Hate Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and HIV-affected Communities in the U.S. in 2011NCAVPCONCLUSION2011 was a year of increased visibility for LGBTQH communities, marked by a historic expansion of rights forLGBTQH people and unprecedented efforts by the federal government to include LGBTQH communities in itswork to address violence. Amidst this progress, NCAVP finds the highest number of anti-LGBTQH murders everreported. These two seemingly contradictory facts illuminate that we are increasingly getting more accurate atdocumenting anti-LGBTQH violence. The media and policymakers have finally begun to recognize that anti-LGBTQ violence is a critical issue.This year’s report reveals an increase in the severity of anti-LGBTQH hate violence. Consistent with our findingsin 2010, NCAVP once again finds that transgender people, LGBTQH people of color, transgender people of color,and young people continued to be disproportionately impacted by violence and murder. Simultaneously, thesecommunities have the least access to resources and support services. NCAVP continues its commitment tounderstanding and implementing an analysis of anti-LGBTQ hate violence that integrates an understanding ofintersectional identities including how racism, ageism, classism, anti-immigrant bias, homophobia, transphobia, andheterosexism create can impact various LGBTQ people differently.This report serves as a reminder of the ongoing and necessary work conducted by policy makers, funders,community-based organizations, first respondents, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and communitymembers in order to ensure safety for all of our communities. NCAVP urges LGBTQH communities and our alliesto continue these conversations about marginalized identities and the risk of violence that faces members of thoseparticular communities. LGBTQ survivors of violence face multiple roadblocks to support and reporting, whichemphasize the need to continue to invest in research, reporting, and outreach to communities that remainunderrepresented in data collection and analysis. In this time of unforeseen political access and cultural visibility,NCAVP will continue to assert its mission and continue the work of reducing violence and increasing safety forLGBTQH communities.58
