Giammona Pool is loc<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> 131 <strong>Westmoor</strong>Avenue (<strong>at</strong> the south end <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Westmoor</strong> <strong>High</strong> campus, <strong>of</strong>f Edgemont Drive).The old Giammona Pool was in an irreparable st<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> decay and closedearlier this year. <strong>Westmoor</strong>’s new indoor <strong>pool</strong> is 25-meters long and 10 lanesacross, making it significantly larger than the one it replaced. The aqu<strong>at</strong>icscomplex also has a smaller therapeutic shallow <strong>pool</strong>.Jefferson Union <strong>High</strong> School oversaw the design and construction <strong>of</strong> the newswimming <strong>pool</strong> facility, under the scrutiny <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> St<strong>at</strong>e Architects.The masonry structure covering the <strong>pool</strong> has reinforced concrete beams tosupport the ro<strong>of</strong> deck, making it much more durable and we<strong>at</strong>her resistantthan the former Giammona Pool building.mile. A voter approved bond (Measure B in 2006) helped fund theconstruction, along with a $4 million contribution from the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong>.The collabor<strong>at</strong>ion between the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> and the Jefferson Union <strong>High</strong>School District ultim<strong>at</strong>ely resulted in a facility th<strong>at</strong> neither agency could havebuilt independently.<strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s Parks and Recre<strong>at</strong>ion Department will <strong>of</strong>fer year-round recre<strong>at</strong>ionaland lap swimming, along with swimming lessons and <strong>pool</strong> parties <strong>at</strong> the newfacility. Roosevelt was still a peacetime presidentwhile war was waging in Europe. The pre-World War II bliss<strong>of</strong> <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> included trips to the the<strong>at</strong>er to see the best films<strong>of</strong> 1939: Gone with the Wind, The Wizard <strong>of</strong> Oz, Snow White, OfMice and Men, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Make a Difference Day ...<strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> ... a city th<strong>at</strong> cares.... <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s largest volunteer event will be October 23DALY CITY will celebr<strong>at</strong>e its twelfth consecutiveMake a Difference Day on S<strong>at</strong>urday, October 23beginning <strong>at</strong> 9:00 a.m. Touted as the “N<strong>at</strong>ionalDay <strong>of</strong> Doing Good,” Make a Difference Day is anopportunity for residents to engage in volunteerprojects in their neighborhoods and throughoutthe <strong>City</strong>. This is the single largest volunteer eventin <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> and throughout the United St<strong>at</strong>es.Last year millions <strong>of</strong> people across the countryvolunteered for Make a Difference Day events intheir communities, including more than one hundred in <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong>.<strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> in 1939 ... from page 1actually specialized in Italian and French cuisine), or the GlobeTavern (technically, then beyond the <strong>City</strong> Limits). TheDonahue and Laufenberg dealership <strong>of</strong>fered the ’39 DeSoto, fe<strong>at</strong>uring “handi-shift and wide-range safety headlights.”Other dealerships sold Fords, Studebakers, Buicks, Chevrolets,Dodges, Chryslers, and Plymouths.Recre<strong>at</strong>ion was popular with <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> residents in 1939. The<strong>City</strong>’s Recre<strong>at</strong>ion Department was formed in 1937 as part <strong>of</strong>the Works Progress Administr<strong>at</strong>ion to promote the “growth <strong>of</strong>civic playgrounds, organized recre<strong>at</strong>ional and social diversionsand supervised juvenile leisure time activities.” A successfrom its earliest days, the Department enrolled more than2,000 residents in its first full year <strong>of</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion. Horseshoeswas among residents’ favorite pastimes. The Recre<strong>at</strong>ionDepartment maintained four lighted courts between Los Banosand Los Olivos avenues. The <strong>City</strong>’s passion for horseshoes wasdemonstr<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> hosting wh<strong>at</strong> was then the onlyhorseshoe mar<strong>at</strong>hon ever held in the United St<strong>at</strong>es.The 1939 <strong>Daly</strong> <strong>City</strong> Commercial and Civic Directory is available<strong>at</strong> the Serramonte Library Reference Desk, 40 WembleyDrive.
