Concert Preview: The Nine Lessons and Carols
The Nine Lessons and Carols is fast approaching! A centuries-old ritual performed
annually at King’s College in Cambridge, England, The Nine Lessons and Carols is a
beloved retelling of the Christmas legend in words and music. Drawing from both the
Old and New Testaments, the Nine Lessons guide the listener through the best-loved
verses of Christmas. Enjoy the angelic voices of the choristers as they perform excerpts
from Ceremony of Carols alongside selections such as Bob Chilcott’s This Joy and David
Brunner’s On Christmas Morn.
Accompanied by Nathan Sumrall, Michael Copps and organist Glenn Kime, the choirs
will present perennial favorites such as Fum! Fum! Fum! and Fear Not, Good Shepherds.
The audience is invited to join in the singing of familiar carols, including Hark! The Herald
Angels Sing and O Come, All Ye Faithful during the performance. The Nine Lessons and
Carols will conclude with choristers surrounding the audience for a candlelit a cappella
performance of Stille Nacht (Silent Night). Please join us for this holiday celebration!
We invite you to turn to page 7 to learn more about how to honor a loved one in our
December concert program.
Fall Giving Campaign
As we celebrate our 30 th Anniversary we would like to express our deepest appreciation to those who have helped us
along our journey and those who continue to support the Syracuse Children’s Chorus as we move towards an exciting
future. Past support of the Chorus has enabled us to do remarkable things and create life changing memories not only
for our choristers, but also for their families, our audiences and the community at large. We would like to take a
moment to share some highlights from the past 30 years:
• Over 1,700 young singers have participated in the Chorus
• We have travelled to China, Europe, Canada, throughout the United States and most recently to
Orlando, Florida in May 2010
• The Chorus has performed for national and international organizations, including the International Society for
Music Education, the Music Educators National Conference, the American Choral Directors Association, and
the American Guild of Organists
• We have commissioned and premiered over 85 works by some of this generation’s most notable composers
from around the world, bringing new music to life for current and future generations
• Throughout the development of the American children’s choir movement, we have served as a model for music
education, musical excellence, and arts management
We have seen our choristers grow and mature into adulthood, leading purposeful lives and giving back to the
community in significant ways. Now, more than ever, it is critical that you support the future leaders of tomorrow.
Here are just a few examples of what your contribution provides:
• Scholarships: Providing tuition assistance to financially deserving choristers
• Venue Rental: Allowing choristers to perform in beautiful spaces throughout the community
• Performance Opportunities: Enabling choristers to work with guest artists and composers from
around the world
• Education: The Chorus provides exceptional age-appropriate vocal training and music education
• Tours: Providing choristers with once in a lifetime opportunities to share their musical gifts and experience
diverse cultures and communities throughout the world
We look forward to receiving your donation in celebration of our 30 th Anniversary and in support of the past, present,
and future young singers of the Syracuse Children’s Chorus.
Vanderkamp
Chorale met for two days in August at Vanderkamp Center in Cleveland, NY to
prepare for another busy season. Activities included music rehearals, tie-dying, a
scavenger hunt, musical chairs, a tacky-tourist relay game, s’mores over the campfire
and postcards from camp. Members of Kantorei joined Chorale on the first night for
an island luau and rehearsal in preparation for the November performances with the
Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Special thanks to our parent chaperones and alumni
choristers for all of their help!
In Our Community
Choristers perform throughout the community
Choristers have been very busy with performances throughout our
community this semester! On September 30, members of Chorale
performed for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Mid-
Atlantic Region Conference at the Doubletree Hotel in DeWitt. The
evening had a Wizard of Oz theme (members were dressed as Oz
characters) and choristers learned Somewhere Over the Rainbow
especially for this performance. At left, choristers Emily T., Destin
F., Riley W., and Addie B. take a moment to pose for the camera
while waiting backstage.
Chorale choristers had the unique opportunity to sing at the
Rosamond Gifford Zoo as part of their annual Zoo Boo on October
30. Performing for a large audience of children, parents, and animals,
choristers previewed selections that would later be performed with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Weber also
taught the group The Wobblin’ Goblin, a samba-style song about a goblin with a faulty broom.
Select members of Kantorei joined Chorale for two performances with the
Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in early November. Choristers began
preparing six pieces from Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs at
Vanderkamp this August. All of their hard work paid off, as Linda Loomis
from the Post Standard applauded their performance on Friday, November 5,
saying that “their vocalization, enunciation, and interpretation were perfect”.
At right, chorister Maura C. poses with her mom, Katryn Hansen, a member
of the Syracuse University Oratorio Society who performed later on the
program.
Chorale was invited to represent Syracuse, NY as part of Lord & Taylor’s
Share the Joy event on November 15th. The event featured choral groups at
each of the retailer’s 46 stores nationwide performing a concert of holiday
music that was later streamed on LordAndTaylor.com/Share and at the
holiday window display unveiling at the 5th Avenue flagship location in
New York City.
Meet our Interns
Each semester, the Syracuse Children’s Chorus is pleased to have conducting interns from the Setnor School of Music at
Syracuse University. Coming from a variety of majors within the School of Music, interns study conducting technique,
rehearsal preparation, and repertoire selection in addition to conducting their choirs during rehearsals. We took a few
minutes to interview each intern and find out a little more about them.
Name: Abby Ottenjohn
Choir: Chorale
Year: Senior
Major: Music Industry
Semesters as a conducting intern: First semester
Why I wanted to conduct SCC and my favorite thing about
conducting the Chorus so far: I wanted to be a conducting intern
because I wanted more hands on experience within the non-profit
industry of the music world. I also wanted to be able to have the
chance to teach a children's choir. The best thing for me about being an
SCC intern is that I have the ability to interact with students who are
so talented and willing to learn, it is truly such a wonderful experience
when you have students who are willing to put in the energy that is
needed to be a great chorus.
Name: Gyasi Barber
Choir: Preludio
Year: Senior
Major: Music Education
Semesters as a conducting intern: Second semester
Why I wanted to conduct SCC: I wanted to be a conducting intern to surround myself with talent, while still being able
to mold the talent around me.
Name: Jackie Moe
Choir: Preludio
Year: Senior
Major: Music Education
Semesters as a conducting intern: Second semester
Why I wanted to conduct SCC and/or my favorite thing about conducting SCC: I wanted to be a conducting intern for
the experience working with a very young choir as opposed to more mature voices. This age is a great place to hook
them onto music! The best part about being a conducting intern is hanging out with the kids before rehearsal as they are
arriving. I love hearing all their crazy stories from school and laughing with them before rehearsal starts.
Name: Johna Kesten
Choir: Kantorei
Year: Junior
Major: Music Education
Semesters as a conducting intern: First semester
Why I wanted to conduct SCC: I wanted to be a conducting intern for SCC because I hope to conduct an elementary or
middle school choir in the future, and I have heard from previous interns that the SCC conductors and ensembles are
great models to observe and take after.
Name: Evan Wichman
Choir: Chorale
Year: Junior
Major: Music Education
Semesters as a conducting intern: First Semester
Why I wanted to conduct SCC: I thought SCC would be a great opportunity to do something new. SCC is a wonderful
experience because of the high level of musicianship of both the choristers and artistic staff.
SCC thanks all of the chorister families, friends, and loyal community supporters that helped
make our 2010 Poinsettia Sale a success! We greatly appreciate your continued support!
