The parents ofAngelica Wade, who bore a son by John Utley, Jr. out of wedlock, have not beendetermined. Ann Lewis, who married John Utley, Jr., was a daughter of John Lewis ofGoochland County. iThe parentage of John Utley Wade was established in Goochland County Court inFebruary 1739: iiAngelica Wade Comes into Court and makes Oath that John Utley, junr is theFather of a Male Child named John Born of her body whereupon it is Orderedthat a Capias do issue agst the said John Utley returnable to the next CourtOn the Complaint of Angelica Wade agt. John Utley Junr. for getting a BastardChild on her Body the said Angelica having made Oath to the same it is Orderedthat the said John do give Security to save the Parish of St. James harmlessfrom the maintainence of said Child and that he pay CostsOn 15 June 1731 John Utley sold the land upon which he lived to Anthony Hoggatt for100 pounds. The 800 acres were on the north side of James River, partly in GoochlandCounty and partly in Hanover County. The deed was witnessed by Thomas Cookson,John Utley and Robert Willis. There was no wife’s signature or release of dower. iii Thegrantor undoubtedly was John Utley, Sr. and the witness his son, John Utley, Jr., whohad to have been 21 to serve as a witness and, so, born before 1710. This issubstantiated by the appearance in court in 1735 of John Utley, who was identified as“Jr,” to have the age of his negro boy Sampson judged. This record clearly states thatJohn Utley, Jr. owned Sampson and in Sampson is again mentioned in the 1762 will ofJohn Utley, Jr. ivThe land which was sold to Anthony Hoggatt was originally on the Hanover-Henricocounty line, and the Henrico portion fell into Goochland when Goochland was erected:Prepared by WILLIAM G SCROGGINS 22 Oct 1999: 718 Mill Valley Drive, Taylor Mill KY 41015-2278 2

JOHN UTLEY JRon 12 October 1750. On 15 September 1753 he began keeping a record, which hestated was the first record kept for the parish, of marriages that he performed. Heobtained a ledger in 1756 that became a permanent register for the parish and wasmaintained by him until his death in 1798. In 1756 he inserted many of the priormarriages that he had conducted and, at the request of some of the parents of thecongregation, he also added some birth records going back to 1705. The church for St.James Parish was Dover Church which was the first church in Goochland County. Itwas authorized to be constructed on 11 February 1720 at a cost of 54,990 pounds oftobacco. It was to be 50 feet long and 24 feet wide. xiDover Church is on Route 621 about three-quarters of a mile north of the village ofManakin at the intersection of 621 and Route 6 from Richmond to the town ofGoochland. Manakin is about thirteen miles from Richmond and twelve miles fromGoochland. There is a St. James Church on Route 649 about one-half mile south ofRoute 6 and two miles east of Manakin. xiiThe Reverend Douglas made no record of any deaths in the Utley family. The possibledeath dates of William, Lillie, Obediah and Josiah Utley were taken from an index ofprobate records of Goochland County:William Utley 1810 Book 19, page 691Lilly Utley 1821 Book 24, page 434Obediah Utley 1824 Book 25, page 513Josiah Utley 1826 Book 27, page 73John Utley III, who married Nancy Clarkson, was born “about 1746,” served in theRevolutionary War and died on 12 November 1824. xiii Josiah Utley, son of John Utley IIIand Nancy Clarkson, was born in Goochland County, Virginia, on 26 February 1774,married Nancy Barker and died on 07 January 1853 in Mercer County, Kentucky.William Thomas Utley, son of James Utley and Elizabeth Hardwick, was born on 20March 1838 in Mercer County, Kentucky, married Hannah Graham, who was born in1845 in Indiana, died on 18 January 1921 and is buried at Sandusky, Lee County,Iowa. xivHezekiah (Ezekial) Utley and Private William Utley of Goochland County alsoparticipated in the Revolutionary War. xvIt appears that four of the sons of John Utley, Jr. were taxed in Goochland County in1782: xvi Hezekiah Utley 1 poll tax; 2 slavesJosiah UtleyObediah UtleyWilliam Utley1 poll tax; 2 slaves1 poll tax; 1 slave1 poll tax; 1 slave:Prepared by WILLIAM G SCROGGINS 22 Oct 1999: 718 Mill Valley Drive, Taylor Mill KY 41015-2278 8
