The Clinical Directorof Edgewood sees her staff give all they can in thebattle against addictionand knows thistime of year is not aneasy one.“A lot of the patientsare trying theirhardest to be out intime for Christmas.There’s the stress ofhelping families be together, but we ask ourselves is thatthe healthy thing to do, and if it’s not, how do we helpthe family see that?”CedarTeam“On top of that,” she continues, “there are all thethings that counsellors are working through on a personalperspective as well.”But in the end, helping patients atthis time of year has its rewards for those in the counsellingprofession.“I’m always amazedby how many of ourpatients have such Edgewood evening counsellorsgreat memories of this Tonny Nielsen and Jeff Vircoetime of year,” says Maple unit supervisor and counselorLauren Melzak.“Often the addicts’ lives are full of horrible memories orno memories at all,” she explains, “yet here during theholiday season many can look back fondly.”“It’s a special time for them and many of us.”Judi Oakes, a counsellor since 2004, agrees.“Why do I like to work through the Christmas season?
