Learning emotions through music• A recent study has shown that at ninemonths of age, babies are able to discernwhether a song is happy or sad. The babiescould distinctly pick out Beethoven’s Ode toJoy as a happy song in contrast to sadsongs that had been played.• When the tempo and rhythm were faster,and it was in a major key, they noted it wasa happy song. When the songs were in aminor key, and the tempo and rhythm wasslower, they noted it was a sad song.• BYU Psychology Professor Flom says, “Thisperiod of learning about emotion in soundsis a natural step before learning to talk.”
PAL system changing the lives of preemies• PAL (Pacifier Activated Lullaby) is a sensor that is connected to apacifier, hooked up to speakers and a control box with a CD in it. Asthe baby sucks it triggers the music to play.• Positive effects:The PAL machine reports the pressure of the suck, how many timesthe baby needs to suck to make the music play, pacing, andendurance.With the help of PAL, the preemies are calmer, drink twice as muchand are able to leave the hospital two week earlier than the otherbabies.
