF qualifying time for the2011 World Athletics Championships 50 kmfollowing his debut recently in Dudince,Slovakia in March. 19 year old Alex Wrightrecorded 1 h 30 min for his debut 20 km inSesto San Giovanni and Tom Bosworth wonhis first ever national title on his debut 20km: both athletes straight from the juniorranks in 2009. In the successes of Johanna,Brendan, Alex and Tom we can see thetalent development process taking shape. We have also hosted race walk specificelements of the England Athletics NationalCoach Development Programme andcontinue this work with EA National CoachMentor Martin Rush. Moreover we lookforward to sharing our work and welcomingdelegates from around the World and theUK at the forthcoming 2010 EuropeanAthletics Coaching Summit Series when wehost the 1st European Race WalkingConference between 5th and 7th ofNovember. As Director of Race Walking I head up theprogramme but creating a performanceenvironment relies on a team ofprofessionals and the progression of theathletes has been strongly supported bybiomechanist Brian Hanley;physiotherapists from the CarnegieSports Physiotherapy Clinic, led byAlison Rose; nutritionist Louise Sutton;physiologists and psychologists fromCarnegie Sports Performance; andsupport coaching from Andy Henderson(strength & conditioning and endurancetraining) and Ian Richards. Thesecolleagues have got to know the athletesand as they develop their understandingof the race walking events their valuegrows! This set up provides the Carnegieathletes with quality coaching for alltraining sessions structured using sportscience and sport medicine support.Working so closely with the athletesallows constant monitoring of theirhealth/fitness/weakness status.Talent development goes beyond puttingin the kilometres in training as we seek todevelop all aspects of the performanceprocess. One of the principle areas ofwork has been conditioning in order toavoid injury and be ready to tolerateincreasing training workloads. This hasbeen an issue for some of the athletesand leads me to challenge our race walkcoaching knowledge and skills. Thephysiotherapy support required by theathletes at the Centre can be dividedequally between those who specialisedlate and those who specialised early: thelate specialisation group have utilised sixtimes less physiotherapy than the earlyspecialisation group in the periodSeptember 2009 to March 2010! Theathletes who specialised in race walkinglate (i.e. mid-teenage years) have a baseof athletic skills and competencies from arange of track & field events and othersports that provides a conditioning baseto tolerate training loads. The earlyspecialisation group have done little elseother than race walk since their earlyteenage years or younger... The supportwe are able to provide is effectivelyreducing the injury rate but we areengaging in remedial work that as agroup of professionals we feel is part of

athlete preparation from (at least) the earlyteenage years - this is the most importantstage of athletic preparation and there isevidence to support this being a make orbreak time in the development of the athlete(Robertson & Hamilton, 2008). Racewalkers who specialise early risk notdeveloping basic athletic movement skills, leading to injury from their one-sidedpreparation. Moreover it is evidenced thatmany of our younger age group athleteswho have specialised early completeinappropriate (too low) training loads, i.e.doublydisadvantaging them to theextent thatthey may beunable toreach theirpotential. Along-termathletedevelopmentmodel should consider appropriate activitiesfor the career stage of the athlete; andorganise these to suit the appropriate stagein the training/competition year througheach day's activities.Photo: Andi DrakeOur coaching challenge is thus twofold -firstly where we have coaches there areathletes. More coaches should thereforeequal more athletes so I would encouragemany of our veteran athletes to competeless and coach more, seeking a UKAthletics coaching licence to help bring newtalent into the race walk events. Secondly Iwould encourage our existing coachingtalent to continue developing theirknowledge and skills to challenge andsupport young race walkers effectively, e.g.through development of wider athleticmovement skills; and not to be afraid ofencouraging them to take part in a range oftrack & field events and sports as part oftheir all round development. It has been apositive and productive process workingwith colleagues on the England AthleticsCoach Development Mentoring Programmerecently sharing our ideas and workingtogether on tools to support these ideas.UK Athletics have designated 2010 asYear of the Coach* so let's get more ofus involved in coaching and improvingthe depth of our talent pool.Further reading: Robertson, S., Hamilton,A. No animal, plant-life or humanbeings can exist without them. At anyminute millions of microscopic enzymes arepowering throughout your body causingreactions to occur. You would be unable tobreathe, hold and turn the pages of RaceWalking Record to find how your comrades -and the competition (!) did; unable to eat, taste the food on your plate, drive, work orre-boot the computer. You would havereturned to the soil and likely fertilising thenext crop generation, if not for enzymes.More than 3,000 types of enzymes areknown to proliferate the human body, effecting everything from renewal, digestion, maintenance and protection. Enzymesconstantly change and renew themselves.Enzymes are protein-based particles foundin every living cell of everything which isalive, or becomes alive. They are truly thepower houses of each and every cell.Basically they either initiate chemicalreactions or speed them up. Consider thesimple act of turning milk into yoghurt, cabbage into sauerkraut, grapes into wine, etc. Enzymes were definitely at work inthese processes! All life processes, whether breathing, thinking, digestion, etc is a complexseries of chemical reactions known asmetabolism. There are actually two partsto metabolism known as anabolism andcatabolism: Anabolism is any type ofprocess in which simpler substances areduly combined to form something morecomplex (muscle-building for instance)and catabolism is basically any processin which living cells break downsubstances into simpler particles(digestion for instance).Obviously, in my profession, enzymesresponsible for digestion featureenormously - and those accountable forhealing - being of particular, personalimportance following my surgeries - areabsolutely vital to me at present. The sum total of anabolism andcatabolism is metabolism. Enzymes arethe catalysts that make the chemicalreactions possible.Above and beyond enzymes' metabolicroles - they are also food potentiators. Alledible foodstuffs have potential nutrientswhich need 'unlocking' in a way ourbodies can make use of them. For as long as out bodies can produceenzymes, we thrive. However, ourbodies' production slows dramaticallywith age, illness, injury - sporting or not,and our old enemy - stress. If our bodiescannot produce them sufficientlyeffectively, or produce them with anoptimal activity level, then enzymes mustbe acquired in supplemental form - thatwill be either pills or fermented orsprouted live food. No other form isadequate. Each of the 3,000 plus types of enzymesperform their work differently. Someenzymes are secreted in active formothers - such as those involved indigestion - are secreted in an inactiveform, requiring co-factor enzymes tomake them ready to do their work.

How do you know if you are digestiveenzyme-deficient? Simply speaking you willsuffer from indigestion, flatulence, gas, bloating, illness etc. Illness is likely the mostobvious signal that your enzymes arerunning low. As l previously said, enzymes'make you work', so any illness, or diseaseprocess, such as cardiovascular, degenerative disease such as cancer or aslow recovery rate after an injury/surgery etcare indications that your body's enzymesare not of optimal content. My surgeon just said that he is amazed withmy exceptional healing ability from the triplesurgeries effected almost twelve weeks agocompared to 'normal' people. Obviouslygrateful for being 'abnormal' - my regime ofsprouted/living foods is definitelyresponsible for a much sort-after conclusion. As athletes we need to supply our bodieswith an optimal amount of live, activeenzymes. These can be supplied in abundance bysprouting your food, using microbialfermentations and in concentrated plantextracts called 'functional' foodstuffs.Animal-based enzymes are usuallyextracted from pig or calf pancreas. A battle between TommyTaylor and Scott Davis lasting the whole

ace saw both of them get big PB's, withScott getting 90th place on the UK all-timelist, and Tommy just beating him and goingto number 82. The ladies race was verycompetitive, with two Chinese girls and oneother just pulling away at the end to beat JoJackson into 4th. However, although shemissed the podium she retains the courserecord which she set last year when winningthe prestigious event. A big PB from FionaMcGorum saw her go to 41 on the UK alltimelist.Souvenir Swiss penknives were presentedto every competitor, but as many peoplefrom England had travelled via Ryanairwithout checked in luggage (for around £30return), knives could not be taken back. However, Peter Marlowe kindly offered totransport them and ended up taking a largebag of knives through the airport on his wayback to England. Those returning to the UKimmediately after the race enjoyed thesunshine beside the scenic lake, surrounded by snow capped mountains, in atown famous for it's hospitality towards racewalking. Those who stayed afterwards wereleft to find their own food in the evening aftera mixup at the official hotel. The Greek teamdecided to stay in the hotel bar, the Chineseteam went to a pizza restaurant, the Czechsand Brits went to Burger King, and theRussian walkers settled for many cans ofbeer and entertained the town with theirsinging for several hours! Race walkers whovisit Lugano always desire to return.20km Men1 Alex Schwazer ITA 1:18:24 NR2 Robert Heffernan IRL 1:20:453 Grzegorz Sudol POL 1:20:50 PB4 Aleksandr Yargunkin RUS 1:20:555 Chen Ding CHN 1:22:036 Wang Zhen CHN 1:22:03 PB7 Nazar Kovalenko UKR 1:22:23 PB8 Jean-Jacques Nkouloukidi ITA 1:22:339 Marco De Luca ITA 1:22:38 PB10 Andrei Talashka BLR 1:23:5311 Aleksey Khimin RUS 1:23:56 PB12 Sérgio Vieira POR 1:24:1013 Colin Griffin IRL 1:24:4514 Michael Doyle IRL 1:27:55 PB15 Andrei Stsepanchuk BLR 1:28:1316 Brendan Boyce IRL 1:28:38 PB17 Pasquale Sabino ITA 1:29:0218 Carl Dohmann GER 1:29:47 PB19 Carlo Alberto De Casa ITA 1:29:56PB20 Darrell Stone GBR 1:30:0221 Alessio Wruss ITA 1:30:41 PB22 Dzianis Krauchuk BLR 1:30:4423 Ruggero D'Ascanio ITA 1:30:5624 Karel Ketner CZE 1:32:25 PB25 Olivier Colette BEL 1:33:00 PB26 Thomas Taylor GBR 1:33:08 PB27 Scott Davis GBR 1:33:26 PB28 Vito Zanni ITA 1:33:43 PB29 Jacques Van Bremen NED 1:34:28PB30 Jakub Zajíc CZE 1:35:00 PB31 Ivan Mobilia ITA 1:38:07 PB32 Bachisio Faedda ITA 1:39:02 PB33 Bruno Morotti ITA 1:40:03 PB34 Graziano Morotti ITA 1:40:0435 Jérome Caprice MRI 1:40:21 PB36 Miguel Angel Blanco ESP 1:40:5337 Lukáš Pazdera CZE 1:45:5438 Franco Venturi ITA 1:54:0039 J. 7km she had to hold back in the fear ofelimination. After the race she said “this is amajor breakthrough for me to make thepodium in an IAAF Challenge event. I amdisappointed though with the time as I hadto hold back after receiving my second redcard and I know there is much more in thetank”.Before this event became an IAAFChallenge, in 1981 Carol Tyson and IreneBatemen were 1st & 2nd with Irene 2ndagain in 1983 both races over 5k. This wasthe last time a British athlete made thepodium in this competition. The big namesof British men's walking have also been onthe podium in Sesto - Matthews andThompson in the 1960's - so for the traditionof race walking the Italians were happy tosee British success again in this historiccompetition.Alex Wright and Tom Bosworth both madetheir debuts in senior internationalcompetition. Alex remained on pace for asub 89 minute clocking until 15km, but allthe effects of the warm weather meant allthe British athletes slowed over the last5km. Wright came home to record 90.27 inhis debut. Bosworth recorded 93.02 in his2nd race at the distance.Commenting on the performances CarnegieDirector of Race Walking, Dr Andi Drakesaid: "Jo raced smart and was rewardedwith a podium finish - outside of the majorchampionships these are the events toplace in and she has moved on a level in2010! Nothing new in China, theyalways hold their 50 2 days after the 20and many double up. J. Tallent a PB 79early on and the Chinese, Poles andJapanese and Russians look veryimpressive. What withJamie C and Colin @ 3.50 and 3.51respectively and the 3 of them sub 84 for20 along with Olive, what a greatstandard the Irishare getting for such asmall nation, not forgetting GillianO'Sullivan's World Silver and 87m 20k.Good walking to everyone.Doug Corkill, Isle of Man------------Congrats on a splendid little magazine. Idon't race much these days but do trainthroughout the year and have justcompleted my 24th London Marathon. The last 19 have been race walked whichI'm claiming as a record! My claim to

fame! Was it Andy Warhol who saideverybody has 30 minutes of fame in theirlife. Trouble is that mine has taken over 100hours!Best wishes, Mike Rowland------------I just think it is so good that at last we havewalkers of the calibre of Ben W Tom B andAlec W as they are young and I'm fed up ofgoing to international races listening tonegative thoughts and seeing the Brits doso badly. Hopefully times will return goodnow and I feel that Ben has so muchpotential lastly it is so important that wesend male and female walkers to Delhi sosub 89 is great or walks in theCommonwealths will be no longer.Pete Ryan------------A smashing day for race walking in VictoriaPark yesterday with good fields and a lot ofthe walking community who weren't racingthere and involved, We did, however, I think, miss an oppportunity to market our sport tothe park full of people out in the Springsunshine by ignoring them and appearingonly concerned with ourselves and ourevent. I am sure that there were manyonlookers who were bemused by what wasgoing on and indeed on my way round Iheard the discussions as to what event thiscould be - very few of them would havebeen aware that they were witnessing aNational championship in an Olympic event. My heartiest congratulations and thanks toall those involved in putting on yesterdays'sevent.Steve Allen------------Well done on putting the old RWR archivesup on the RWR website - a great initiative.Things are going well here and our walkingnumbers and age spread continues to bestrong, although we still suffer the inevitabledrain once kids leave school - no easyanswers on that one! On the Ericksonfront, our son Chris is in the WC 50kmteam and has also been named in ourComm Games 20km team so he is in fora big year. Lois and I will go to Delhi butnot to Mexico (finances!) Kind regardsand thanks as always.Tim Erickson, Australia------------RE: ArchivesI bet it’s a long-term project! It seems tome a very useful thing andcongratulations on being brave enough toembark on it. I was once approached bya company that offered to do the job; Ithink that their price was just a little shortof £1,000; made me laugh for days, it did. With best wishes,Peter Cassidy------------I have just got back from Naumburg - thisweekend I was an international athlete! Igot free entry and room and board at theNaumburg International Racewalk /German championships. They even hada Union Jack flying just for me! It was agreat experience. I finished in 2:05:13.Some seriously fast walkers in the race, when they lapped me the leaders weregoing a lot faster than they were inLondon! A very impressive event, theonly event I have seen better organisedthan this was Leamington 2007! This wasthe German championships for everyone, all ages from 9 to 70+, awards in all agegroups, UKA and BMAF please takenote! I plan to do this event again nextyear, hopefully a few more of mycountrymen and women will join me, it’sa good race for some of the promisingyoungsters to get some high classinternational competition.Tony BellEnglishman in Hamburg, GermanyIn the next issue...Nutrition, Technique, Drugs, Results, Reports, News, Photos...
