FINANCING YOUREDUCATIONAlthough <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> is a great value and one of the most affordable institutions for a qualityeducation in the <strong>Atlanta</strong> region, most applicants request financial assistance to meet the expense of acollege education.WHERE TO STARTMany grants and scholarships require applicants to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aidor FAFSA. Here are six easy steps to beginning the process:1. GO to www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).You can request a paper application by calling 1-800-433-3243. If you are hearing impaired, contact theTTY line at 1-800-730-8913.2. SELECT the school year for which you are applying for financial aid.If you plan to attend college between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012, click the 2011-2012 School Year.If you plan to attend college between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011, click the 2010-2011 School Year.3. CHOOSE “<strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong>” - our school code is 008543.4. Department of Education.· PELL recipients must be enrolled in an eligible undergraduate program of study and must not haveattained a baccalaureate degree or a first professional degree.· Normally, all associate degree and diploma programs are eligible for a Pell grant. However, manyof the technical certificate of credit (TCC) programs do not meet the qualifications eligibility for a Pellgrant. A current listing of the Pell eligible TCCs can be found at www.atlantatech.edu/PellEligibleTCCs.pdf. Award amounts vary, based on individual need as determined by federal methodology and quarterlyfederal credit hours.· Apply for the PELL grant online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.· Students with a developmental admission type do not qualify for federal financial aid (PELL, SEOG,FWS, or LEAP).Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)This federal program is designed to ‘supplement’ the grant assistance awarded to the neediest PELLgrant recipients. Funding for FSEOG is limited and based on the amount of funds allocated to the<strong>College</strong> each year. Since funds at <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> are limited, students who meet the priority deadline datefor applying for federal aid have the greatest chance of receiving FSEOG assistance. Students mayapply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students with a developmental admission type do not qualify forfederal financial aid (PELL, SEOG, FWS, or LEAP).Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally (HOPE) Scholarship ProgramThere are currently two components of the HOPE Scholarship Program available to <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> students.The HOPE grant component is available to students enrolled in a certificate or diploma programof study. Recipients are eligible for a maximum of 95-quarter hours of HOPE grant payment. Exception:Students enrolled in a program of study that requires more than 95 hours to complete may receive fundingup to a maximum of 130 hours. The maximum paid hours of eligibility for these students is based onthe number of hours required for their program of study.The HOPE scholarship component is awarded to HOPE scholars enrolled in an associate degree (AAT orAAS) program of study. HOPE scholars are students who graduate from a Georgia high school with thisdistinguished honor or students who are ‘grandfathered’ into the program after attempting a minimum of45 associate or baccalaureate degree credit hours with a 3.0 or greater cumulative GPA at the requiredcheckpoints. HOPE scholarship applicants must complete an ATC HOPE Scholarship Application. Theattempted hours limit is 190-quarter hours.Combined HOPE Grant and Scholarship Limit: In addition to the HOPE grant paid hours limit and the attemptedHOPE scholarship paid hours limit, there is a combined limit of 190-quarter hours. If the studentreaches the combined limit prior to reaching the grant or scholarship paid hours limit, said student will nolonger qualify for grant or scholarship assistance.The HOPE award amount = cost of tuition + approved fees + HOPE book allowance. The approved<strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> fees include registration fees, student activity fees, and insurance fees, for amaximum of $42.00 per quarter. The HOPE award does not cover the $35.00 technology fee or the malpracticeinsurance fees (which are required for certain health related programs of study).Contact the Office of Financial Aid for additional requirements and limitations.Georgia HERO ScholarshipThe Georgia HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship Program was createdto provide financial aid to students seeking a postsecondary education who are current members of theGeorgia National Guard or the United States Military Reserves (or their children) deployed overseas onactive service on or after February 1, 2003 to a location designated as a combat zone. It is also availablefor spouses if the guard or reservist was killed in the combat zone, died as a result of injuries received inthe combat zone, sustained 100 percent disability in the combat zone, or became 100 percent disabledas a result of injuries received in the combat zone. The maximum amount awarded to an eligible studentis $2,000 per award year, for no more than four award years.Law Enforcement Personnel Grant (LEPD)Georgia’s Law Enforcement Personnel Dependents (LEPD) Grant program provides assistance to thedependent children of law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and corrections officers/prison guardspermanently disabled or killed in the line of duty who plan to attend eligible public and private institutionsin Georgia. The maximum award is $2,000 per academic year, not to exceed a total of $8,000 for fouracademic years.Public Safety GrantThe Georgia Public Safety Memorial (GPSM) Grant provides educational assistance for the cost of attendingeligible public postsecondary institutions in Georgia to the dependent children of Georgia PublicSafety Officers permanently disabled or killed in the line of duty. NEWSWe are the third fastest growing community college in the nation!The numbers are in, and Community <strong>College</strong> Weekly has designated <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> as one of the top 10 fastest growing public community colleges in the nation. The college, which had an enrollmentincrease of 43 percent ranked third in the 2,500-4,999 enrollment category. <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> president Alvetta Peterman Thomas believes that the dramatic increase in enrollment can be attributed to anumber of factors. “First, the economic downturn has compelled a great number of people to return to college to enhance their skills or make a major career change,” said Thomas. “Second, many high schoolgraduates have found that community and technical colleges are affordable and viable options for sound career preparation.” Thomas went on to explain that many people enroll in <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> afterclose examination of the quality and scope of the course offerings. “We offer programs that prepare students to be competitive in emerging job markets. Many people are surprised to discover that <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>offers the only ADA accredited dental lab tech program in the state, or that we offer a comprehensive supply chain and logistics management program. Once they take a fresh look at what the college has to offer,they discover that <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> is the right fit for them.” <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> hopes to see a continued rise in enrollment by casting a wider net. Later this year, administrators will launch an integrated marketingcampaign targeting high school students. The college hopes that these students will take advantage of the dual enrollment programs that will allow them to take college courses and earn credit while completing theirhigh school course work.<strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> ranked as one of the nation’s bestWashington Monthly recently released its rankings of America’s Best Community <strong>College</strong>s, and <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> has beennamed one of the best in the country. According to the Washington, D.C.-based magazine, <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> is 48th among all U.S.community colleges and the top technical college in Georgia. The rankings were based on two sources: the Community <strong>College</strong> Surveyof Student Engagement and graduation rate statistics, compiled by the US Department of Education. Unlike the typical guidebooks thatrank four-year colleges, these findings were entirely based on measures with research-proven links to student success.<strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong>makes the final four<strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> may not be in the NCAA Final Four this upcoming season, but thecollege was selected as one of four finalists for the First Annual Sonny Perdue Award. Theaward was created by the State Board of the <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> System of Georgia to recognizeexcellence in technical education. PROGRAM PROFILEThe Health IT Continuing Education Program51,000 Healthcare/IT professionals will be needed nationwide toassist healthcare providers in complying with the federal mandate forelectronic health records. <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>nical <strong>College</strong> is now the onlycollege in GA selected to train healthcare professionals in IT competenciesand IT professionals in healthcare competencies through theRegion D Consortium.DeliveryInitially, the continuing education HIT program will offered 100 percent onlineDurationThe program typically takes six months to completeCostThe cost of the course is $178.
