This significant goal fosters a highly collaborativeatmosphere in which faculty often work on a multi-disciplinary level to advance both education and research.Neil GrunbergNeil Grunberg, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Medical and ClinicalPsychology. His specialty areas include tobacco and nicotine use, drug abuse andstress. He has published more than 140 scientific papers on these topics, with anemphasis on the effects of nicotine on body weight, food consumption, attention andstress. In addition to his research and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Grunberg mentorsgraduate students in medical and clinical psychology, as well as neuroscience.Dr. Grunberg has received multiple awards for his researchand teaching, including the prestigious Society of BehavioralMedicine Distinguished Scientist award. Most recently, hereceived the 2006 Building Partnerships for Better Health Awardfrom the USU Center for Health Disparities and the 2007 CarolJ. Johns Medal for outstanding contributions to the faculty andeducational programs at USU. Dr. Grunberg also received theU.S. Surgeon General’s Medal for his work as scientific editorfor the well-known Surgeon General’s report that showed thatnicotine is addictive, and the Surgeon General’s report on thehealth benefits of smoking cessation.Preparing Students for SuccessDeborah Bowen, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Socialand Behavioral Sciences at Boston University, is a 1986graduate of USU and former student of Dr. Grunberg. Shehas been recognized for her work in cancer and healthbehavior change, and served as principal investigator onseveral NIH-funded grants on health behavior topics includingbreast cancer risk communications and dietary change.Among her many professional honors, Dr. Bowen has beennamed Outstanding Health Psychologist by the AmericanPsychological Association.“My experiences at USU prepared me both intellectuallyand practically for an academic career in public health.Intellectually, I had the privilege of receiving training thatwas both challenging and rigorous. Practically, having theopportunity to apply health and medical psychology tothe settings of military medicine and health promotionled me to see how my field could be relevant in manycontexts, including urban and international settings.”USU fosters ahighly collaborativeatmosphere in whichfaculty often work ona multi-disciplinarylevel to advanceboth research andeducation.14
