Guided Trails for KS1 and 2<br />

Guided trails offer an interactive tour highlighting key objects, and an activity around the<br />

<strong>Museum</strong>. One Volunteer Education Guide to every ten children.<br />

Maximum group size: 35 Length of session: 75 minutes<br />

The Aztecs KS2<br />

Pupils build up a picture of how an Aztec person might have looked as they discover Aztec<br />

artefacts, as well as Central-American featherwork and body arts.<br />

Africa KS2<br />

Pupils explore the diversity of Africa by looking at cultures from the savannahs of the East to<br />

the rainforests of the West.<br />

Ancient Egypt KS1&2<br />

Pupils become detectives as they look at artefacts that have survived from Ancient Egypt,<br />

such as mummies and scarab beetles.<br />

Native Americans KS1&2<br />

Discover what totem poles and tipis can reveal about identity and environment. Pupils find<br />

out about the lifestyle of Plains Indians and the Haida people from Canada’s NW Coast.<br />

The Inuit KS1&2<br />

Find out about traditional Inuit life and explore the materials available to craftsmen in a cold<br />

environment.<br />

First Visit to the <strong>Pitt</strong> <strong>Rivers</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> KS1<br />

A chance to see and handle an exciting range of objects from around the world. 1 hour


Hands-on Workshops for KS1 and 2<br />

Workshops are led by Education Officers and allow pupils to handle and learn from <strong>Museum</strong><br />

artefacts. Maximum group size: 35.<br />

New<br />

What is it? Years 5 & 6<br />

A fun object handling session to encourage questioning and analytical skills. Pupils handle<br />

mystery objects and research artefacts around the <strong>Museum</strong>. 1 hour<br />

African Music Years 5 & 6<br />

Discover the music and instruments of Africa, play a traditional piece on the giant Ugandan<br />

embaire xylophone and explore the African collections in the <strong>Museum</strong>. 135 minutes<br />

History Detective KS2<br />

Discover what objects can reveal about people and their environment by handling artefacts<br />

and exploring the <strong>Museum</strong>. Pupils develop their skills of historical enquiry as they find out<br />

about a mystery person from a range of sources. 90 minutes<br />

Extreme Environments KS2<br />

Pupils explore how extreme hot and cold environments affect peoples’ ways of life.<br />

They handle objects from hot and cold places, and compare how the Maasai and Inuit people<br />

adapt to their environments. 1 hour<br />

Masks KS1&2<br />

Pupils explore why people wear masks and how they can be used in celebrations,<br />

performances or ceremonies. They look at how character can be expressed as they handle<br />

masks, investigate the <strong>Museum</strong>’s collections and draw a mask. 1 hour<br />

Puppets and Stories KS1&2<br />

The session will focus on the Hindu story of the Ramayana while pupils handle Javanese<br />

shadow puppets, explore the <strong>Museum</strong>, create stories and learn about light and shadow.<br />

Shadow puppets can be made back at <strong>school</strong>. 1 hour<br />

Materials KS1<br />

Pupils handle objects and do backpack activities around the <strong>Museum</strong> to explore the way<br />

people use a variety of materials to make everyday objects. 1 hour<br />

There are a selection of trails for self-guided visits available on the website.

History. Visits to this <strong>Museum</strong> must be booked separately.<br />

Access<br />

The <strong>Museum</strong> is fully accessible to visitors with disability, with an adapted<br />

toilet and lift to all floors. There is a platform lift at the main entrance and<br />

level access via the South Door on Robinson Close. A disabled parking<br />

space may be booked in advance. Please speak to staff for details.<br />

Lunch<br />

Lunch can be eaten on the <strong>Museum</strong> lawn or in the University Parks in fine<br />

weather. If available, a room can be booked in advance to eat lunch in<br />

when it is raining.
