The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has sponsoredan admission-free show as a holiday gift to the people of the Countyevery December 24 since 1959. The late Kenneth Hahn, Supervisorof the 2nd District from 1952 to 1992, was the father of the HolidayCelebration. Kenneth Hahn cared deeply about the accessibility ofthe arts to everyone. He personally helmed the fundraising for thefirst celebration, which was called the Christmas Program and tookplace at the Sports Arena. When Dorothy “Buffy” Chandler soughtHahn’s support for the proposed Music Center, he told her that hewould support it if he could be sure that the Music Center would beopen free to the residents of the County at least one day each year.In 1964 the Holiday Celebration moved to the just-opened MusicCenter and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion continues to host theHoliday Celebration to this day.The Los Angeles County Arts Commission is executive producer ofthe Holiday Celebration, both the live three-hour show at the MusicCenter and the one-hour special drawn from the live show andbroadcast nationally. The live presentation at the Music Center isthe largest holiday show in the County. Attendance has become aseasonal tradition for thousands of Angelenos. Since 1965, publictelevision station KCET has broadcast the show live in SouthernCalifornia. The first one-hour “best of” compilation of the liveshow aired nationally on PBS in 2002. Admi8edly, it’s a slightly more interes,ng conversa,on to be involved in than one about the weather at the moment. (Yes, raining. In Britain. Whatever next, eh?) But s,ll, can everyone stop going on about the Olympics now, please? I know it’s a huge deal for some, but for me it’s just going to be yet another thing to sweep the na,on that I couldn’t give a sixteenth of a fig about. The only form in which I shall par, cipate will be to roll my eyes at its every men,on, before immediately ge_ng on with my life.
