Among them werethe descendants of both Mr Tan KahKee and Dr Lee Kong Chian, repre-sentatives from Chinese organisationssuch as the Chinese Chamberof Commerce & Industry, various ChineseClans Associations and businessguilds as well as the principals andvice-principals from schools in Singaporeand Malaysia.The exhibition features four galleriesdedicated to Mr Tan and Dr Lee'sroles as entrepreneurs, promoters ofeducation and community leadersand the legacy they left behind. Toengage the interest of the youngergeneration in our pioneers, photographsand artefacts were carefullychosen and designed to weave thestories of both men together. A fairuse of videos, oral history recordingsand newly created audio interviewsadd to the multi-sensory experiencefor the visitors, and the interactivefeatures for the public to participatein polls and quizzes on what theycan do for others as well as for thefuture generation add to the fun ofbiblioasia | 34

n e w sThis classroom comes with interesting discoveries hidden inside each of the 40 desksvisiting the exhibition. A classroomgallery that depicts a classroom ofthe 1950s comes with interestingdiscoveries hidden inside each of the40 desks, making it refreshing to theyouth, while bringing back nostalgiaand memories for those who haveattended classes in rooms with furniturethat looked like this.Positive feedback was receivedfrom the visitors of the exhibitionand the following are just some examples:“Astonished! n e w s承 前 启 后 继 往 开 来 陈 嘉 庚 与 李 光 前 览蓝 玫 珲厦 门 图 书 馆 , 办 公 室 副 主 任by Lan MeihunDeputy Head, Administrative Office,Xiamen Library7 月 14 日 下 午 5 点 , 我 和小 李 到 达 新 加 坡 樟 宜 机 场 ,走 出 机 场 大 厅 时 , 看 见 新 加坡 国 家 图 书 馆 的 刘 桂 华 女 士( 副 处 长 , 国 家 图 书 馆 业 务促 进 部 ) 和 一 直 与 我 们 联 络展 览 工 作 的 黄 美 萍 女 士 ( 高级 图 书 馆 员 , 参 考 与 研 究 服务 )。 我 们 四 个 一 见 面 就 发出 会 心 的 笑 , 感 受 到 老 友 相见 的 那 种 快 乐 。 去 年 年 底 她们 来 中 国 进 行 展 览 前 期 考 察时 , 我 和 小 李 全 程 陪 同 使 我们 彼 此 都 非 常 熟 悉 , 加 上 我和 小 李 因 展 览 工 作 与 美 萍 有非 常 多 的 沟 通 和 交 流 , 这 更让 我 们 感 觉 不 到 时 空 上 的 分离 , 去 年 的 道 别 仿 佛 还 像 是昨 天 的 事 。第 二 天 早 上 , 我 和 小 李从 住 的 酒 店 走 到 新 加 坡 国 家图 书 馆 。 在 图 书 馆 大 楼 下 ,我 们 感 受 到 展 览 浓 浓 的 气氛 , 两 边 立 杆 上 高 高 地 挂 着宣 传 海 报 。 中 英 文 双 语 宣 传海 报 体 现 了 新 加 坡 多 语 种 国家 的 特 色 , 我 们 还 在 海 报 上发 现 厦 门 图 书 馆 的 馆 名 和logo, 荣 耀 感 也 立 刻 在 我 心中 升 腾 起 来 。到 了 国 家 图 书 馆 , 美 萍安 排 我 和 小 李 到 李 光 前 参 考图 书 馆 10 楼 展 厅 观 看 展 览 。在 来 新 加 坡 之 前 , 我 知 道展 览 的 大 概 定 位 , 也 设 想 过展 览 的 场 景 , 但 真 正 见 到 展览 时 , 还 是 非 常 吃 惊 。 也 许在 收 集 资 料 的 过 程 中 , 看 到的 都 是 逝 去 多 年 的 人 事 、情 景 , 蒙 尘 的 旧 照 片 、 锈迹 斑 斑 的 旧 物 件 很 难 让 我和 这 个 年 轻 、 充 满 活 力 的The first exhibition gallery is dedicated to Mr Tan and Dr Lee’s roles as entrepreneurs展 览 联 系 在 一 起 。 甚 至 主 题墙 也 如 年 轻 人 一 般 , 简 单 得让 人 担 心 , 只 有 大 大 的 “ 诚毅 ” 和 “ 承 前 启 后 继 往 开来 : 陈 嘉 庚 与 李 光 前 ” 几 个字 , 很 明 显 的 少 了 一 样 很 重要 的 东 西 。 直 到 看 完 展 览 ,看 到 鸣 谢 墙 时 才 明 白 我 担 心的 缘 由 , 他 们 将 主 办 单 位 、协 作 伙 伴 和 赞 助 机 构 、 个 人等 放 在 最 后 , 表 达 一 种 不 喧宾 夺 主 诚 意 与 谢 意 。大 概 全 世 界 都 面 临 一 样的 问 题 , 就 是 年 轻 人 对 本 国传 统 文 化 的 认 同 感 越 来 越少 。 各 国 也 都 在 积 极 寻 找 让年 轻 人 接 受 和 理 解 的 方 式 ,努 力 将 自 己 的 传 统 文 化 表 达出 来 。 新 加 坡 多 元 文 化 的 背景 , 使 得 年 轻 人 很 少 认 真 关注 华 人 的 传 统 精 神 和 力 量 ,因 此 新 加 坡 国 家 图 书 馆 举 办这 次 展 览 的 目 的 之 一 是 吸 引新 加 坡 年 轻 人 前 来 观 看 展览 , 鼓 励 新 加 坡 人 学 习 陈 嘉庚 、 李 光 前 先 生 “ 达 则 兼 济天 下 ” 的 精 神 。 所 以 , 展 览处 处 体 现 吸 引 年 轻 人 的 特点 : 陈 嘉 庚 或 李 光 前 先 生 的格 言 警 句 , 激 励 或 警 示 年 轻人 ; 新 颖 的 模 拟 课 室 , 展 示的 是 二 十 世 纪 五 十 年 代 的 场景 , 掀 开 课 桌 里 面 放 置 的 是那 个 年 代 的 学 生 读 物 , 以 及放 映 三 部 有 关 陈 嘉 庚 与 李 光前 生 平 及 贡 献 的 记 录 片 ; 还有 专 门 录 制 的 口 述 历 史 声 像资 料 ; 展 区 四 则 完 成 是 用声 、 光 、 电 等 非 常 年 轻 的 因素 组 成 的 互 动 区 , 展 示 陈 嘉庚 与 李 光 前 无 私 奉 献 、 遗 爱人 间 的 精 神 。当 然 展 览 也 能 让 老 一 代人 产 生 缅 怀 和 共 鸣 , 展 览 使用 了 100 多 张 珍 贵 旧 照 片 和60 多 件 文 物 , 都 是 那 个 时 代的 物 品 , 即 使 和 这 些 展 品 没有 任 何 关 系 的 人 , 面 对 这 些时 也 不 能 不 睹 物 思 怀 , 回 想和 思 考 那 个 年 代 留 下 的 精 神品 质 。 展 览 现 场 我 们 碰 到 一些 老 人 家 , 他 们 看 到 模 拟 课室 后 开 心 地 说 那 课 桌 和 小 学课 本 就 是 我 们 以 前 用 的 。新 加 坡 国 家 图 书 馆 在 新馆 举 办 了 四 次 类 似 的 展 览 ,只 有 这 一 次 国 家 总 理 李 显 龙先 生 出 席 展 览 的 开 幕 式 。 这biblioasia | 39

While we adopt a globalview, we must develop a sense of historyand appreciation of our heritage.Only then can we truly understandhow and why we are unique, relate tothe world confidently and develop theroots that bind us to this nation.”The National Library also launchedtwo online initiatives, namely the VirtualDonors Gallery and Flickr SNAP.The Virtual Donors Gallery (www.donors.nl.sg)is an online portal showcasinghighlights of Donors Collection andlocal artefacts donated by the publicduring the first Heritage Road Show in2006. Researchers and overseas visitorscan now get a chance to see our localheritage in the comfort of their homes.The other initiative, Flickr SNAP(www.flickr.com/people/snapsg/), isan extension of the National Library’sSingapore National Album of Pictures(SNAP) on the popular photo-sharingwebsite, Flickr.com. This initiative allowsthe National Library to widen itsdonorship pool by encouraging the onlinecommunity to share their personalphoto collections without having topart with their much-treasured mementos.In support of this initiative, Yahoo!had also featured heritage photos onSingapore’s Yahoo! network and participatedin the Road Show to promotegreater awareness of their services.Through public contributions, theNational Library hopes to build a morecomprehensive collection of pictorialrecords of Singapore’s progression beforethe 1980s. Scores of Singaporeanscame ready with photos depicting localarchitecture and landscape, commerceand industry, arts, ethnic communities,events, geography, nature, organisations,personalities, recreation, politicsand government.Dr N Varaprasad, Chief Executiveof National Library Board, lauded theresponsive role that the public hadtaken up in the ongoing efforts toexpand and enrich Singapore’s heritagecollection. He added, “The photosthat you donate will form part ofSingapore’s pictorial heritage for futuregenerations. Donations to the NationalLibrary play a significant role in addingdiversity and depth to our collections.Participation from the local communitiesis thus important to preserving andbuilding our cultural heritage.”At the end of the event, the NationalLibrary had harvested a total of 1,095items of which 150 were physical itemsand 945 photographs were convertedinto digital format. The physical itemscollected included Arts Theatre of Singaporeprogramme collaterals from the1950s to 1960s, photographs of BugisStreet during the 1960s and the SingaporeIsland Country Club during the1930s. Thesigning ceremony took place atthe residence of Ustaz AhmadSonhadji’s daughter in Toa Payoh.Ms Ngian Lek Choh, DeputyChief Executive of NLB led the NLBrepresentatives that include Ms EuniceLow who had been instrumental inliaising with Ustaz Ahmad Sonhadji andhis family to allow NLB to help preserveUstaz Ahmad Sonhadji’s works andcollections.Ustaz Ahmad Sonhadji and his familyexpressed their sadness in parting withthe collections. However, they arepleased that the collections will bemade accessible to a wider audiencevia NLB’s library infrastructure and theyhope the collections will benefit thelibrary users.Ustaz Ahmad Sonhadji’s collectionsMs Ngian and Mr Ustaz Ahmad Sonhadji Mohamadwith the token of appreciation from National LibraryBoardcomprise more than 1,000 publicationsand more than 500 manuscripts. Themanuscripts include notes of hissermons and interpretation of theQur’an for which he is most respectedfor in the region of Southeast Asia.About Ustaz Ahmad SonhadjiMohamadUstaz Ahmad Sonhadji is a renownedand respected Muslim scholar fromSingapore. He was born in August1922 in Surakarta (Solo), CentralJava, Indonesia. His family migratedto Singapore in 1927 and lived in thevicinity of Jalan Sultan known asPasir Gembur.He studied in Madrasah Aljuniedand later became a teacher andprincipal there. He held variouspositions in the Muslim ReligiousCouncil of Singapore (MUIS) abody that advises the governmenton matters relating to Islam inSingapore.He has produced many workswhich include the translation andinterpretation of the Qur’an into theMalay language. It took him more than25 years to complete this task and it hasbeen subsequently been republishedmany times. His instructional book onperforming the prayer has also beenrepublished many times and has beentranslated into other languages such asKorean and Sinhalese.Ustaz Ahmad Sonhadji is proudthat many of his students have heldimportant religious posts in Malaysia,Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore. Eventhough he is already 86 years old, heis still teaching on a weekly basis atMuhajirin Mosque.biblioasia | 46

He will beresearching on “Media Constructions ofSamsui Women Historiography”.The Lee Kong Chian Research Fellowshipinvites scholars, practitioners andlibrarians to undertake collection relatedresearch and publish on the National Libraryof Singapore’s prized collections.The Fellowship aims to position the NationalLibrary Board as the first stop forAsian collection services.
