an age of Innovation
The world is changing. Growing populations are placing a strain
on water and energy resources; our climate is becoming less
predictable; much our infrastructure is reaching the end of its
service life; and an increasing reliance on information technology has created a new set
of challenges.
Canada is responding to these challenges with improved technologies and solutions to
help conserve the world’s limited resources, mitigate risks and manage our natural and
man-made assets more effectively.
Countries have been underinvesting in infrastructure for decades, and must now make
sizeable investments to ensure global competitiveness and maintain acceptable levels
of service. Adding to the pressure are new entrants on global trade, combined with
population growth—a population with an increasingly higher standard of living. These
factors have created an unprecedented need for new infrastructure in regions such
as Latin America, India and the Gulf Cooperation Council, providing opportunities for
Canadians to market their innovation and know-how.
Cities around the world are looking to invest in infrastructure that will replace aging
assets, and help address the growing issue of capacity. In the water sector, that means
unique technologies to aid in water reuse. The fuel economy—especially oil and gas—
is one of Canada’s major business sectors, and it provides great testing grounds for
applications that address the huge amount of water and energy used by these industries.
In the energy sector, it means technologies and concepts to develop the growing smart
grid and manage demand, and to harvest renewable sources of power.
In the building sector, from hospitals to private developments, the challenge becomes
integrating these cutting-edge efficiencies into the design phase. Our engineers in
particular have taken this challenge in hand and are working on holistic approaches that
create not just green buildings, but smart systems.
This edition of Canadians at Work features an article on our engineering sector,
highlighting the expertise of Canada’s consulting engineers. The work they are doing in
the pre-construction phase of projects to create more efficient overall systems is placing
them on the cutting edge of the industry. For that reason, we chose to feature several
projects in this year’s listing that are still in the pre-construction, or design stage.
Other projects highlighted this year illustrate the growing trend towards smart,
efficient, renewable infrastructure solutions. From geothermal power generation, to
desalination plants, to intelligent transportation systems, waste-to-energy facilities, and
district cooling plants, we’ve highlighted our capacity to create solutions to meet this
century’s unique environmental challenges.
The world is headed for leaps in innovation, the likes of which have not been seen in
at least 50 years. Canadian companies have a major role to play. As populations grow and
resources become less available, efficiency becomes a key element of any infrastructure
project. Canadian companies, driven by capacity challenges, are developing innovative
design and technology solutions.
At EDC, our role is to encourage and support that innovation. To that end we have
established a team of knowledgeable financing and insurance specialists to support
Canadian companies selling in up to 200 markets around the world. Our products and
services are as innovative and flexible as the companies we serve. We can work directly
with the Canadian supplier or the foreign company that would like to buy their goods
and services. We can help Canadian companies market to, invest in or grow their existing
business in new markets or help those looking to invest here. And with our on-theground
international representatives we can help you identify sales opportunities that
are right for your company.
This listing is a snapshot of the capabilities that Canadian companies are bringing to
our changing world, companies that are working toward finding solutions to some of
the world’s most pressing infrastructure challenges.
Sincerely,
Engenius
Canada is the fourth largest exporter of consulting
engineering services in the world—from
traditional structural engineering to cutting-edge
smart buildings, Canada has built its reputation
on a strong base of research and professionalism.
is one of the biggest
exports for Canada because
“Engineering
investors in other countries look
for innovation, and innovation is part of
what Canadian engineers do best,” says
CEO of Engineers Canada, Chantal Guay.
Canada has built up its expertise
and international client base thanks
to strong federal support for research
and development, a reputation for
professionalism, and superior client
management skills. Now that sustainable
design and clean technologies are
becoming more mainstream, Canadian
engineers are able to use a collaborative
approach to put a new spin on an old idea.
As Brian Guthrie, principal, environmental
management, at Canadian engineering
firm Stantec, says, “Sustainable design
is just creating efficient systems and
services.” It’s a simple idea that Canadian
engineering firms have understood for
decades.
It’s this basic understanding of
sustainability and efficient design, in
addition to an ability to tailor their
approach to a client’s specific needs, that
CanadIans at WORk:
50 International Infrastructure Projects
Canadian firm,
LEA Group,
worked on taking
India’s Dhaka-
Chittagong
Highway from
traffic jam (left)
to quick commute
(right).
puts Canadian firms in demand. There are
also more foreign-trained professionals
working in Canada than probably
anywhere else. “That’s another reason
we do well,” says Peter Halsall, president
of Canadian engineering services firm
Halsall Associates Limited.
Understanding the client
Halsall says, “I think the firms that work
well internationally are the ones who
are good at client management—the
Golders, the Hatches, they are in that
class of engineers. They really listen to
the client instead of just grinding out the
same old, same old.”
At engineering firm Read Jones
Christopherson (RJC), contractors find
it’s their willingness to modify designs
to suit input from co-consultants, subcontractors,
or other disciplines that leads
to better constructability in the end.
“Canadian firms also employ
people from all over the world, which
differentiates us from most countries,”
says Halsall. “This allows us to develop
connections outside of Canada, which
means we are more likely to hear about
opportunities outside of the country.”
Halsall provides the example of the
excellent relationship his firm has been
able to cultivate with clients in Lebanon,
thanks to an employee in their Toronto
office who grew up in the country. “We
wouldn’t have gone there without his
experience in the culture,” he says. “It
strengthens our client service.”
LEA Group, a Canadian consulting
engineering and urban planning venture,
also utilizes its international staff to
better serve its international clients.
Chairman of Lea Group holdings, John
Farrow, says his head office staff speak
more than 40 languages and regional
dialects between them. Farrow says one
of the advantages to having a diverse
staff is their willingness to relocate to
another country for months at a time.
“Our projects run for two years,” he
says. “So it’s important that we’re able to
recruit people who are willing to work in
an international location for an extended
period of time and are comfortable in
that environment.”
Quality research
The Government of Canada, through the
National Research Council, has supported
research and development in the
engineering sector. Engineering giants
such as Quebec-based SNC-Lavalin and
Ontario’s Golder Associates were able to
develop a high level of expertise in niche
sectors, including hydro engineering and
natural resources, due in large part to
public-sector support.
Halsall says the success of firms like
his that export services internationally
is based partly on federal support for
building research. “On the building side,
we had a pretty good research base,
so we know a lot more about building
performance than certain other firms,
even in the United States. They didn’t
have that scale of research.”
Professionalism
Canadian engineering firms have an
international reputation for being really
good at what they do. But Halsall says it’s
not just a reputation. “The backbone of
our industry is people who are world class
in what they do.” He adds that the ethical
standards to which many Canadian
companies adhere are incomparable.
Many Canadian firms take their
responsibility to society and to be clientfocussed,
but also scientifically rigorous,
very seriously.
Case by Case
Disaster mitigation
Engineers Canada’s Chantal Guay
says, “Because Canada has so many
different kinds of climates—up north,
south, coastal regions—that makes us
knowledgeable about climates around
the world, and also capable of helping
adapt infrastructure to the weather
extremes we have been witnessing.”
Beyond Canada’s experience with
colder temperatures, its engineers
have also dealt with the risk posed by
earthquakes.
Case in Point: Provincial bridge seismic
engineer, Sharlie Huffman, was part of
a Canadian earthquake reconnaissance
team that travelled to Chile to assist
with the inspection of damaged bridge
structures as a result of an April 2010
earthquake. At the time, Transportation
and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond
said, “The Canadian team of engineers
will provide assistance and expertise to
Chilean officials.” Showing the Canadian
commitment to furthering expertise in all
areas, Bond continued, “It will also serve
as a critical opportunity to further expand
our ministry’s knowledge about the
effects of seismic activity on structures,
and apply those best practices.”
Canada is the chair of the World
Federation of Engineering Organizations
(WFEO). The WFEO has six committees,
each one working on various issues, one
of which is environmental sustainability.
In line with Canada’s commitment to
research and innovation, Engineers
Canada and its partners have established
the Public Infrastructure Engineering
Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC). Cofunded
by Natural Resources Canada
(NRCan) and Engineers Canada,
PIEVC is a major Canadian initiative
looking broadly and systematically at
infrastructure vulnerability to climate
change from an engineering perspective.
The Committee’s work, which has
been internationally recognized, will
result in the First National Engineering
Vulnerability Assessment.
Building Sector
“Building research is an example of where
we took buildings really seriously as a
nation,” says Peter Halsall. It’s a sector in
which Canadian engineers are building a
strong reputation internationally.
Case in Point: The LEA group has over
1,000 staff operating out of India, with
offices in 14 cities in India. Its staff in
Bangladesh is currently supervising the
design and construction of the Jatrabari-
Gulistan Flyover project. It currently takes
two hours to travel the 3.1 kilometres
from Dhania, on the Dhaka-Chittagong
Highway, to the capital’s Palashi’s
Shaheed Zahir Raihan Road.
Structural Engineering
Canadian firms have built up capabilities
through years of experience at home—
experience that has built them a
reputation that makes them attractive to
international clients looking to replicate
some of their successes.
Case in Point: Last year, the Read Jones
Christoffersen (RJC) structural engineering
team launched an international division.
Led by one of the firm’s principals,
Gilbert Raynard, the team has worked
extensively in the United States, and is
now working in India. India is getting
into more high-rise development, and
Vancouver—where RJC is based—is the
high-rise condominium capital of the
world. “It’s not that Vancouver has the
most high-rises,” says Raynard, “but
the designs here are the most urbanfriendly.
A lot of cities emulate our point
towers (as opposed to long, rectangular
towers).” RJC often teams up with
Vancouver-based Rafii Architects. They’re
currently working together on a mixeduse
development in Mohali, a suburb
of Chandigarh, India. RJC will do the
preliminary design on these buildings
and then meet with local design teams
and explain how the detailed design
should be done. They then stay in contact
throughout the process, checking on
construction at one or two critical points
to make sure their original design is
being carried out properly.
Sustainable systems
Sustainable systems, environmentallyfriendly
infrastructure, and clean
technologies are in demand around the
world. Canada has one of the strongest
consulting and planning industries in
the world, with a particular expertise
in building environmentally-friendly
infrastructure and clean energy systems.
Case in Point: Quebec-based consulting
engineering firm GENIVAR has been
involved in developing over one third
of Canada’s wind energy capacity, and
is passing that experience on to its
numerous international clients. In 2008,
GENIVAR worked with Investor-owned
utility NorthWestern Energy on a study to
simulate and assess wind power variability
for various development scenarios in the
State of Montana. The results include
a projection of expected wind power
variability resulting from various growth
scenarios of the Montana wind energy
industry; a demonstration of the effect
on wind variability resulting from various
regional dispersion scenarios; and an
assessment of the impact on electric
system reliability of these scenarios.
nowhere have Canadian
innovators made their mark
more in recent years than in the
area of water technology. Canada
competes on innovation and niche
technology that, in some cases, leads
to lower cost solutions. Two major
success stories are ZENON, developer
of membrane technologies for water
purification, wastewater treatment
and water recycling, and Trojan
Technologies, which specializes in
the design, manufacture and sale
of pressurized and open-channel,
ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems.
Both companies, now owned by larger
firms GE and Danaher, are recognized
as global leaders in water treatment
technologies.
“Canada has a lot of expertise to offer
in several areas,” says John Coburn,
managing director at water investment
firm XPV Capital Corporation. “When
countries are buying Canadian, they’re
buying world-class products.”
Case by Case
Water treatment
Case in Point: Toronto-based UV Pure
Technologies sees the global need for
high-quality water as an opportunity.
The company manufactures and develops
ultraviolet drinking water systems. Its
Crossfire technology incorporates two
proprietary high-output ultraviolet (UV)
lamps, with elliptical reflectors, that
target pathogens with radiation from
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Canadian companies play a world-level game when it comes to water and wastewater treatment.
dose possible to deactivate pathogens
and provide safe drinking water.
The Belvedere Winery in Sonoma,
California, uses multiple Hallett 30s,
outfitted with UV Pure’s Crossfire
technology, to treat potable water for
its tasting room and water used in the
wine-making process. Another client, this
time in Australia, uses the Hallett to treat
greywater for irrigation. Rick Van Sant,
UV Pure’s CEO, says Australia is its fastestgrowing
market. The company is also
seeing an increase in business in China,
where the company is bringing clean
water to the country’s hotel industry.
UV Pure’s results are gaining attention.
“We’re seeing more and more interest in
strategic alliances from other significant
global players that are looking to
marry their distribution footprint with
advanced technologies,” says Van Sant.
Case in Point: Quebec-based H2O
Innovation designs, develops, produces,
and integrates custom-built water
treatment systems for the production
of drinking water, the treatment of
wastewater, or for use in industrial
processes. Recently, the company
partnered with India’s Chembond
Chemicals to create H2O India, selling
solutions to the country’s industrial market.
Case in Point: Ontario-based BIOREM
designs, manufactures and distributes a
comprehensive line of high-efficiency air
emission control systems used to eliminate
odours, volatile organic compounds,
and hazardous air pollutants, especially
in municipal and industrial wastewater
applications.
Case in Point: Ontario-based ENPAR
Technologies Inc. applies its patented and
proprietary electrochemical technologies
to the treatment of wastewater and
drinking water contaminated by metals
or nutrients associated with the mining,
metal processing, chemical, agricultural,
municipal and waste management sectors.
Water loss
“By sending drinking water through
aging infrastructure, we’re probably
throwing away 40 per cent of the water
we produce,” Coburn says.
In fact, an estimated 1.7 trillion gallons
of water are lost each year due to aging
infrastructure in the United States at a
national annual cost of US$2.6 billion. As
a result, it’s estimated that over the next
20 years, an investment of nearly US$500
billion will be required to upgrade critical
water infrastructure in North America.
After going great lengths to clean and
distribute municipal water, it seems a
waste of money and effort to lose it. Fixing
it, says Coburn, is a low-hanging fruit.
Case in Point: The Pressure Pipe Inspection
Company (PPIC), located in Mississauga,
Ontario, has developed a technology
that helps prolong the life of water
infrastructure and deal with water loss.
The company’s PipeDiver system provides
accurate condition assessment of critical
infrastructure, specifically detecting prestressing
wire breaks that could lead to
pipe ruptures. Compared to alternative
methods of condition assessment, the
solution offers a significant cost savings
as the pipeline remains in service,
eliminating the need for de-watering
and service shutdown.
“The United States continues to be
PPIC’s largest foreign market, but Mexico
is growing extremely rapidly,” says Tim
Farlow, PPIC’s controller. “We’re also
currently working in Brazil, Hong Kong,
the Phillipines and Saudi Arabia.”
Design, build, manage, operate
“Canadians know how to build and
implement with high standards. That’s
the key to our success,” says Brad
Marchant, CEO of Vancouver-based
BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc.
Case in Point: Stantec, headquartered
in Edmonton, Alberta, has extensive
experience with water supply, treatment,
and distribution systems includes modelling,
planning, testing, design, construction
management, and operations consulting.
The company has worked worldwide on
more than 25,000 water projects involving
supply, treatment, disinfection, residuals
Emerging Expertise
“One of the advantages we have in
Canada is that we’re working with a
changing environment. This puts us in a
position where we have no choice but
to have adaptable technologies and
adaptable systems,” says Frédéric Dugré,
president and CEO of H20 Innovation.
The world is changing, too. Growing
populations are placing a demand
on water and energy resources, and
Canada is responding with improved
technologies to help mitigate the risk
Australia and the United States.
Case in Point: BioteQ treats wastewater
contaminated with dissolved heavy
metals and sulphate, producing saleable
by-products and clean water that can be
discharged safely to the environment.
The company also builds and operates
commercial water treatment plants for
resource companies, utility operators,
a supplementary treatment program to
control microbiological activity, corrosion
and other factors. Applications have
shown that big office buildings are
saving about 5.5 million gallons of water
per year.
In Vancouver, Saltworks Technologies has
developed its Thermo-Ionic desalination
technology which harnesses renewable
energy sources—dryness in the atmosphere
and heat from the sun—to provide
sustainable, low cost desalinated water
with minimal environmental impact. The
company has already seen interest from
Australia and other water-poor countries.
“It doesn’t take long to calculate that
we’re going to have to reuse a lot more
of our water,” says John Coburn, XPV.
The fuel economy—especially oil and
gas—is one of Canada’s major business
sectors, and it provides great testing
grounds for applications that address the
huge amount of water and energy used
by these industries.
Calgary, Alberta’s FilterBoxx Water
and Environmental Corporation has set
its sights on developing a more efficient
and regulators, working in countries such
as Canada, the United States, Mexico,
Chile, Australia and China. In April 2008,
BioteQ commissioned one of its eight
build and operate projects: a wastewater
treatment plant at the Mt. Gordon mine
near Queensland, Australia. In exchange
for the capital, BioteQ receives 90 per
cent of the recovered metals.
Case in Point: Edmonton-based EPCOR
Utilities Inc., named one of Canada’s 10
Most Earth-Friendly Employers in 2008,
builds, owns and operates water and
wastewater treatment facilities and
infrastructure. Recently, the company
expanded into the United States with the
US$35-million acquisition of the Chapparal
City Water Company of Arizona, a public
utility company engaged principally in the
purchase, production, distribution, and
sale of water to about 13,000 customers
in the Town of Fountain Hills and a small
portion of Scottsdale, Arizona. Regulatory
approval is expected in 2011.
process for steam assisted gravity
drainage (SAGD) to remove bitumen
deposits in Alberta’s oilsands projects.
The company is developing a technology
using ceramic membranes that will allow a
high percentage of SAGD water recycling,
but while the water is still at a high
temperature. This will eliminate the need
to cool the water before treatment, saving
the energy it would require to bring it
to steam again and reducing the carbon
footprint of the traditional process.
Water recycling and reuse extends
beyond H2O recovery. Canadian
companies such as Vancouver-based
Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies
Inc. are proving that products recovered
from wastewater streams can be
profitable for the economy and the
environment. Ostara uses proprietary
technology to remove polluting nutrients
from wastewater and recycles these
into a high value, environmentallysafe
commercial fertilizer. The company
has successfully scaled-up and recently
commercially deployed its nutrient
recovery technology.
Smart technologies are
redefining how city-wide systems
operate and are managed.
at the dawn of a new
age of electrification,” says
“We’re
William Smith, VP of power
generation at Siemens Canada. Canadian
companies have always been at the
frontier of new technologies—just think
Blackberry. Now Canadian technology
vendors are creating smarter, more
efficient systems for urban spaces—and
they’re excelling at managing the potential
risks associated with this digital age.
What is the smart grid?
The smart grid is part of a design solution
for energy systems. A smart grid delivers
electricity from suppliers to consumers
using two-way digital technology to
control appliances at consumers’ homes
to save energy, reduce cost, and increase
reliability and transparency. It overlays
the electricity distribution grid with
information and net metering systems.
Smith says, “Part of what’s great about
smart grid is allowing users to connect to
their chosen form of generation. Instead
of generation following load, there will
be a transformation. Load will follow
generation.”
Niraj Bhargava, president of Ottawabased
Energate, says efficiencies are a top
CanadIans at WORk:
The Digital Age
concern for his clients. Energate’s Home
Energy Management Suite, including
industry-leading smart thermostats, is
empowering companies and consumers
to take advantage of new technology
to manage energy use, enhance
convenience, and deliver comfort in an
increasingly integrated world. (See page
26 for details about Energate’s work in
the United States).
Efficiencies can be introduced at
every point in the system. At the enduser
stage, demand can be managed
through automation, but electricity
loss can also be lessened at substations
and in the energy grid. Holger Ketterer
with ABB Inc., a leader in power and
automation technologies that enables
utility and industry customers to
improve performance while lowering
environmental impact, says that if the
company’s technologies are applied
to the energy supply chain from raw
fuel through end use, up to 30 per cent
energy savings can be achieved. Ketterer,
who heads up ABB’s transformer plant in
Varennes, Quebec, says, “It’s not always
about high-tech solutions—some of our
solutions are very basic. But they work.”
A 2010 report from market research
and consulting firm Pike Research shows
the smart grid services industry will bring
in $4.3 billion over the next five years.
The Canadian Electricity Association’s
Devin McCarthy says where Canadians
really lead the way in this new market is
at an ideas level. Burlington, Ontario and
Toronto have been some of the first cities
to roll out time-of-use pricing—that’s due
to the vision of leaders like Burlington
Hydro Electric’s president and CEO Gerry
Smallegange, who is leading the utility’s
GridSmartCity initiative (gridsmartcity.
com). “There may be opportunities to
export knowledge,” says McCarthy. For
example, Canadian utilities are moving
aggressively to adopt distributed
generation systems and demand response
programs.
Utilities
Ontario’s Energy Minister Brad Duguid
says, “We’ve been working hard to make
Ontario a leader in smart technologies.”
And they have.
Commissioner of Ontario has named
Hydro One’s smart metering program
a gold standard in designing and
implementing privacy standards across its
advanced distribution system.
Much of the technology to support
smart grid is being developed outside
of the utilities, with the exception of
Hydro Québec, which is a recognized
leader in research and development.
The utility has developed Visilec, a tool
to help consumers visualize their energy
Water wise
Smart grid includes more than electricity.
Water utilities are helping manage
energy more efficiently thanks to
Canadian innovation.
Case in Point: With offices in Toronto
and Vancouver, Sempa Power is bringing
smart grid technology—two-way
communications systems that take place
in real-time—to help the electricity
market connect to the province’s water
and wastewater treatment facilities.
The company’s technology adjusts the
manner in which water and wastewater
treatment equipment (for example,
large pumps and blowers) uses energy
on a second-by-second basis. “Based on
the water system’s capacity and inherent
flexibility, adjusting the real-time
electricity usage is achievable, without
affecting the water treatment or the
effective delivery of water to the enduser,”
says Sempa’s Ron Dizy.
Smart Tech
The new technologies are being
developed to help enable the smart
grid include electric vehicle penetration,
charging infrastructure, and meters.
In-home technology and automation
equipment is being developed in cities
like Toronto and Vancouver.
Case in Point: Vancouver-based Pulse
Energy is developing an intelligent
energy management platform called
Pulse that can provide building owners
and occupants with accurate and user
friendly building energy and resource
World Energy Congress Gets Smart
The World Energy Congress for 2010 was held
in Canada for a reason—Canadian innovators
are at the forefront of smart technologies.
The tone of the energy conference and
exhibition was unified—almost every booth
display on the trade show floor included the
word “smart.”
Quebec-based Vizimax had its marketready
renewcanada.net
ABB gave presentations at its trade show
booth, explaining how its products can
increase efficiencies, from generation
to transmission to management. ABB
recently exported three new single-phase
for a tie-in between U.S. utility American
Electric Power (AEP) and Allegheny Energy,
they will increase electric transmission
and most powerful of their kind ever built.
virtual subway systems in Beijing,
Shanghai, Hong Kong and Dubai. The
virtual versions of this unique system in
Toronto is allowing Thales to test new
features and ensure the technology is
ready for international clients—transit
agencies from Asia to America. The system
manages trains in stations and along
their routes—all remotely. Thales Rail can
install its subway-control systems in any
city, using radio-transmission technology
in subway trains to control their speed
and track the distance between trains.
Better Buildings
Smart systems for buildings are also
part of the new smart grid, creating yet
another level of efficiency.
Case in Point: Based in Brossard,
Quebec, Distech Controls develops
smart technologies that help create
efficient buildings. The company
is working on a new Air Traffic
Control Complex for the Abu Dhabi
International Airport, to be complete
in late 2010. Over 800 control points
have been set up with Distech
Controls LONWORKS controllers. All
building automation systems have
been integrated into one centralized
interface with central monitoring of
all building functions. All building and
energy management functions will be
under one central interface optimizing
system, optimizing operating efficiency.
Hydro Québec is at the
forefront in the integration
of electric vehicles into
power distribution grids.
Its research institute
(IREQ) was showcasing a
new lithium-ion battery it
developed in conjunction
with Korean battery
manufacturer VK EIG. The
battery will be used in pilot
projects in Boucherville,
Quebec, beginning in
December 2010.
