The recommended method fordetermining proper torque is to install one unit first, with blade on the uphill side. After tightening the set screws, loosen and remove the unit, inspecting the indentationscreated in the seam to see that proper compression was obtained. Remember, the screw closest to the blade is the real workhorse as it derives its strength from the blade,and if extra torque is needed, apply it to this screw.WHEN MECHANICALLY FASTENING SNOW GUARDS, use sealant or neoprene washers to ensure watertight seals. It is imperative to secure these products to astructural membrane rafter or purlin at least 1.5 inches deep.Berger Building Products, Inc (BBPI) snow guards are devices that are attached to the roof structure in order to provide uniform retention and control the snow fromavalanching in large sheets. Once an architect has determined thekind of roof he intends to use, he must give equal attentionto the design of the roof drainage system.Factors to be considered in the design of roof drainage systemsare the area to be drained, size of gutters, downspouts,outlets, slope of roof, type of building, and appearance.ROOF AREA TO BE CONSIDEREDThe design capacity for a roof drainage system depends onthe quantity of water to be handled. The quantity of water inturn depends on the roof area, slope, and rainfall intensity.In considering the roof area, it must be remembered thatrain does not necessarily fall vertically and that maximumconditions exist only when rain falls perpendicular to a surface.Since the roof area would increase as its pitch increases,then it would not be advisable to use the plan area of a pitchedroof in the calculation of a drainage system.Experience has taught that use of the true area of a pitchedroof often leads to oversizing of gutters, downspouts, anddrains. Table 1-2 based on records through1978, gives five minute intensities for selected cities. NewOrleans, Los Angeles, for example, may have 8 in./hr.(203mm/hr) for a five minute duration yet record only 4.8 in.(121 mm) in an hour over a 100 year period. These ratescorrespond to 0.133 in./min.(3.4 mm/min.) and 0.08 in./min.(2 mm/min.). Local codes may require that drainagesystems only be designed for the latter. It takes 96.15 squarefeet(8.93 square meters) of surface with 1 inch per hour(25mm/hr) of water to correspond with 1 gpm (0.063 l/s) flowrate. Downspouts and gutters are sized in relation to rainfallon this basis.Plumbing codes typically use the vertically projected roofarea for drainage design and they often use a square footallowance per square inch of downspout for 1 in./hr.(25 mm/hr) rainfall that varies with diameter, for example, 3 in.(76mm): 911(85); 4 in.(102 mm): 1100 (102); 5 in.(127 mm):1280 (119); 6 in.(152 mm): 1400 (130) and 8 in.(203 mm):1750 (163) sq. ft.(sq. m). Net drainage capacity from usingTable 1-1 and 1-2 should be compared with local code requirements.DOWNSPOUT SIZINGIn sizing downspouts, the following considerations apply:1. Downspouts of less than 7.00 sq in.(4515 sq mm)cross section should not be used except for small areassuch as porches and canopies.2. Also, special selection is required for corrosive environments such as coastal orpolluted industrial atmospheres. Galvanic or Electrolytic Corrosion can occur when dissimilar metals are in contact inthe presence of an electrolyte. An electrolyte is any non-metal substance that will conduct an electric current,especially a liquid solution. Water, particularly rainwater, is a good electrolyte.A galvanic scale has been developed for metals. Metals that are more electropositive (anodic) will corrode moreeasily and metals that are more electronegative (cathodic) are more corrosion resistant. When two dissimilar metalsare in contact in the presence of an electrolyte, the electropositive metal will corrode. All tend to rank corrosion rates innon-quantitative terms such as mild, moderate and severe. Tinning keeps scale andcorrosion from forming on the soldering copper point that acts as insulation, allows the solder to flow properlyfrom the point to the metal, and keeps dirt and scale out of both the solder and the seam. Historically, the tradehas used a 50% Tin – 50% Lead solder for best results. Today, there are also lead-free solder alternatives that aremore environmentally friendly.1. Heat the copper to a cherry red and place it in a vise. Using a coarse file, remove pits and old tinning.Then using a finer file, smooth off the rough edges of the corners of the point.2. Reheat the copper enough to melt the solder. Apply a small portion of solder to the tip and rub the tiplightly back and forth on a block of Sal Ammoniac. If the solder does not adhere to the point, it isbecause the soldering copper is not hot enough. Do not inhale the white smoke that should rise fromthe Sal Ammoniac block. It is a toxic gas and should not be breathed.3. The solder copper should be neither overheated nor under heated during the tinning operation. If thecopper is too hot, the tin will burn off as fast as it is applied. If it is too cold, the solder will not adhereto the copper.Clean All Surfaces of Oxides, Dirt, Grease, and Other Foreign MatterUnless the metal that is being soldered is clean, neither the solder nor the flux will adhere to the surface if themetal.Applying the Soldering FluxApplying the flux is important. Carelessness in its application will ruin the entire solder procedure.1. Liquid Fluxes are applied with a small brush. Dip the brush and spread it lightly on the area to besoldered. Do not apply flux anywhere except where the soldering is to be done.2. Powdered flux, such as rosin may be sprinkled onto the surface to be soldered or it can be melted on tothe metal with a hot copper. Do not apply flux anywhere except where the soldering is to be done.3. Flux will absorb moisture, which weakens its capability. Be sure to use fresh flux that has not beendiluted.SolderingInstallations for copper and steel roof drainage products require joint surfaces to be sealed with solder for addedstrength to the finished product. While Berger Building Products, Inc. supplies a wide variety of components for roofdrainage systems, the final selection of solder materials is ultimately the sole responsibility of the end user.Position of the Soldering CopperThe position of the soldering copper is important as it is applied to the parent metal because it heats the metal tothe melting point of solder and it keeps the solder in a liquid state while soldering.1. It is important that as much of the point of the copper is resting on the metal as possible to allowmaximum heat transfer from the tip to the metal. Most of the heat is in the body and the base of thepoint of the soldering copper – not in the tip.2. Since melted solders flow to the hottest point of the metal, have the base of the soldering copper incontact with the area in which the solder is to flow. Light tarnish (oxides)may be removed with a "flux", while heavy oxides may require a mechanical cleaning (i.e. emery cloth or nonmetallicabrasive pad such as scotchbrite). It is important to use a wetting agent or flux. This serves (2)purposes: a) removal of thin oxide films and b) assists in "drawing" the solder into the seam.c. On bare copper, pre-tinning is a must. Pre-tinning greatly increases the ability of solder to flow andcompletely sweat the seams.d. Traditionally, the trade used a 50% tin – 50% lead alloy as the most commonly used solder. While thisproduct is still widely used, concern regarding lead in the environment has caused some architects andcontractors to seek "lead-free" solders. As with coated metals, apply "tin-loaded" fluxes such as Johnson'sE-127 Flux-'N-Solder with Pure Tin to joint surfaces. Heat the joint with soldering copper only. Torches arenot recommended and as the Flux-'N-Solder becomes molten and tins the inner surfaces of the seam, applyJohnson's #497 micro-bar solder. Watch the molton tin draw the #497 solder into seam and fill it completely.e. The heat source must be sufficient to raise the temperature of the entire seam to the point at which solderflows freely (above its melting point). Historically heavy, (10 pounds per pair) soldering coppers (irons) wereheated in a charcoal or gas fired pot. While many contractors will use coppers heated in this manner, mostnow use continuously heated soldering copper (torches). Despite the name, these DO NOT involve a directflame on the metal to be soldered. Soldering in this manner can spot heat the copper resulting in warping ortwisting of the metal. It can also burn the flux out of the seam and/or tin out of the solder. Any of these willcause a weak, poorly made seam. Rather, a gas flame heats the copper tip. All gasses do not providesufficient heat to insure fully sweat seams. Acetylene heated torches are recommended for locked orsoldered seams. Electrically heated soldering irons may be used for lap seams made in the shop, but are notsuitable for most field soldering.f. All flux should be washed off of the metal after soldering is complete.g. There are many commercially marketed fluxes for soldering copper.TECHNICAL REFERENCE APPENDIX3. FreedomGray ® Coppera. It is imperative that the metal to receive solder be dry, clean, and free of oxides, dirt, oils, etc. Solder will notadhere to such foreign materials. The pre-weathered "wash-coat" (paint) on FreedomGray ® must be removedfrom all surfaces to receive solder. Wash-coat may be removed by wiping with lacquer thinner or similarsolvent. CAUTION: Lacquer thinner is extremely flammable.b. In addition to conventional zinc-chloride fluxes that Revere suggests for soldering plain copper, "tin-loaded"fluxes such as Johnson's E-127 Flux-'N-Solder with Pure Tin may be used to solder FreedomGray ® .(Johnson Manufacturing Company, Princeton, IA 563-289-5123)c. Technically, FreedomGray ® may be soldered with "conventional, lead/tin solders" or "high-tin, lead-free"solders. To eliminate potential health and environmental problems associated with lead and insure lead-freeinstallations, Revere suggests lead-free solder (i.e. Johnson #497 SuperFlo by Johnson ManufacturingCompany, Princeton, IA 563-289-5123) be used with FreedomGray ® . When used with "conventional" fluxes,lead-free solders do not flow or "draw" into seams as quickly or easily as lead-tin solders.
